Nancy Pelosi hangs on and will be the House minority leader

November 17, 2010

Over the weekend, Heath Shuler announced that he would run against Nancy Pelosi instead of allowing her to run unopposed for the minority leadership position in the next Congress.

“I’ve said all along I’m hoping that Nancy Pelosi will step aside and will allow the leaders that are available, who are ready to go, but because of her being at the very top right now, no one’s willing to throw their hat in the ring,”

His bid was seen as nothing more than a symbolic attempt to unseat Nancy Pelosi, and today it looks as if his bid was just that. The Democrats held a test vote today and Nancy Pelosi beat Heath Shuler by a 150-43 vote margin, all but assuring that when the real vote is held Nancy Pelosi will be victorious.

So when the new Congress convenes, the person–other than Barack Obama himself, and possibly Harry Reid–that best symbolizes what the voters of America rejected on November 2nd will still be the leader of the minority Democrats in the Congress.  When asked why she deserved to be leader she stated the following:

Because I’m an effective leader, because we got the job done on health care and Wall Street reform and consumer protection. Because they know that I’m the person that can attract the resources both intellectual and otherwise to take us to victory — because I’ve done it before
What she fails to realize is the little fact that the American people have rejected the policies that were passed under her leadership. What she fails to grasp is the fact that her leadership and unwillingness to listen to the people is the very reason why her party is now in the minority. What she ignores is the fact that the backroom deals which were made in order to pass Barack Obama’s radical agenda under the guise of what she calls leadership is exactly what the American people are sick and tired of.
Nancy Pelosi represents the failures of the Democrat majority, and in tandem with Barack Obama and Harry Reid she drove the car from the ditch (to borrow a euphemism from Barack Obama) off of the cliff and the Democrats have rewarded her with another term as leader.
While I would have been more than happy to see the Democrats abandon her, and I would have welcomed her descent into political oblivion, this might be the best thing that could have happened to the Republican party. She will be up front on every issue, and the American people will be constantly reminded of what she did in order to pass Barack Obama’s radical agenda.
The American people rejected the Democrats on November 2nd, but it is apparent that the Democrats have not learned anything from their astonishingly quick demise. The Democrats would have been much better off with electing a new leader with fresh ideas instead of returning to leadership positions the very people that are responsible for the current plight in which they now find themselves.
Having Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama in the spotlight on a daily basis will only serve to remind the American people what they rejected earlier this month. And seeing their faces on television over the next two years will only help to remind the American people that they are still pushing forward on an agenda that the American people have already rejected.
The Democrats have not learned from history and now they are doomed to repeat it.

I am unsure about all this. Democrats aren’t stupid, they are more politically savvy than the GOP could ever dream of being.

Remember the famous Pelosi-ism, “We have to pass it before you can see what’s in it” which was shortly followed by, “the American people will like it”. I think that is exactly what this is.

All the provisions of Obamacare have not been implemented yet, but the dems are counting on the one’s already rolled out and soon to roll out to be big hits with the independents. What message are they sending if they fire the lady that was the real reason obamacare passed? People will quickly forget the democrats who ran from obamacare during the elections, they won’t forget it was Nancy who lead the charge for healthcare reform.

It is a gamble, and I think by keeping Pelosi as leader of the house democrats, it gives them cover. She has always been the poster girl for obamacare, so she will sink or swim with its popularity. But she gets to be the head of the “party of no” now, and the indignation she will exude about any attempt by the GOP to silence the minority will be ear-bleeding to say the least. If she is successful in blocking attempts to defund obamacare, or any other GOP plan during the next 2 years, her stock will rise on the left.

My two cents, I could be wrong…

A very interesting thought, perhaps they still think that the healthcare reform legislation will gain in popularity and they will be able to ride it back into power. I don’t see that happening, but I do think that they Democrats are arrogant enough to believe it will happen.

Like I said, I could be wrong, but if the last two elections have proven anything, voter sentiment in the US can change quite dramatically in 2 years.

Very true, who could have predicted that after the huge anti-Bush wave that swept Barack Obama into power that the voters would turn on him this quickly?
