Barack Obama’s “Red Right Hand”

June 4, 2011

While driving to work the other day I decided to pop a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds CD in; I hadn’t listened to Nick Cave in quite awhile and it would provide a change. One of the songs on the CD I chose is called “Red Right Hand” and it is one of my favorite Nick Cave songs and one of the most popular with his fans.

Most fans tend to agree on where the title of the song came from, but vary on the meaning. The term “Red Right Hand” first appeared in the late 1600’s in a John Milton poem entitled “Paradise Lost,” but there are various opinions on whether the “Red Right Hand” signifies the fiery fury of a jealous and vengeful God, or is the mark of Satan.

I am not about to read the twelve books of the poem to find the true meaning of the term, personally I think the Red Right Hand represents the temptation of Satan with material goods, all I know is this is a great Nick Cave song and it is about an entity who walks the earth making promises to everyone he meets but “ain’t what he seems,” and about halfway through the song I couldn’t help but picture Barack Obama, and how this song seems relevant to the events happening in America today. (The song was written in 1994.)

The opening lyrics describe a dusty, desolate, unattractive setting but then in walks our hero:

On a gathering storm comes
a tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat with
a red right hand

A tall handsome man walks onto the scene of a country in dire need and wanting; in my opinion this can easily be equated to the conditions which led to a gathering storm of public opinion which swept the Democrats into office in 2006 and Barack Obama to the presidency two years later. The gathering storm leads to Democrat majorities and then the tall handsome man enters the scene, sans dusty black coat, but with that red right hand.

He’ll wrap you in his arms,
tell you that you’ve been a good boy
He’ll rekindle all the dreams
it took you a lifetime to destroy
He’ll reach deep into the hole,
heal your shrinking soul

That first line seems as if it could be talking about the whole no personal responsibility mindset that is prevalent in today’s America–everyone is a victim and no one is to blame for their own actions, it’s okay you’ve been a good boy, it’s not your fault. Telling people what they want to hear and not what they need to hear. But then the song goes even further for our hero will reach right into our souls and heal us as would a god. And this strikes an interesting chord with me because Michelle Obama once said this during the 2008 presidential campaign.

That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls – our souls are broken in this nation.

And Barack Obama actually started speaking as if he were the Messiah when he said, “this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” He took political pandering to a new level promising to heal souls as well as the earth and the world’s peoples. Only a man of great arrogance can feel as if he would be able to stop the seas from rising and heal the world. He is the very definition of term “God Complex.”

But it comes with a caveat:

He’s a god, he’s a man,
he’s a ghost, he’s a guru
They’re whispering his name
through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
is a red right hand

He was seen as a god or as a savior put on this earth to save us from the evil Bush regime–that was how he was portrayed by the media and  in his speeches. And his followers still believe that he can do know wrong, they continue to chant his name over this disappearing land–for yes our country is disappearing, at least the country as we know it for we are becoming more and more reliant on socialistic government programs and less self-reliant every day–the red right hand. Need I remind you that red is the color most associated with communism?

You ain’t got no money?
He’ll get you some
You ain’t got no car? He’ll get you one
You ain’t got no self-respect,
you feel like an insect
Well don’t you worry buddy,
cause here he comes

Here come the promises of material goods, more of the same don’t worry about a thing, I will take care of you mentality that breeds laziness, while somehow equating money and material goods as a healing of the soul and self-worth. But somehow it worked, as can be seen here:

KEN ROGULSKI: Why are you here?

WOMAN: To get some money.

ROGULSKI: What kind of money?

WOMAN: Obama money.

ROGULSKI: Where’s it coming from?

WOMAN: Obama.

ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get it?

WOMAN: I don’t know. His stash. I don’t know. I don’t know where he got it from but he’s giving it to us, to help us. We love him. That’s why we voted for him. Obama! Obama!

Here’s how another woman responded to Rogulski’s questions:

ROGULSKI: Did you get an application to fill out yet?

WOMAN: I sure did. And I filled it out, and I am waiting to see what the results are going to be.

ROGULSKI: Will you know today how much money you’re getting?

WOMAN: No, I won’t, but I’m waiting for a phone call.

ROGULSKI: Where’s the money coming from?

WOMAN: I believe it’s coming from the City of Detroit or the state.

ROGULSKI: Where did they get it from?

WOMAN: Some funds that was given by Obama.

ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get the funds?

WOMAN: Obama getting the funds from… Ummm, I have no idea, to tell you the truth. He’s the president.

