Lame duck Senate may attach DREAM Act to a Haiti orphan bill

November 24, 2010

While I was reading this article about how the Senate is preparing to have a shortened recess to provide themselves with more time in order to pass controversial bills that will have no chance of passage with the new Congress in January, I read with interest and concern about the Senate’s latest attempt to pass the DREAM Act.

But before I get to the main point of this post, I wanted to touch on the fact that the Democrats who are still in power are going to attempt to pass Barack Obama’s agenda even after the American people have rejected it. While it is not surprising that the Congress is going to neglect the will of the people in order to pass these controversial bills, because we saw this disregard for the will of the American people when they forced healthcare reform on an unwilling public, it is nonetheless aggravating that they are still unwilling to listen to the people who spoke so vociferously just a few short weeks ago.

  From the linked article above:

A relatively non-controversial food safety bill that’s stalled on the floor over procedural squabbling is poised to eat up the beginning of next week as Reid pushes to pass the bill over GOP objections.

In addition, the Senate is expected to take up a defense bill with the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, a ratification of the nuclear arms treaty with Russia, a funding bill for the federal government, an immigration bill to provide educational opportunities for children of illegals – and the biggest fight of all, whether to extend the Bush-era tax cuts

First let me comment on the issue of the food safety bill, regardless of what this article claims, the food safety bill is in fact very controversial indeed. It will basically legislate small farms and private growers who sell their products to farmer’s markets out of business while catering to the large farms and restaurants who are most responsible for the recent food related contaminations, while placing the FDA underneath the Department of Homeland Security. The only reason that there is not more public outrage over this bill is the fact that the Senate quietly passed it without the knowledge of the American people and they did this because they know that if the contents of this bill were known by the public, the public would reject it.

The fact that the Democrats are going to such measures to pass the agenda that the American people have already rejected is proof positive that the Congress does not give a damn about the wishes of the people that they were elected to represent in the first place. Perhaps if they had listened to us in the first place they would have remained in power and would not have to resort to such insidious measures in order to pass their agenda.

Speaking of insidious, it is now time to get to the crux of this post; the DREAM Act and the Democrats latest attempt at passing this bill.

One of the most controversial aspects of the comprehensive immigration reform legislation that President Bush tried to ram through the Congress against the will of the American people was the DREAM Act. Once the people learned about the DREAM Act, the final nail was driven into President Bush’s attempt at granting amnesty to illegal aliens, but the DREAM Act has not gone away.

Knowing how controversial the DREAM Act was, and realizing that the DREAM Act could never be passed as a stand alone bill, the Democrats attempted to attach the DREAM Act to a defense funding bill earlier this year figuring that Republicans would never vote against war funding while we had troops in the field. The Democrats miscalculated on this however and the defense funding bill was defeated until the Democrats agreed to remove the DREAM Act from it.

Undaunted by their recent failure, Harry Reid promised to hold a vote on the DREAM Act as a stand alone bill in the lame duck Congress once again, and Barack Obama urged the Congress to pass it as a “down payment” on comprehensive immigration reform. But Harry Reid still must realize that the DREAM Act has no chance of passage if it is brought to the floor for a stand alone vote so he is readying “Plan B.”

House Democrats, still in control for the lame-duck period, hope to pass the DREAM Act, but it remains unclear whether that would go as a stand-alone measure or be tacked onto a bill granting permanent resident status to orphaned Haitians. The Haiti legislation is non-controversial and enjoys procedural advantages, making it an attractive vehicle for DREAM advocates
The Congress is scheduled to take a vote on granting amnesty to children who were orphaned by the earthquake in Haiti. This bill is considered non-controversial and is expected to pass the Congress, so Democrats are now considering attaching the DREAM Act to the Haiti bill in one more attempt to pass a bill that the American people oppose by a large margin.

Harry Reid is hoping that Republicans will cave in on the DREAM Act in order to pass the Haiti orphan bill because he feels the Republicans will be branded as non caring out of touch elitists if they vote against helping the orphans of Haiti. He is gambling that the Republicans will fear a public relations disaster if they can be held to blame for not taking care of orphans, but the Republicans can not afford to fall for this latest attempt at granting amnesty to the children of illegals during the lame duck Congress.

Republicans must vote against the Haiti orphans bill if it contains the DREAM Act and then they must be vocal in their reason for the opposition. They must tell the American people that they are in favor of helping the orphans but not at the expense of granting amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. They must show the American people that the Democrats decided to use the Haiti orphans bill as a political tool in an attempt to pass the DREAM Act, and they must let the American people know that the Democrats defeated the Haiti orphans bill by  putting the political issue of granting amnesty to millions of illegals above the care and well being of the very orphans the Democrats are claiming they want to help.

Tell the truth about the DREAM ACT?

AMERICAN TAXPAYERS MUST READ THE FULL TEXT OF S 3827, BEFORE THEY CONDEMN THOSE AGAINST THE LAW. THIS DREAM ACT MUTANT LAW HAS MANY HEADS, THAT WILL HAVE BAD IMPLICATIONS ON OUR FUTURE. IT MUST BE TABLED AND THEN REVISED WITH COMMON SENSE? THIS IS ANOTHER EXPENSIVE PARTY FAVOR FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS AND WHOLE FAMILIES THAT WILL JOIN THEM LATER? AS FOR STUDENTS GOING ON HUNGER STRIKE, WE CANNOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THIS TYPE OF RECKLESS BEHAVIOR AND MUST NOT BE TOLERATED.

The Dream Act is not a crucial law if aliens want to join the military –right now? They don’t need the Dream Act to enter the military? Just get them to the recruiting center. The Liberals have intentional failed to offer this message in such far left-oriented newspapers as the Huffington Post, New York Time, los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.

