Lame duck Senate kills the DREAM Act

December 19, 2010

This has been a pretty good week to be a conservative. First Harry Reid was forced to kill his $1 trillion, 2,000 page, earmark laden spending bill which nobody had a chance to read, and yesterday the lame duck Senate failed to get the 60 votes necessary for cloture on the DREAM Act, killing this bill for the foreseeable future.

The DREAM Act is probably the one piece of legislation that I feared the lame duck Senate might be able to ram through before the new Congress would convene in January, but thankfully this backdoor amnesty bill was shot down once again. This bill has been around for about ten years and it has been introduced several times since its inception; this was the most controversial aspect of the McCain/Kennedy/Bush attempt at amnesty a few years ago, and ultimately when the American people heard about the DREAM Act they rose up and stopped President Bush’s attempt at comprehensive immigration reform.

Until President Bush’s attempt at granting illegal aliens amnesty I believe that the DREAM Act was a little known piece of legislation, but since that time it has become the pet bill of many on the left (and at least three on the right–Richard Lugar, Lisa Murkowski and Bob Bennett–and we can’t forget the usual suspects who we still cannot trust, McCain, Graham, Snowe, and Collins.) as what they consider a small show of proof to the illegals that they are serious about granting them amnesty eventually. (Remember Barack Obama called the DREAM Act a down-payment on immigration reform.) The DREAM Act is no longer an obscure piece of legislation, it has been thrust into the consciousness of many Americans. And Americans simply do not like it.

This news means that in all likelihood the DREAM Act is dead for the next two years, but we must pay attention because this bill has a way of resurfacing every so often. When the new Senate convenes in January there may be one last ditch effort to pass the DREAM Act again. The question is: Will there be enough RINOs left that will be willing to vote for the DREAM Act? I think it is a longshot at best, but even so I do not see any way this legislation will ever make it through the new House of Representatives.

This was a great victory for the American people, but it is not the end. As I stated above this legislation has a habit of resurfacing and I am sure we haven’t heard the last of it. We must keep watching because we simply cannot trust Harry Reid to leave this bill on the table for very long.

That was, indeed, great news. But it will be back, your are right.

Looks like the census coming out will be in our favor as well. Republican States will pick up a lot more seats.. Northeast will loose. All of course if the Republicans get some backbone, and don’t cave on this. But this was the big one for now. Good news indeed.

And not only that but with the Republicans winning so many governorships the redistricting that will take place will be in our favor as well.

We just have to fight it every time it comes along. We can expect to see this or similar type legislation from now on.

I was surprised that this failed. I was very worried about it. One thing that makes me worry about it coming back is that the supporters of it aren’t making a ton of noise. They should be burning stuff or abusing police. They aren’t. Unless, that is, they know something we don’t?

I thought for sure they would somehow manage to get this through, I am so happy that it failed.
