Congressman threatens to cut off funding for the bombing of Libya

May 26, 2011

As we all know by now Barack Obama, under the direction of the United Nations, decided to intervene in Libya’s civil war. Under the War Powers act Barack Obama did not need to seek approval of the Congress for any military engagement that lasted less than 60 days. But that window has passed and Barack Obama shows no signs of asking for congressional approval to continue the war against Libya.

This has not gone unnoticed by some members of the Congress and now Representative  Tom Rooney of Florida is calling on the Congress to deny Barack Obama the funding for the continuance of his war in Libya.

“I think that we’ve gotten to the point, almost, of no return because we’ve gone over the legal term of 60 days

We’re at day 65 now,” said Rooney. “So I think right now we’re operating under the assumption that he’s not going to ask for authorization. We’re not going to debate this. So I think it’s almost–we’re at the point where we have to exercise our right not to fund it until we have a reason to.”

Hey, as I said in my testimony, Libya might be — going militarily into Libya might be the greatest thing in the world but we’ve never even debated it, we haven’t had the administration come and explain why it’s important

Barack Obama tried to tell the American people that action needed to be taken in Libya in order to protect innocent lives. He tried to tell the American people that American values were under attack and that we had a duty to be the moral conscience of the world, but in my opinion that is no justification to insert the United States in the civil war of another country.

If this was truly the goal of this action than surely the United States should also be bombing Syria and Yemen where the same atrocities are currently taking place, yet Barack Obama hasn’t taken a position on the civil wars in these counties, which leads me to believe that there is some ulterior motive behind our bombing of Libya.

I do not believe there is any chance in hell that the Congress would ever vote to cut off funding for the United States’ military action in Libya, but  Tom Rooney threat to cut off the funding might be just what is needed to bring Barack Obama before the Congress to explain what the hell we are doing in Libya in the first place.

Finally some has grown a pair. I don’t understand these Republicans. The Democrats would never let a Republican president get away with doing something similar.

Hopefully it just took one person to stand up first and others will follow, I have my doubts though.

Ignoring the War Powers Act is something only a Democrat could get away with. It was meant to give the president power to step in quickly but require democratic consent to stay that way. One of the biggest non-reported stories of the Obama admin IMO.

A Republican could never get away with this, it is so frustrating to see the media give him a pass on this.

What? Where is Ron Paul? I thought he would be all over this lol. This whole situation just confirms that the administration really doesn’t have a respect for the constitution. If ever there was an imperial presidency, surely it is Obama.

That is a good question, Paul is supposed to be an isolationist and yet even he is quiet about this.

I think you mean non-interventionist – big difference. I’m old enough to remember when America didn’t invade other countries without a declaration of war.

If you believe in the sovereignty of man, and the sovereignty of the USA, then you have to respect the sovereignty of other nations.

You can’t have it both ways, or else the world will look at you as a hypocrite, and rightly so.

        Intervene –
to come between disputing people, groups, etc.; intercede; mediate

        Isolate –
to set or place apart; detach or separate so as to be alone.

I for one don’t think we should be the worlds police force.
        1. we can no longer afford to
        2. I don’t like others butting into my business, do you?

The downfall of America won’t be at the point of a gun, or even a bomb. It will be when the dollar is no longer the reserve currency and it crashes. Our way of life will then be forever changed.

Paul hasn’t been silent on this matter, not sure where you got that information.

        From March 2011

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to introduce a resolution expressing the sense of the Congress that the President is required to obtain in advance specific statutory authorization for the use of United States Armed Forces in response to civil unrest in Libya. As many in the administration, Congress, and elsewhere clamor for the President to initiate military action to support those seeking to overthrow the Libyan regime, Congress sits by, as usual, pretending that Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution does not exist. According to this long-ignored section, “The Congress shall have Power To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water.”

I agree that we should not be the world’s police force. It is very taxing on our country to fuel these foreign wars. And as far as Mr. Paul goes I just said that because I simply hadn’t heard or seen him say anything, but thanks to your link now I know that he has.

The thing that I’m in disbelief about is that the whole anti war crowd is just giving Obama a pass on Libya (well on Iraq and Afghanistan for that matter). I know I shouldn’t be that surprised about the media, but it still leaves me in disbelief.

I do believe that the president should still seek a declaration of ware before going to war, but I do believe that Paul is an isolationist. The term “non-interventionist” might be more appropriate in regards to our involvement in Libya but I do believe that Paul is more of an isolationist when it comes to foreign affairs over all. Perhaps I am wrong but that is my preseption of his policies.

@ janapope, I agree 100%: It is not surprising to me that the media is giving him a pass on his war policies, but it is beyond belief that the anti-war left has given him a pass. If GWB acted as Obama has in Libya and in Afghanistan the left would have crucified him and yet they remain silent now that it is their man who is authorizing these military strikes.

Obama can not and will not be truthful about his motivations in Libya. Or anything else for that matter. But if anyone thinks all this Arab Spring crap is going to end with the middle east embracing freedom you better wake up. This will all end up badly for Israel and the U.S. Look the present crop of America hating tyrants will only be replaced with more America hating Islamic Radicals. They teach toddlers to hate us. Does this sound like a bunch of people who just want freedom? And Obama just sees this as a way to further diminish our standing as a world power and punish Isreal.

You all remember how much endless crap Bush got for all his policies right. Well the left is quite silent on all the same things Obama does. Except for a few really radical lefties like Peter Fonda. Who’s recent comments should have warrented a visit from the secret service. Hell they jumped all over a 13 year old who just commented that the president might want to watch out for suicide bombers.

The “arab spring” is nothing more than a “Tyrant exchange program.”

This is not going to end well; we will have anti-American, anti-Israel regimes across the middle east. A great point about Fonda, why wasn’t he investigated?

The King apparently can do no wrong. The best part is we are now up to our eyeballs in giving them Billions of our/China’s dollars so they can better arm themselves to blow us up next year.
