Harry Reid promises to push the DREAM Act through the lame duck Congress

November 17, 2010

Earlier today Harry Reid reiterated a promise that he made before the midterm election–he is promising to hold a vote on the DREAM Act during the lame duck session of Congress.

Unable to get a comprehensive immigration reform law through the Congress during Barack Obama’s first two years as president, the Democrats tried to pass the DREAM Act by attaching it to a defense funding bill–the plan being to pass comprehensive immigration reform one piece at a time–but the measure still failed. Now, with losing Democrats preparing to head home for good and with nothing left to lose Harry Reid thinks that there is an opportunity to pass one of the most controversial parts of comprehensive immigration reform in the lame duck session.

The DREAM Act is an acronym for the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act. This sounds like such a benevolent name, who could possibly be opposed to it? But there is one word missing from this bill’s description and that word is ILLEGAL. Here is what I have written about the DREAM Act in the past: In short, the DREAM Act allows a person who was under 16 when they came to America illegally, graduated high school (at taxpayer expense) and completed at least 2 years of college (and who would eligible for in-state tuition rates even though they are here illegally) a path towards citizenship. An even shorter way to sum up this legislation would be this: it is amnesty for a certain group of illegal aliens.

The DREAM Act will allow aliens who meet a certain criteria (being legal not among those criteria) amnesty as well as in state tuition to a college in the state in which they illegally reside. The DREAM Act is nothing more than the beginning of granting amnesty to the millions of people who are in this country illegally. Barack Obama himself has called the DREAM Act a “down-payment” on comprehensive immigration reform, and if this one group of illegal aliens is granted amnesty we can rest assured that as the comprehensive immigration policy is passed one measure at a time that all of the other illegal aliens will also be granted amnesty.

The DREAM Act is nothing but an attempt to open the doors up for amnesty to all of those that are in this country illegally and it must be stopped dead in its tracks.

Harry Reid and the Democrats are never going to give up on granting illegal aliens amnesty and this is the first step towards doing so. They have been unable to pass amnesty in the past–even when there was a Republican president in George W Bush who supported it as well as Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham who sponsored the amnesty plan of a few years ago–but they will stop at nothing in their attempt to pass it.

The lame duck session of the Congress affords Harry Reid one last chance to pass this bill, when the new Congress convenes this issue will be dead on arrival, so he is going to pull out all of the stops in an effort to shove one more bill down the throats of the voters who have already rejected his policies.

He doesn’t give a damn what the American people want, he cares more about what the illegal aliens want and I thought as a duly elected member of the Senate he was supposed to represent the will of the AMERICAN people. What is it about this simple concept that he doesn’t understand?

I would think the states – especially the red states – would be screaming! With almost all the states in the red this will just add more debt to their already enormous deficits? Why aren’t they responding?

I don’t think that this has a chance at passing, but you never know. I don’t trust these people and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pull out all of the stops.

If he does it, it is very wrong. No party, after a total defeat, has any business using a lame duck session to pass an unpopular bill.

I agree 100%! I don’t think this has a chance, it is probably just posturing, but I do not trust the Democrats and I just want to see this go away once and for all!

I have seen this on several sources, and looks like it is valid. I heard rumors about this about 2 months ago, and it bothers me they want to do this now for absolute control.

If he does this and is able to actually force it through, I predict the political fallout will be disastrous for Reid and the Democrats. One sure way of them losing the Senate in 2012.

I don’t know LD, you legalize these folks and they will become instant voters. I know that the version Reid had before the election was so loose on controls that just about anybody would fall under the act. If they can get those voters before 2012…

That is the plan, legalize them and give them the vote. This has to be stopped right here and now!

I actually heard an interesting theory on this on the Andrew Wilkow show today. His theory is the Democrats want to treat the labor force like a commodity. The only way you affect the price of a commodity is by decreasing or increasing the supply of it. If the DREAM Act passes it will increase the supply of the labor force. This will drive the cost of labor down because there are already too many in the labor force and not enough jobs to go around. This is another way to redistribute the wealth and bring the middle class down and levels the playing field. This is their plan. Bring the middle class to the lower income bracket. Interesting eh?

In reality, that theory is accurate, as they have been trying to eliminate the middle class for a long, long, time, to only have two classes. All the rhetoric that Obamao gives about taking care of the middle class is just that, rhetoric. He is set to destroy it.

He is on course to destroy it, that is for sure! This man needs to be stopped before it is too late. This lame duck session cannot end fast enough.

That is a scary thought indeed, whether that is part of the plan or an unitended consequence it certainly seems as if that scenario will play out. The Democrats union buddies wouldn’t be to happy about that.

    GET ON THE PHONES NOW!
NEED THE FACTS NOT LIES OF THE DREAM ACT?—IT’S ANOTHER STEALTH AMNESTY!
Would you like to know the 10 obnoxious facts about Senator Harry Reid’s DREAM ACT? Not the usual Liberal claptrap that only a proportion of Americans are supposedly to absorb as the truth? Sen. Jeff Sessions put out the following release yesterday on the DREAM Act, that it’s an incremental illegal-alien amnesty bill S.3827. Read Senator Sessions of Alabama statement at:

    http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/253506/and-dream-shall-never-die-mark-krikorian

Call your Senator or Representative at the Washington Switchboard at 202-224-3121. Demand NO DREAM ACT. It’s really a De-Facto Amnesty as another tax on Americans. Fax Congress for free at http://www.numbersusa.com
The DREAM ACT is not limited to students, and that Funding will be another taxpayer’s weighty bill, to contend with in our future years. That the Dream Act provides a safe haven for ANY–illegal alien, that even includes criminals, from being removed or deported if they simply submit an application. Certain criminal nationals will be eligible for Amnesty under the DREAM ACT.

