Michele Bachmann to New Hampshire: “You’re the state where the shot was heard around the world”

March 12, 2011

As we New Hampshirites know, contrary to popular belief, the Revolutionary War actually started months before the “shot heard around the world” when in New Hampshire in December of 1774 Paul Revere made a much less known ride to warn the patriots that the British were coming to reenforce Fort William and Mary.

Equipped with this information 400 patriots raided Fort William and Mary and captured cannon and almost 100 barrels of gunpowder before the British could reenforce their fort. This was an act of war and was the beginning of the Revolution, while most of the country did not yet realize it a “silent” revolution had already begun in the state of New Hampshire before the first shots were fired; and it is believed that some of this captured gunpowder was used in the misnamed Battle of Bunker Hill.

With that little history lesson behind us, let’s move to the present: Michele Bachmann is entertaining the idea of running for president, so she did what all presidential candidates do early in the process–she made a trip to New Hampshire. Concord New Hampshire to be exact. The very place where the “shot heard around the world” occurred–at least according to Michele Bachmann:

You’re the state where the shot was heard around the world at Lexington and Concord

She uttered those words earlier today; can we simply chalk this up as a slip of the tongue? Certainly she knows that the “shot heard around the world” occurred in a town in Massachusetts and not in Concord New Hampshire, right? Not so fast because at an event in New Hampshire on Friday night she said the following:

It’s your state that fired the shot that was heard around the world, you are the state of Lexington and Concord, you started the battle for liberty right here in your backyard

You would think that after making this mistake on Friday night that somebody would have corrected her and made sure that she did not repeat this gaffe one day later, but no, she did. In a way she is right, the battle for liberty did start in New Hampshire–as I outlined above–but not the battle that she was talking about and I would guess that she has no idea about the raid on Fort William and Mary, so she couldn’t even try to claim that she was confusing the raid on Fort William and Mary for the “shot heard around the world.”

This is not likely to endear her to the conservatives in New Hampshire who will certainly be offended by being confused with the state of Massachusetts. It is true that over the last several years it has been hard to distinguish many differences between the two states, but last November we turned a corner in New Hampshire and the last thing that we want to happen is for us to be confused with our liberal brethren directly to the south.

Is this a death knell in Bachmann’s potential candidacy? Certainly not, but she had better get her facts straight before she appears in New Hampshire again if she hopes to have any chance at winning a primary in New Hampshire.

Here is a suggestion for Michele Bachmann; the next time you are in New Hampshire talk about our independent streak and make sure you back up that assertion by mentioning that New Hampshire was the first state to declare independence from Great Britain a full six months before the Declaration of Independence was signed, because at least then you would be correct.

From the article I linked to:

Getting Massachusetts confused with New Hampshire while speaking to a group of Granite State Republicans is something most GOP hopefuls avoid. New Hampshire conservatives are fiercely proud of their income-tax-free state’s libertarian traditions — see “Live Free or Die” — and consider their neighbor to the south a haven of left wingers.

I don’t know Steve. I’m a pretty big fan and would have to say that’s a pretty big gaff – twice. And while I try and imagine the West Coast may not be as tuned in to history in Mass and New Hampshire, it was, after all, the start of the Revolution and I’m thinking it’s going to haunt more than a Yankee Redsox mixup.

It is the repeating of the gaffe that makes it worse, this is US history after all. Later she was quoted as saying that A-Rod was her favorite Sox player. Just kidding.

She is from the midwest— Ma and NH are practically the same thing. I know she made a mistake, but come on! she won’t get the nomination anyway. And I get a little defensive about her b/c I’m getting a little sick of the left bashing Michelle and other pro-life women b/c they stand up for everyones rights- including unborn babies. Not to mention anyone who professes their faith in Jesus Christ. I know, Steve, this is politics– I’m just venting, K?

This isn’t bashing someone because of their politics – this is basic US History, something that my 11 year old son knew when asked this morning. Perhaps they don’t teach US History in the great state of Minnesota, I don’t know. This is just another in Ms. Bachmann’s line of botches. How can she spin this to be the fault of CNN or the democratic party?

Well,I guess I’ll step into it a bit, as I have called Michelle Bachman a “parasitic piranha” many times, and told her outright I could no longer support her due to her actions and have asked her several times for her to remove me from her mailing list.

Granted she is a Christian, has raised foster kids, and that takes a special person to do so. It also means she knows how to use the system and do well on it.

My first exposure to her was via the Mark Levin Show, and I honor that man as brilliant. Somehow, she got onto his program and asked for his endorsement and I somehow feel she used him to get to the center conservative base that the “Great One” touches. I did check out her site, donated to her campaign, and watched it unfold.

Endless letters that “SHE” is the T-Party, Send Money, Send Money, Send Money, “She” is being attacked, and the host of other things. She started getting bolder and more brazen, equating herself as the leader of the Tea Party, and developed the “In Your Face” attitude she is famous for now. The best example was her last minute “Michelle Bachman State of the Union Address” wherein she claimed she was “asked to do it” and no one wanted to broadcast it live, even Fox put here to a clickback after the program and cut her out. I was irked that she tried to take over and put Paul Ryan into a deminished position who was EXCEPTIONALLY QUALIFIED to give an outstanding Republican (which now incorporates the Tea Party who gave imputus to the Republican win last November), who is from Wisconsin, and a bonefide of the Tea Party and Republican Party who knew what he was doing and was positioned to speak in that position following Obama. Out of the dark came the piranha to try to take contol and devour. It is bad enough that the socialists, progressives, liberals, et all want to control us and tell us what to do and are trying to do so, that we don’t need an upstart woman who lacks Presidential Qualities or experience to do the same to us, where there is a quality field who are more qualified then her who have already laid the groundwork over the years, and have experience to back them up.

