Republicans vow to defund healthcare reform if they gain control of the House
It is no secret that a vast majority of Americans are opposed to the healthcare legislation; all polls show that most Americans would support repealing this legislation. Many candidates are running on–among other things–repealing the healthcare reform legislation.
The odds of actually appealing the healthcare legislation are very long at best; there is virtually no chance of repealing this bill as it would take a veto proof majority in the Senate to override Barack Obama’s veto of the repeal. While Republicans are poised to gain seats in the House and in the Senate it is highly unlikely that they will win enough Senate seats to override Barack Obama’s veto.
Another option that we could hope for if Republicans gain control would be for the Congress to begin to pick apart the bill one item at a time and repeal it in small portions, but again, it seems highly unlikely that Republicans will have enough votes even to begin the neutering of the bill–and besides, this option would take much too long.
But there is still one option available to Republicans to stop the implementation of the healthcare reform legislation if they are able to make the gains in the Congress that are predicted.
Defunding.
As part of the “Great Compromise” at the Constitutional Convention the House of Representatives was given the authority to originate all spending bills as well as having their number of representatives based on population, while the Senate would give every state equal representation, voted for by state legislature (later overturned by the 17th amendment in 1913.)
It is here that our best prospect of stopping Obamacare lies.
John Boehner has called for the defunding of Obamacare if Republicans take control of the Congress and even RINO John McCain (we’ll see if he is serious after he wins re-election) has joined in. And now Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. Tom Price has also promised that if Republicans gain control there will be an effort to defund this disastrous and unpopular bill.
One has to think that all Republicans who are running under the promise to repeal Obamacare would also be more than willing to settle for defunding this debacle. That is why the election in November os so critical.
It seems all but certain that Republicans are going to gain control over the House, and if they do they will control all of the revenue bills. If they have a majority that is willing to suspend the funding of Obamacare, there is nothing that anyone can do to stop them. Obamacare will be dead on arrival.
This is the same strategy that anti-war Democrats could have used to defund the War on Terror if they were truly serious about ending the war, but they were either not serious about ending the war or they didn’t have the guts to do it.
Republicans are talking a good game in regards to defunding Obamacare, the question is, will they have the guts to do it? I think they will becuase they understand how upset Americans are with the shady way this deal was passed, but there is only one way to find out, we must send them to the Congress and then we will be able to judge them on their actions.

I am in total agreement with you Steve. If the House holds the pursestrings, then it’s time to PULL THEM SHUT!

It will be interesting in Washington after the elections. You can bet for sure, if the Republicans do follow through with their campaign promises and defund the health care reforms that were passed. If they do not, they need to understand that we are going to be watching them.
Concerning the prospects of defunding the reforms, how will that work? Are we sure the funds will not be included in the annual spending bills that are a must-pass for Congress? Just wondering about that, so I thought I would ask.

Yes we will be watching. They republicans need to know that if they get in power they had better do what we sent them there to do or else we will send them packing as well.
According to what I read it would be a separate appropriations bill but you can never tell what the Congress is planning until it moves forward. As you said, we will be watching!

Thanks, Steve. I didn’t know how that was going to work. It sounds like the funds for each portion of the reforms are going to be appropriated separately.

And that is certainly good news, it makes defunding this thing a very plausable possibilty.

Defunding is the way to go until 2013- I love it
The courts should pick it apart as well… and imo the voters are putting the fear-of-God into Republicans, they are more likely than ever before to be called on it next election then

I must say I’m very wary of the defunding option not specific to healthcare but to the absolute power it gives the party in control of the House. With broad support the House can choose to defund anything it doesn’t like — the Depts of Education, Energy, State, Defense, whatever… I’m not clear how the line gets drawn and whether there is an effective override but this strikes me as a dangerous option.

I understand your concern, but this power was put into the hands of the branch of government closest to the people for a reason–so that they could decide what was worthy of funding and what wasn’t. I don’t know if there is a line of distinction or not, but I would say there isn’t.
This could be a dangerous option, but I would hope that congresspeople would only use it in response to issues as unpopular with the American people as this issue is. I used the War on Terror as an example of a situation where this option could be used but wasn’t. I like to think that people would realize there are certain times where this option isn’t really an option after all.

Can we get that in writing?

Their word is their bond. We will be watching them to see if they actually do what they say they are going to do, if not we will get rid of them also.