And who could forget this quote from an Obama supporter: “I won’t have to work to put gas in my car! I won’t have to worry about paying my mortgage! You know, if I help HIM, he’s going to help us!””

A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his
red right hand

Stacks of green paper, such as an economic stimulus plan? But the stacks of money came from that red right hand, the money is not real for it is printed, made out of thin air, which means it is unsustainable and comes at the cost of an increase in virtually everything you want to buy or do because the dollar is basically worthless.

He’ll appear out of nowhere but
he ain’t what he seems
You’ll see him in your head,
on the TV screen
And hey buddy, I’m warning
you to turn it off

Barack Obama truly came out of nowhere; he was chosen years ago and was brought to the Democrat convention in 2004  BEFORE he was even in the Illinois Senate. His path was cleared when his campaign first forced his primary opponent to withdraw and then his general election opponent to withdraw through dirty tactics. He virtually ran unopposed for the state senate. But it was his speech at the convention that first gave him a national name; it was Ted Kennedy who prepped the crowd by telling them they were about to see a future star of the party and telling the people, “just wait until you hear him speak.”

But “he ain’t what he seems.” While in the state Senate, Barack Obama refused to vote for or against any controversial legislation, but he was there for the votes; he simply voted “present.” He did this to keep his slate clean; he did not want to be tied to any controversial issue, so instead of leading on these issues he kept himself quiet. This helped him to keep up the facade that he was not an far left ideologue and now people are finding out the hard way that “he ain’t what he seems.” This was part of the plan from the beginning.

Most people do not know that he kicked off his political career in the home of unrepentant domestic terrorists and killers Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn. He hung around with radicals his whole life, in fact he admitted that he sought out radicals and marxists while in college. There is his relationship with anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, and of course the America hating Reverend Jeremiah Wright. No, Barack Obama is not what he seems.

But then Nick Cave drives the point home:

You’re one microscopic cog
in his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by
his red right hand

For all of Barack Obama’s policies have one goal in sight; to spread his European socialistic worldview into the disappearing land of a once free America. He is devaluing the dollar, extending the government’s reach into more and more of our daily lives, he is usurping the constitution, he has started a war in Libya as well as supported anti-Israeli uprisings in the middle east and it is all designed for we are but insignificant cogs in his catastrophic plan. And that plan is directed by his red right hand.

Barack Obama may be left-handed, but that only means he is hiding the other hand. He wants us to see what the left hand is doing, but it is the right one which is the one we should be watching. A master of deception with a view of America that is in opposition to the very constitution which the founders passed down to us.

Nick Cave isn’t for everybody, in fact I don’t know anyone else that likes his music. But here is a great live version of the song for anyone who is interested.

That song is quite meant for Obama. But it’s frightening what that man with a red right hand can do. He’s a good man on the outside but his heart is evil inside. Obama could possibly be a man with a red right hand from what he is doing to his country and to his countrymen. It’s also frightening what he can possibly lead the country to.

I agree with everything you said; Barack Obama has one outward appearance but another goal hidden inside and he must not be trusted. The “fundamental change” he hopes to bring to America is nothing more than European socialism. His brand of communism, or even fascism.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are brilliant! Sure, somewhat of an acquired taste, but well worth it.

How ridiculous. Obama’s policies are to the right of Reagan’s, to start, but what do facts matter? Nevermind. Whether you’re brainwashed or racist, I find it sad. If your tepid effort to paint Obama as the anti-Christ wasn’t so awful, it would be funny. Bitterly: Please practice “self-reliance” by doing some valid research.

How are Obama’s policies to the right of Reagan’s? He’s so blatantly a socialistic lefty.

I think the Red Right Hand is in general a template character that can be apply to many people, politicians especially, currently and historically. Obama is just one of them.
I love Nick Cave and I truly understand you problem, I know nobody else that likes, or even knows, his music.

Nick Cave told Q Magazine October 2007: “A good song has the ability to continue to reveal itself to you long after you’ve actually written it. This one’s pretty good (for that).” – From songfacts.com

I applaud your acceptance of that synchronistic moment, which led to listening to Nick Cave, after what you allude to as a long absence.

But more of the story goes back far far farther. There have been many lands that have seen this same process of a savior character.. of whom the people must beware.

I particularly like the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Ireland’s ever present war element as the basis for such work. But much like the words of Nostradamus, as we go along we can see the sign posts everywhere… it all comes down to the angle of one’s perception.

    Well done though.

Wow. You must have A LOT of extra time to come up with that. Where do you reckon Obama was when this song was first written?
