New Hampshire Senate passes a parental notification bill

May 25, 2011

Back in 2003 New Hampshire passed a parental notification bill which required that the parents of an UNDERAGE girl be notified before their child got an abortion. This law was ruled unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court because it did not include an exemption when the prospective mother’s life was in danger. Rather than add the provisions to the law which would render the law constitutional–because any law which restricts abortion is seen as a threat by liberals–the New Hampshire legislature, which at the time was ruled by a Democrat majority, passed a repeal of the law which was signed by Governor John Lynch.

Today the New Hampshire Senate passed a parental notification law with the exemptions in place which will pass constitutional muster and because this bill has already passed the New Hampshire House it will be headed to Governor John Lynch’s desk for either his signature or his veto. While this bill is far from controversial as 47 states already have similar laws on the books the New Hampshire governor is as of yet undecided on this legislation.

Here in New Hampshire a minor student cannot get an aspirin from the school nurse without parental permission and a student cannot even go on a field trip without parental permission but they are allowed to have an abortion on demand without the parents even knowing what is going on and I find that to be absurd.

Under current New Hampshire law the state has undermined the rights of the parents and it is time to restore the rights of the parents and I highly urge Governor Lynch to sign this bill. It is time for the New Hampshire government to get out of the parenting business and let the parents of these MINORS do what they feel is best for their children–perhaps they will feel an abortion is best and perhaps they will not, but one thing is certain; the parents need to know if their MINOR daughter is contemplating an invasive procedure such as having an abortion. Contrary to the liberal position, the government does not always know what is best.

Very well stated Steve. Objections to these kinds of laws have always baffled me. We’re not talking about an ear piercing here.

Thank you. I don’t understand the opposition to this either, a parent shoule have the right to know when their CHILD is undergoing a procedure such as this.

A parent should know if their 15 year old daughter gets knocked up. And if she is getting an abortion. It’s sad that such a law is required.

It really is sad that we would need a law likke this in the first place, good point. But I guess that is the world that we are living in today.

I agree with Harrison. That these kinds of laws are necessary is a shame. It makes me mad that the Government has inserted itself between the parents and their children. But New Hampshire did it and that is good.

the good news is that at Least Lynch is thinking about it and hasn’t rejected it outright. Sounds like you actually have functioning government there in NH.

I have a feeling he may sign this one, but we will see because it wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t.

It is appalling that this issue even comes up. It just shows how far the left will go to keep abortion available on demand.
