Newt Gingrich supports healthcare mandates
As I wrote when it was learned that Newt Gingrich was in fact going to run for president, I have no intention of voting for him. I find him to be morally suspect and a flip-flopper on the issue of cap and trade. He appeared in a commercial with Nancy Pelosi claiming that action (cap and trade) must take place in order to save the world, but when it became politically expedient for him to do so he did an about face and now claims that he opposes cap and trade. Much like Mitt Romney and his evolving positions Newt Gingrich cannot be trusted.
But yesterday came revelations that change my mind–I will not only not give Newt Gingrich my support but I will actively work against him to ensure he does not gain the Republican nomination. On “Meet the Press” yesterday David Gregory called out Newt Gingrich for comments he made during the healthcare debate in 1993, here is what Gingrich said back then:
“I am for people, individuals–exactly like automobile insurance–individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance, and I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance”
That is interesting because it sounds quite a bit like the policy of healthcare mandates that Barack Obama has put in place, surely he cannot support Barack Obama’s healthcare mandates can he? David Gregory pressed Newt Gingrich and asked him if the mandates included in the healthcare law enacted by Barack Obama we the same as what he was advocating for in 1993. Newt Gingrich tried to claim that they were not quite the same, but he never quite explained why his version of requiring people to have healthcare insurance was any better than Barack Obama’s version–or how it was constitutional for that matter.
As you can read here, Newt Gingrich tried desperately to distance his healthcare mandates from Barack Obama’s mandates but the fact is that you either support forcing the American people to purchase a goods and service or you do not, and it is quite evident that Newt Gingrich supports some sort of healthcare mandate and for that alone he is no better than Barack Obama.

Most Republicans were actually very supportive of mandates, that is until Obama became the champion of it. Only libertarians truly support a free market health care system. Not since the Flexner Report have we had that system in this country.

And I find myself gravitating towards them more and more every day.

People are always saying that sure , Newt has some moral baggage but he is a really smart guy and has a lot of good ideas. I’m not buying any of it. He is an establishment Republican of the highest order.

Yes Newt is establishment at a time where we do not need an establishment candidate. He represents the old blood and everything that is wrong with Washington.

Hey, Newt’s always good for a surprise, but yeah, I think his candidacy expired this weekend, along with Romney’s.
And Trump’s.
All in all, a good week for the GOP. Congratulations, you guys!
Take good care and may God bless us all!

Trump, Newt, and Romney: Good riddance, although it is hard to believe this has been a good week for Republicans because the truth is there is still nobody out there who can beat Barack Obama.

Actually Ron Paul is polling best against Obama. Was only 1 point back at one point, now about 7. Closest chance to beat Obama.

It’s meaningless to make such decisions eighteen months out – if Ron Paul is “only” 7 points behind Obama, does that mean that, say, Herman Cain’s supporters will rally to Paul should Cain drop out? Paul’s support is solid, but those who support other candidates aren’t as likely to flock to Paul when their candidates drop out.

I would have to agree on that one, although Gingrich and Romney probably won’t go quietly.

Yeah, Newt seems to have killed his chances shorty after making his intentions known. I have a new post up about his flip-flop on Ryan’s budget.

The way it is going it shouldn’t be too long before we have an answer to your question.

After his disastrous interview on Meet the Press I believe he’s done. How can you be that out of touch with the Tea Party movement and the conservative base to champion individual mandates? I mean this is one of the top issues of the base and he takes the side of big government. Bye Bye Newt…thanks for playing.

He managed to alienate both the Tea Party and the Republican base in a matter of minutes and I think you are right, this just shows that he is out of touch with what is going on across the country.

At least Donald Trump was amusing.

Yes he was, maybe he will stick around without running. I think he will have a hard time staying out of the limelight.
