Students told they couldn’t sing the national anthem at the Lincoln Memorial

August 13, 2010

I am not sure how this story did not make any headlines when it first happened two months ago, but it is now being reported that a group of students who decided to sing the national anthem in front of the Lincoln Memorial could not do so because is constituted an illegal demonstration.

The students, members of the conservative Young America’s Foundation, were told by U.S. Park Police that they were “were in violation of federal law and their impromptu performance constituted a demonstration in an area that must remain ‘completely content neutral'”

The police defended their usurpation of the freedom of speech:

The area they were standing in and singing is an area that is restricted for this type of activity,” said Sgt. David Schlosser. “The United States Park Police is absolutely content-neutral when it comes to any sort of demonstrations in these areas

Content neutral? This certainly seems content neutral to me. These students were not protesting anything with this display of patriotism. There was no demonstration here nor was a political statement being made–unless you believe that showing national pride is a political statement. This was nothing more than a spontaneous reaction motivated by the sight of a memorial to a man whom many consider to be the greatest president in United States history.

Perhaps their crime here was being proud of their country–we do know that Michelle Obama was never proud of her country until her celebrated husband ran for president. Perhaps their crime here was showing a preference for the United States over other countries–we do know that the current regime feels as if Barack Obama is president of the world, not just America. Or, perhaps there is a crime here because by showing that you love America, you may offend people of other countries who have moved to this country–either legally or illegally– and the last thing that this regime wants people to do is take sides–after all, Barack Obama stopped wearing his flag pin after 9/11 so that the terrorists wouldn’t think he was choosing sides.

There is something very wrong in this country when there are actually zones where the national anthem is outlawed. Before you know it this regime will institute a more “relevent” national anthem for our times–it seems to me there was a regime sometime in the 1930’s which did much the same in a country across the ocean once they gained power.

I just have one question; if this was a group of illegal aliens who marched on the same grounds, waving the Mexican flag, demanding to be freed from their perceived shackles of slavery because they are forced to live in fear in the shadows as illegal aliens, while singing the Mexican national anthem, would they also have been silenced? Or would they simply have been exercising a constitutional right that they someday hope to have?

I can’t grasp in my little mind, why the Park Police would even consider telling these students they could not sing the National Anthem. I would think the Lincoln Memorial would be an appropriate place to do that. Political correctness gone amok, it sound like to me.

Could it be that they were just looking for money, as in getting called to do a detail or something like that? or they didn’t get a permit? There is a pretty big rally planned for 8/28/10 at the same spot. I haven’t heard about any problems with that, but we’ll see…..

I have heard that the Lincoln Memorial is considered a more solemn site, and no one is supposed to do much of anything loud there. If anyone has confirmation one way or another, please correct me.

On the nose, Steve! Pride in our country seems to be anathema to most of the Blame America crowd and those who believe in a strong multiculturalism. The way some liberals spit out the word “patriotism” these days, their definition seems to be an irrational, nationalistic jingoism.

Let’s not forget that Joe Biden once said it was patriotic for Americans to pay higher taxes. (He must have forgotten why the revolution was faught)
