Harry Reid is opposed to the Ground Zero mosque

August 16, 2010

In a way we should all be thankful that Barack Obama waded into the Ground Zero mosque controversy when he defended the notion that a mosque should be built on Ground Zero–a premise that he is now trying unsuccessfully to back away from–because he has turned this issue into a major campaign issue right before the November midterm elections.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle are now going to be asked if they support the idea that a mosque should be built on Ground Zero. At issue here is not the constitutionality of building this mosque–we all know that the constitution guarantees Muslims the right to the same freedom of religion that we all enjoy, we didn’t need Barack Obama to tell us this–but whether or not they SHOULD build the mosque here.

Barack Obama is now claiming that he was only saying that Muslims have the constitutional right to build this mosque, but he is unwilling to state whether or not the SHOULD build this mosque. He is too afraid to offer an opinion about this so we are only left to guess that once again Barack Obama differs with the majority of Americans, only this time he is unwilling to make his feelings public.

In a time when the Democrats face the possibility of heavy loses in the Congress the last thing they needed was to be asked to weigh in on this controversial issue, but thanks to Barack Obama they are going to have to take a stand on the Ground Zero mosque–unlike Barack Obama, they will not be afforded the luxury of not taking a stand.

Today Harry Reid–who is facing a tough re-election bid–was asked about his position on the Ground Zero mosque.

Here is some of what Harry Reid had to say through a spokesman:

The First Amendment (of the U.S. Constitution) protects freedom of religion. Senator Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built someplace else

I have to give Harry Reid some kudos here–even if he only said what he said because he is in a tough re-election bid–because he has finally said something with which I agree. Harry Reid has chosen a side on this issue and unlike Barack Obama, he stands on the side of the American people. I never thought I would ever write those words, but there they are.

Harry Reid did what our supposed leader was afraid to do by emphatically stating his opposition to the Ground Zero mosque. If he gets re-elected he can return to his normal positions of screwing over the American people, but for now at least, he is with us.

It is going to be interesting to see how this issue plays out; it is going to be interesting to see which Democrats are going to stand by Barack Obama and which Democrats are going to take the courageous stand that Barack Obama was unwilling to take.

Barack Obama was afforded the perfect opportunity during his Ramadan speech to “reach out” to the Muslim world and ask them to reconsider building a mosque on Ground Zero–he would have gained the respect of many on the right by taking such a stand–but instead he decided to placate the Muslims at the expense of the feelings of most Americans, especially those that lost loved ones on the fateful day of that attack. And because of this he has turned this issue into a national political controversy heading into the midterm elections.

I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again – this President is ill-served by a staff that lets him utter non-endorsing endorsements and then equivocatory “clarifications.”

There’d have been nothing wrong with him saying essentially what Senator Reid said, or something along the lines of “Despite their right to build the mosque, I hope our Muslim friends can understand the depth of feeling this proposal has stirred in the American people and will consider their plans in light of that feeling.”

IMO, frankly, the best time for a mosque to be built there is on the 25th or 50th anniversary – after enough time has passed to let broken hearts heal and for the Muslim community in the US make clear by deed that its intention in building the mosque isn’t to make Americans regret our freedom of religion, nor to erect a victory monument.

I agree with you 100% on this issue, although I question whether the time would ever be right to build a mosque on this site. It has been almost 70 years since Pearl Harbor, what do you think would happen if the Japanese wanted to build some sort of shrine to their WWII heroes there? I am honestly not sure what the reacion would be by most Americans–I know what my reaction would be!

You make a very good point about the President’s staff, Georgia Yankee. I couldn’t believe he said what he did in the first place and the follow up statements just made things worse. It honestly troubles me that he couldn’t seem to show his support for building the mosque elsewhere.

Is he being ill seved by his staff, or is he ignoring their advice?

Kind of ironic, but at least he actually took a position on the issue. Honestly, I do not understand why this is even an issue. It should be an open and shut case of “build the mosque somewhere else”, but the liberals just can’t seem to let it go. Do they just want to rub it in the faces of those who died on 9/11?

Believe me, it was hard for me to give Harry Reid any credit whatsoever. 🙂 You are right, this seems like it should be a no-brainer, but the liberals have painted themselves into such a corner with their politically correct BS that they can’t simply say what is right in fear of offending a group they are trying to appease.

Don’t pay a bit of attention to Reid.
Harry Reid is desparate – he knows he’s not going to be re-elected and thank God for that.

Harry Reid isn’t running OR hiding, Reid is PANDERING… He wants votes, and he’ll do or say anything it takes to get them…

A lot like that old RINO bastard McCain, he gets very conservative come election time, afterwards, he goes back to being a RINO supporting the Dems…

Yeah, I agree about Reid. He would not have said what he did if it was not an election year.
I also agree with you about McCain, it is amazing that he is suddenly against the same immigratin policies that he was authoring just a few hears ago.