Estimates suggest that at least 2.1 million illegal Aliens will be eligible for the DREAM Act Amnesty. In Reality, We Have No Idea How Many Illegal Aliens Will Apply? Illegal aliens will get In-State tuition benefits. Section 3 of the DREAM Act repeals Section 505 of the illegal immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (8 U.S.C. 1623) which prohibits giving education benefits to an unlawfully present individual unless that same benefit is offered to all U.S. citizens. The Dream Act does not require that an illegal alien finish any type of Degree (Vocational, Two-Year, or Bachelor’s Degree) as a condition of Amnesty. If the alien is unable to complete 2 years of college but can demonstrate that their removal would result in hardship to themselves or their U.S. citizen or LPR spouse, child, or parent, the education requirement can be waived altogether.

The Dream Act does not require that an illegal alien serve in the military as a condition for amnesty, as there is ALREADY a legal process in place for illegal aliens to obtain U.S. Citizenship through a law in place during military action. Under current law (10 USC § 504), the Secretary of Defense can authorize the enlistment of illegal aliens. Once enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces, under 8 USC § 1440, these illegal aliens can become naturalized citizens through expedited processing, often obtaining U.S. citizenship in six months. Despite Their Current Illegal Status, the Dream Act aliens will be given all the rights that legal immigrants receive that include the legal right to sponsor their parents and extended family members for immigration. This means illegal aliens who receive amnesty under the DREAM Act will have the right to immigrate their family members—including the parents who sent for or brought them to the U.S. illegally in the first place—in unlimited numbers as soon as they become U.S. citizens (6 to 8 years after enactment) and are 21 years of age.

When an adult brother or sister receives a green card, the family (spouse and children) of the adult sibling receive green cards as well. Current illegal aliens will get Federal student loans, Federal work study programs, and other forms of Federal financial aid. Section 10 of the DREAM Act allows illegal aliens amnestied under the bill’s provisions to qualify for federal student assistance under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1001 et seq.) in the form of federal student loans. The DHS is prohibited from using this information provided by illegal aliens who’s Dream Act Amnesty applications are denied to initiate their removal proceedings, investigate or prosecute fraud in the application process. it will be extremely hard for DHS to remove aliens who they now know are illegally present in the U.S., because illegal aliens will be able to claim that the legal action is a product of the amnesty application, and DHS will have the nearly impossible task of proving a negative.

The GOP Senators who need to be reminded, who they work for? Bombard all these Senators and Representatives and even inform your State politicians about your stand on this issue?
SEN. JOHN MCCAIN 202-224-2235; 480-897-6289: aide says he “hasn’t made a public statement” and “hasn’t made up his mind.” He stated a tough border security game to get re-elected, while promising illegal alien activists he would “resolve their issues.” (Refresh your memories here.)

SEN. GEORGE LEMIEUX 202-224-3041; 904-398-8586: Recorded message informs callers that he’s “in a meeting.” He has yet to publicly state his position as open-borders extremists step up pressure. UPDATE: LEMIEUX IS A NO.
SEN. RICHARD LUGAR, an original co-sponsor of the DREAM Act amnesty, remains a staunch supporter.
FYI: The following GOP Senators who had been of concern say they are opposed to the stand-along DREAM Act:
SEN. SCOTT BROWN: Staff says he “does not support ANY taxpayer illegal alien amnesty bills,” including the DREAM Act.
SEN. MIKE JOHANNS: Opposed the DREAM Act. Period!
    SEN. GEORGE VOINOVICH: Opposed.
SEN. ORRIN HATCH: A former DREAM Act champion, he is now opposed.

SEN. JUDD GREGG: Staff says he is a likely no vote.

Here’s a look at a few of the key Democrat Senate fence-sitters and those leaning no on the stand-alone vote.
Remember: Your voices and your calls count.
SEN. JIM WEBB OF VIRGINIA 202-224-4024; 703-573-7090; aide says “he hasn’t made a public statement.”
SEN. KENT CONRAD OF NORTH DAKOTA 202-224-2043; 701-258-4648; aide says “he hasn’t released a statement.” Conrad has voted against the DREAM Act in the past.
SEN. BYRON DORGAN OF NORTH DAKOTA 202 224-2551; He voted against the DREAM Act in the past. Staff says he “hasn’t taken a public position.”
SEN. MARK PRYOR OF ARKANSAS 202-224-2353; 501-324-6336; He voted no on the DREAM Act cloture vote in September. Staff says he is “likely” to vote no again, though he hasn’t made an official public statement yet.
SEN. JON TESTER OF MONTANA 202 224-2644; aide says he has voted against the DREAM Act in the past and “he will probably vote against any bill that has amnesty in it.”
SEN. MAX BAUCUS OF MONTANA 202-224-2651; He has opposed the DREAM Act in the past and is a “likely no” again in this session.
SEN. CLAIRE MCCASKILL OF MISSOURI 202-224-6154; She opposed the DREAM Act in the past and staff says she has made no statement changing her position otherwise.
    Note the flip-flopper:
SEN. MARY LANDRIEU OF LOUISIANA 202-224-5824; this lawmaker voted against the DREAM Act in the past, but staff said this morning she now supports it.
This time again, for the sake of so little time to act, the easiest way is to just call the Capitol Switchboard and ask to be directly connected to one of the Senator’s office: 202-224-3121.