Just my thoughts and personal opinion. I guarantee, I will NOT vote for her if she runs for President, nor support her in any way.

That, perhaps, is an understatement. If you look at the “bills” she’s pushing, everyone thinks its “her” idea, and she skillfully uses language to mask that it isn’t “her” idea, but she is pushing it, and has stolen it from others who actually put the bills in place and promote them, or other ideas. A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE is the $105 Billion Slush Fund that will fund Obamacare for the next ten years bypassing Congressional oversite and funding, that was “buried and hidden” in the Obama Care program, and was discovered by another congressman, then via the Heritage, and lo and behold, Michelle Bachman is at the forefront of public announcements and demanding that Obama “give back the money.” She hijacks things and rides on the wave of them. This deal about “birth certificate” with Obama is going to slap her in the face too I believe. She just wants the attention and center stage, and is VERY SLICK. Be careful with her. Jon

Yeah, me too. Still, these comments have been illuminating, esp Jon Randall’s. Sure wish a lot of these contenders (Bachman, Romney, Gingrich, Huckabee) would bow out for the good of the country.

I fully agree with you. I call Huckabee “The Huckster,” as he is NOT presidential, but looking for a free meal ticket. He acted more like a Democrat and raised taxes in Arkansas then any Democrat that I know down there (and I used to be a Democrat on on the Ouachita County Central Committee, and had personally met and shook hands with Bill Clinton, before I finally resigned due to Walter Mondale, followed by a speech by Jeanne Kirpatrick and then Ronald Reagan, but, that is another story). Romney is a RINO, and who passed a Massachusetts Health Care like ObamaCare and that is government involvement in the individuals life and takdown of choice, Gingrich I wrote to and said he would be like Boehner, looking to “make the deal” and not do what the voters want: TO TAKE THE GOVERNEMENT DOWN AND DOWNSIZE IT DRAMATICALLY. And of course, you know my feelings about the Parisitic Piranaha Queen. She sliding in on the back of Palin who is more Presidential with more experience, but I’m not sure she’ll fly. I personally like John Bolton, Scott Walker/Chris Christie combo, and Allen West so far. Trump has given $50K to Rahm Emmanual, which makes him highly suspect as to what side of the fence he was on.

I understand the article is about the history behind Ms. Bachmann’s attempt to reach her audience and as someone who was there it is actually what I took from her story. Perhaps she tried too hard to reach out with the ” Shot Heard … ” statement, but really, grow some skin up there in N.H. Do you really walk around all day thinking about this? Just waiting to pounce? It is too bad this history mistake is what passes for news these days in many of the news outlets. It explains why the other side of the issue is in the dark and does not see the danger right under our noses. Her history comment took about 30 seconds out of a 40 minute speech. Where is the rest of the information she shared of what’s going in in DC? I go to my job everyday and appreciate hearing from someone who is there telling me how bad things really are. Unlike all these remarkable history buffs out there, I can google the “Shot Heard Around the World” anytime I want? The media is keeping you in the dark for a reason, wake up. If you have no problem looking our kids in the eye you won’t understand the rest of what Ms. Bachmann said and that is too bad. Using the term Tea Bagger or saying someone is dumb as many times as possible in a sentence won’t help.

It is more than just a “history mistake” to me. As someone who consistently complains that our elected officials do not understand the history of the United States and the principle that we were founded on, I take this issue seriously. If the people we elect do not understand the history of the United States how can we expect then to uphold the ideals we were founded on?
Yes, you can “google” the shot heard around the world and come up with the answer in seconds, it is too bad that Michele Bachmann didn’t take a couple of minutes to fact check a part of our history that is so obvious before she made here statements.

I can only hope the crowd erupted in laughter at this gaffe of Bachmann’s. It’s really the only appropriate response. And I hope she can laugh at herself. I don’t know if Obama does, but the two do seem to be different levels of fuck-ups. Also, I saw Bachmann in the Tea Party response to the SOTU. If I hadn’t ever heard of her before, that would have been enough to run me off.

Intersting, yet another attempt as grabbing the spotlight from someone else? You are shared quite a bit of information about Bachmann that I did not know–and to be perfectly honest, I haven’t been paying that much attention to her. But it appears as if I will have to cross her off of my list.

By the way………if you noticed in the lower portions of that article…it was KING who discovered the $105 Billion Slush Fund………and……

“At King’s request the Congressional Research Service (CRS) produced a report, published Feb. 11, that itemized all the provisions in the Obamacare legislation that authorize automatic spending that Congress does not have to appropriate in each future year. The CRS report lists each of these items and provides their price tag. The total cost of these automatic spending provisions, the CRS determined, is approximately $105.5 billion over 10 years.

Of this $105.5 billion in automatic Obamacare spending, $4.95 billion will take place in this fiscal year.”

Then along came the parisitic pirahna who jumped on it, took lead and went national by herself, giving the impression SHE DISCOVERED IT and ran with it.
