Barack Obama says sealing the border won’t work

July 1, 2010

Today Barack Obama gave a speech on comprehensive immigration reform and reaffirmed his belief that– much  like George W Bush– amnesty for illegals must be included in the reform. He went on to tell those of us who believe that the border should be secured before we even begin to talk about immigration reform that sealing the border “won’t work.”

Even as we are committed to doing what’s necessary to secure our borders, even without passage of the new law, there are those who argue that we should not move forward with any other elements of reform until we have fully sealed our borders,” said Obama. “But our borders are just too vast for us to be able to solve the problem only with fences and border patrols. It won’t work. Our borders will not be secure as long as our limited resources are devoted to not only stopping gangs and potential terrorists, but also the hundreds of thousands who attempt to cross each year simply to find work.

I have read that last sentence several times now, and unless I am interpreting it wrong, Barack Obama is stating that we cannot secure our borders because it is too expensive to protect our borders from gangs, terrorists, and those that are seeking work. The implication here is that while we should stop the gangs and the terrorists we should not be stopping people from entering this country illegally if they are just coming here to find work. In other words, the United States has limited resources and cannot afford to crack down on everybody that is sneaking across the borders.

I would like to take a little time out from the subject here to note my amusement that Barack Obama has found an issue on which he actually admits the United States has limited resources, because you would not think that is the case when you look at all if the wasteful spending this regime has been engaged in from the very beginning.

  Anyway:

This assertion by Barack Obama that we do not have the money to commit to stopping everyone from crossing the border has me concerned that there are no plans to stop future illegal immigration across the border by people who are looking for work. It doesn’t sound to me as if Barack Obama plans on granting amnesty to illegals already here in return for stopping future illegals from crossing the border. It sounds to me like Barack Obama is willing to let anyone who claims they are looking for work to cross the border even after comprehensive immigration reform is passed.

I would argue that while people who are illegally crossing the border to look for work pose a threat that is not as serious as gangs or terrorists, it is a serious threat nonetheless. We have millions of Americans who are unemployed and have been for months. Infusing these illegal aliens who are looking for work with American citizens who are looking for work will only make it harder for out of work Americans to find jobs. While the illegals who are coming here for the sole purpose of finding work may be benign themselves, the effect they will have on the American economy is not.

The last think that the United States needs during this economic turmoil is more people coming to this country illegally, looking for jobs and taking the few jobs that are out there away from the American citizens who are also looking for work.

Barack Obama claims that we do not have the resources to crack down on illegals who are coming to this country to find work, but I disagree because America can not afford to let people who come here illegally take jobs away from honest, hardworking Americans who will find it increasingly harder to find work if these illegals are continually allowed to come to this country and steal jobs away from hungry Americans.

Barack Obama doesn’t think we can afford to stop illegals looking for work from entering the country; I do not think that we can afford to continue to let these illegals enter the country.

It’s because he wants their vote. All the politicians do. That’s why they won’t fix the problem

The sad part is, the people who are really suffering from this are the illegals who get exploited, used, and abused. It’s the equivalent to Modern day slavery.

I don’t believe He ever intended to seal the border.

I really believe the end game is the NAU – North American Union. Obama and his ilk, don’t see America as a sovereign country but as part of Canada and Mexico, therefore, there cannot be a border because we would be dividing ourselves.

Why, oh why, did we put this man in power. Sigh…

If by “his like” you mean every Administration since Bush Sr., then “yes”. I agree.

You are right Dominique, he has no intention of ever sealing the border. Never had and never will.

Name one “wall” that has ever “worked”:

    Great Wall of China. (Fail.)
    Berlin Wall. (Fail.)
    Israeli West Bank (Failing.)

Honestly, I cannot think of one. Can you?

Isn’t the definition of “insanity” something along the lines of doing something over and over again but expecting different results?

PS. From the makers of 9/11, we already know that true “terrorists” carry legitimate visas/passports. (So much for walls preventing “terrorists” from entering America’s boarders.)

      Sheasie,

I do not buy your analogy of the Great Wall of China or the Berlin Wall, etc. This is not about separating two groups of people, but rather about preventing those who would enter our country illegally from doing so. I have asked many times, but will do so again. What is so wrong with that?

Before we do anything else concerning immigration, we must secure the border, as much as possible. Then we can proceed by enforcing our current immigration laws and possibly make some adjustments to those. Trying to “fix” the illegal immigration problem in any other order is insanity, indeed.

Larry is right, this iis all we want. Seal the border first, fix the immigration problem second.

It’s all political—the dems want future voters and many Republicans want cheap labor. Both are guilty, but the policies of the Democrats are the most dangerous to the State! Obama is an astute Chicago politicans who cannot and will not change his ways. As far as the cost of securing the border you and I know that it would be far cheaper to secure it than the economic cost of the tens of thousands crossing each and every month. We can no longer afford to support these illegals. Good thoughtful post.

Thanks for the compliment Ron. Besided wanting cheap labor, Republicans also want to show Latinos that they care about them also, they want to try to win some of their votes. They are afraid to be perceived as racists if they try to close the border.

The whole idea that it would be too expensive to stop those “just seeking work” along with the criminals and terrorists is a load of total garbage.

Common sense tells you that it’s easier to stop everybody than to pick and choose who we stop. Common sense tells you that if the poor little hard worker can sneak across, so can the well-financed drug criminal or terrorist.

Oh, and icing for the cake, more hypocrisy: Obama and the Dems have bottomless wallets for unemployment checks or nationalized healthcare, but suddenly they are out of money for securing our border.

Ugh, I’ve had too much hypocrite “icing” lately. Makes me sick to my stomach.

So true, they can spend wildly when they want to even though there is no money, but they can’t come up with the money to protect our borders?

There are several examples of borders where illegal immigration is zero, or next to zero.

    North Korea / South Korea
    North Vietnam / South Vietnam
    Iraq / Iran

What do they have in common? An active military presence, and the authorization for that military to defend their border.

The border is not defended, because the leadership chooses not to defend it, rather the leadership chooses to spend billions on healthcare, deals to the unions, ACORN……….