Another provision that misleads the public is the fact that illegal aliens can join the military in this time of conflict and collect as a guarantee a path to citizenship at a later date. Under the provisions of the current law (10 USC § 504), the Secretary of Defense can authorize the enlistment of illegal aliens. Once enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces, under 8 USC § 1440, these illegal aliens can become naturalized citizens through expedited processing, often obtaining U.S. citizenship in six months.

These corrupted legislators will not even tell you the real costs, for settling instant-citizenship infants (Anchor Babies?) Here is the last chance to harass your Senator or Representative by phoning (202)224-3121. Challenge them to stop the Left wing zealots for planting another Amnesty in America called the DREAM ACT. HOW CAN SENATOR HARRY REID AND HIS HIERARCHY OF LIBERAL CRONIES, PUSH PASSAGE OF THE DREAM ACT WHEN 15 TO 22 MILLION AMERICANS ARE GROVELING FOR A JOB? IN MOST CASES ANY JOB TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES?

Go to http://www.numbersusa.com website for in-depth information on illegal immigration and what you can do to stand for our sovereignty and citizen rights? The Tea Party is adamant that no new laws must–NOT–find passage until the real DOUBLE border fence is secure. That no new visas should be implemented until the Guest Worker fraud is extinguished, which businesses owners and their lawyers undertake annually. The Tea Party will blacklist any politician, including those lawmakers they backed, if they cater to illegal immigration and the DREAM ACT–as is?

Here is the full text of the Dream Act (S. 3827: Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2010:

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s111-3827

READ the facts about the Dream Act and not the propaganda from Senator Harry Reid’s Liberal party leadership that must–END? Sen. Jeff Sessions put out the following release last week on the DREAM Act, that it’s an incremental illegal-alien amnesty bill. IT IS A VERY CAREFULLY PLANNED AMNESTY, FULL OF RHETORIC? BUT EVERY TAXPAYER NEEDS TO READ THE FULL TEXT OF THE WHITE PAPER. Remember your taxes are certain to accelerate upwards, to pay for all these indecent provisions. American citizens are already having money extorted from them to pay for the babies of illegal aliens born here, the education of illegal alien children, the health care for all family members and crammed prisons and jails for convicted illegal alien felons. All needs to be paid for by your taxes? High on the list of Negatives is that the students will be able to sponsor immediate family members under the chain migration law.

Not so much the students who would become naturalized citizens, but the chain migration that would snowball for all family members. As I have said before we are committing financial suicide, because the majority of guarantors never honor their affidavits to support the people they vouch? In the end the older family folks who have never paid into the Social Security system, become another public welfare liability. Hundreds of thousands or may be millions have been allowed into America on the surety of the original sponsor, who failed to support his-her immediate family. Over the years taxpayers have been confronted with this issue, as the US government never had the man-power to enforce this sponsorship law. Years of non-compliance has become yet another Social Security, (SSI) Supplementary Income of Tax payers left to pay even heavier taxes in support of people who were sponsored and then neglected. The amount of money that cannot even be estimated, that is being appropriated every year to account for the illegal immigration invasion.

The invasion hasn’t stopped and never will until we cut of all welfare entitlements?

WANT THE REALITY OF COSTS? GOOGLE—Illegal immigrant costs and find out for yourself and then you decide? Then go to the Heritage Foundation website and it will explain with graphs, projections and text by the reputable in-depth analysis by Robert Rector.

Next week will add further enticements for illegal immigrants to come here, if this Dream Act passes?

Excellent conclusions. The GOP also needs to tell the American people they will happily pass the Haiti Orphan bill once the new congress starts, and give the Dream act a chance as its own bill just so they won’t look obstructionist and can say they are compromising, not just presenting their own agenda.

Agreed. The GOP needs to make the American people understand that these two bill deserve separate cinsideration, that each one should be judged on their merits alone.

Excellent post with excellent logic Steve. They use the cover of pressure and intimidation to get the focus of the public concentrating on that (read: TSA arrogance unleashed by the pupper masters in power, and other public stances), while slipping in the back door in the dark to rob, steal, and terrorize. It is all done on purpose, playing us for fools. It is with vigilance that we have to be aware, and strike with open intent to take down those who want to rule against the will of the people. Pressure MUST be brought to bear to this dying ember of arrogant hostility who want to leave a scorch earth policy against the freedom of the common man, and against the coming congress to loudy proclaim our will to those who claim to represent us. We MUST be vigilant, or we will loose all our precious freedom fought so bravely with great wisdom by the founding fathers, and all those throughout history of our wonderous country. And above all, as a nation, to reach out to God, pleading for His mercies, and forgiveness.

Very true Jon! We must remain vigilant and we must remain focused because these people do not have what is best for our country as their priority. They need to be stopped!

I wonder if there is a way to amend the process of bill passing, making it transparent, by not allowing the appendage of one bill to another. That would be really nice.

I believe the Congress can do this because the constitution gives the Congress the right to determine the rules of its proceedings in Article 1 Section 5. It seems to me that both houses of the Congress could vote to disallow attaching one bill to another.

I agree Dominique. It might force them to pick and choose what they want to pass because every bill would be stand alone. It might weed out the unnecessary junk.

It is a great idea for a rule change, I just don’t think the Congress has it in them to make this change.

This article is incorrect. A telephone survey of the American public showed 70% supported passing a law granting legal status to children brought to the United States illegally as children. In 2004, 48% percent supported it. This shows the American public becoming increasingly sympathetic to this cause. Interestingly, in the new poll, 60% of Republicans and 80% of Democrats favor passing such a law.

Okay, taking your survey as correct, why then is the lame duck Democrat Senate tacking in on a bill instead of letting it go through as a standalone bill? If all this support is out there, should pass with no problem.
