New Hampshire Senate passes “right-to-work” bill

April 20, 2011

Earlier today–by a vote of 16-8–the New Hampshire Senate passed a “right-to-work” bill which would give people who are employed by union companies the right to “opt out” of the union if they chose to do so. The bill will now head back to the House–which has already passed its own version of the bill by a vote of 221-131–where they will vote on the changes which the Senate made to the original bill.

Governor John Lynch has already promised to veto this bill if it makes it to his desk and it appears likely that it will. While the Senate passed the bill with a veto proof majority, the House did not. This bill’s fate lies within the New Hampshire House. The House probably will pass the bill with the changes the Senate put in it, but as of yet there is no word as to whether or not these changes will swing enough House Republicans who voted against the original bill to over-ride the threatened veto.

  Stay tuned…..

Kudos to the N.H. Senate! Help me out here…I simply can’t understand how ANYONE justifies NOT having right-to-work legislation. Seriously, throw out the “protecting the worker” bull $hit…what are the justifications for forcing people into unions when they don’t want to be a member and taking money out of their pockets to pay union dues? I’m from Texas, which is a right-to-work state, so this isn’t ever an issue…and thankfully unions are close to non-existent in Texas…but I’ve never heard how they justify it. Ideas?

It seems to me that a person should have this choice; if the union is doing a good job there would be no reason for that person to opt out but if they didn’t feel the union was doing well they wouldn’t have to join. Makes sense to me.

My only experience with a union was when I was told it was $60 per month to be in the union or $80 per month to not be in it. Will that be the case in NH?

That’s interesting, I guess we will have to wait and see. If the bill passes that is.

Even if Lynch is overidden, I see trouble down the road for those that opt out. One step at a time though.

I thought the same thing also; I am sure people will be too intimidated by the unions to opt out.

We’ve been a *Right to Work* state for a long time, and still, there are Unions, and Union members… Stupidity just can’t be explained…

This should be the law of the land everywhere. It’s a freedom issue, nothing less. People should be able to choose their affiliations.
