The ATF wants high powered rifle sales to be reported to the federal government

December 20, 2010

With the exception of Barack Obama and Janet Napolitano most people understand how serious the problem at the Mexican border is. Between the illegal invasion and the drug gang violence that is constantly spilling over the border into the United States the American people who live on the Mexican border live in a constant state of high alert, hoping that they do not become directly affected by the government’s ineptitude at keeping them safe.

So while illegal immigrants are allowed to enter the United States unmolested and while the federal government fails to take the necessary measures to protect the citizens of the United States, people are wondering when will the federal government do something on this issue.

Well, the wait is over because the ATF is finally ready to take action on the Mexican border. Unfortunately while illegal immigrants continue to stream over the border the ATF has put the American citizens who live on the border in their crosshairs. (Pardon the pun, which will be evident shortly.)

The ATF is asking for emergency powers which would mandate that all gun shops on the Mexican border report to the federal government every single person that buys two or more high powered rifles within five days. Their justification for trampling on the rights of law abiding American citizens is the fact that these high powered rifles are the weapon of choice with the Mexican drug lords, but this excuse just does not hold water.

How many Mexican drug lords do you suppose are walking into American gun shops and legally purchasing these weapons? Not many, if any. The Mexican drug lords are not legally purchasing the weapons and anyone who thinks that this new emergency power is going to prevent the drug lords from acquiring these weapons is simply not looking at this realistically. The truth is that the vast majority–if not all–of the people who are legally buying the high powered rifles at American gun shops are American citizens, and I would guess they are buying them because they feel the need to protect themselves against an enemy the federal government doesn’t have the will to protect them from in the first place.

In other words the ATF is looking to capitalize on a crisis (at least in this case it is a real crisis, and not a manufactured crisis) in an attempt to implement new gun control laws on law abiding citizens who have the constitutional right to possess these weapons.

Once again we have a government agency whose priorities are misplaced. Instead of focusing on the crisis that is illegal immigration, the federal government is going to use this crisis to punish the American citizens who are unfortunate enough to be victims of a federal government which doesn’t take their plight serious in the first place. The government should be focusing on those non-citizens who are breaking the law, not on the law abiding citizens of America.

But this is not about stopping the flow of illegal immigrants and it is not about protecting the American people from the drug violence, it is all about making it harder for American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Rahm Emanuel once said that a good crisis should not go to waste and the ATF is all too willing to subscribe to that philosophy.

Question number one. How are they going to define what a high-powered rifle is?

Question number two. Do they seriously think this is going to stop drug dealers from obtaining weapons? As you have already stated, it’s not the criminals who will be deterred, but rather the law abiding citizens who are trying only to protect themselves.

Question number one is a good one. Who gets to define what these weapons are, and if we allow this to begin we know that list will slowly expand.
I don’t think that they care if this stops drug dealers because I think their real goal is to stop the American people from owning guns. I am so sick of these people treating us as if we are the ones who have done something wrong.

This is how a tyrannical government works Steve. Use a crisis or a problem to get their foot in the door and steal out liberties away. This is what they are doing in this case. Great post my friend. Thanks for adding the SENTRY JOURNAL to your blogroll.

This is exactly what they are up to John, they are trying to slowly take away our liberties. You are welcome for the link, I am so glad that you are back!

When I read this earlier, I got the immediate sense that this is a backdoor way to keep tabs on who is buying what so that the government can easier target their tracking programs of American citizens. They will quickly identify the buyers as threats to national security and place them on watch lists. This way when they need to execute a warrant for Homeland Security(federal police state) measures, they’ll have documentation to present to a judge for search and seizure writs. To me, it seems as though by doing it out in the open like this, they expect that many people will doubt the reality of what they’ve lined up. It’s nothing other than just keeping tabs on the number of rifles in the area because clearly no one is expected to be buying these rifles to turnaround and sell in Mexico. The government knows that; it’s just a way of identifying the “enemy” for the government legally. Any American who buys 2 or more rifles is now a “home grown terrorist” or a “domestic threat” or whatever nonsense we can all be called.

Sadly, I think you have hit the nail on the head. The government is looking at building a huge database on all Americans and it stands to reason that they want to know who has what guns.

I just caught this from abcnews.com, in an interview with Eric Holder…
        http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/attorney-general-eric-holders-blunt-warning-terror-attacks/story?id=12444727&tqkw&tqshow=GMA

“It is one of the things that keeps me up at night,” Holder said. “You didn’t worry about this even two years ago — about individuals, about Americans, to the extent that we now do. And — that is of — of great concern.”

“The threat has changed from simply worrying about foreigners coming here, to worrying about people in the United States, American citizens — raised here, born here, and who for whatever reason, have decided that they are going to become radicalized and take up arms against the nation in which they were born,” he said.

…and THERE you have it. All of the proof of what is being done with this law! HOLY CRAP! Like I said, by doing it out in the open, no one will be the wiser to question it. Steve, and also my fellow Americans… we’ve got trouble so much larger than what we’ve realized. What we think of as being ‘down the road’ is already here and despite a 2 year Republican-controlled congress, we still have 2 more years of Obama and this administration destroying our freedoms. Maybe it is time for the Impeach Obama rallying cry to go on full volume. This has to come to a stop before anything more serious happens. This is no longer about just the 2nd Amendment being held in violation… we’re headed into very real and very dark corners now.

I saw this as well today Eric. It really is unbelievable, our government considers us the enemy. I will be writing about this tonight.

Excellent stuff Steve, I only have one issue with your post, you said:

In other words the ATF is looking to capitalize on a crisis (at least in this case it is a real crisis, and not a manufactured crisis) in an attempt to implement new gun control laws on law abiding citizens who have the constitutional right to possess these weapons.

I would have to disagree, this is most definitely a manufactured crisis. If the government would secure our border like they are legally obligated to do, then we would not be having these problems.

As far as the other points, spot-on my brother. I love how the ATF is “asking for emergency powers”. So…the government is admitting there is an emergency on our border? But the best method they have for combating it is to stomp on our constitution? How about stomping on some Mexican bad guys for a change?

Great point fleeceme, this is a manufactured crisis because the government could stop it at any moment but choose not to, I didn’t look at it that way.

Look at the good news– Janet is out there looking for the bad guys, 364 days a year. We need only worry about the one day.. will she tell us when it is coming???

I think Eric Holder has solved the problem. Any MUSLIM that buys a high powered rifle should be put on Janet’s homegrown terror list. Good idea.

I was talking to a local friend that is a Class III dealer and his understanding is, ANY rifle, .22 or larger, that is magazine fed…

Not trying to give them any pointers on their standards for what constitutes “high-powered” but a .22 does not exactly qualify.

Also, it has to be magazine fed? So I can buy as many Remington 700’s as I want, sweet, I will take a few in .380 Winchester. Or I can go pickup some Springfield Model 1873, .45-70’s. Considering this round has twice the power of a .44 magnum, it definitely qualifies as “low-powered”.

Damn, I forgot my point…oh yeah, the government is stupid.
