Weinergate: Anthony Weiner may have used government resources for phone sex

June 6, 2011

Up until now I have resisted writing about Anthony and his Weiner but I can resist it no longer as the double standard is glaring. Back in February of this year Republican Christopher Lee was forced to resign for–gasp–sending a topless picture of  himself to a woman via Craigslist. His fall from grace was quick and complete–we will never hear from Christopher Lee again.

Fast forward to Anthony Weiner; he did much the same as did Christopher Lee, but with many more women–and apparently took it much further–and today he admitted as much and yet there is no outcry for his resignation. But this scandal goes far beyond what Christopher Lee did as one of the women he was “involved” with is claiming that Weiner used his congressional office phone during business hours to engage in “steamy phone sex” with her several times.

If this is true then it is time for Anthony Weiner to resign, there is no way in hell that anyone can come to his defense if he was indeed using his congressional office phone to engage in these activities during work hours. And it would seem to me that the Democrats who so vociferously called for the resignation of Mark Foley for using his office to write lewd emails to his pages could not possibly condone this type of behavior from one of their own…..or could they? Christopher Lee and and Mark Foley found their “crimes” to be career ending, but with Anthony Weiner it is considered a private matter that we shouldn’t be concerned with. The duplicity and the double standard is on full display.

These charges need to be investigated; when the story first broke Anthony Weiner claimed his account was hacked, but he soon changed his story and claimed it was nothing but a prank, now he is admitting to some of the claims but denying others. He is claiming responsiblity for some of his actions, but we cannot be sure that he is telling the whole truth based on his first reaction to this story.

He is admitting to what he thinks he can get away with, while denying the more damning claims and the American people–and especially his constituents–deserve to know the truth and that will require an investigation into these new claims.

Update: It is now being reported that Nancy Pelosi is calling for an ethics probe into Anthony Weiner’s actions. It would appear as if this growing scandal is something that cannot be ignored. I do not think he can survive this, he must step down or risk further embarrassment and possibly charges being brought against him.

As I understand it, Weiner has admitted to everything – including what he denied last week. He claims he broke no laws, didn’t break his oath of office nor the Constitution, and wants to get back to the work of governance.

I have no idea what makes some people think they can pull off stunts like this and not be called to account for it. Larry Craig was another one – steadfastly refused to admit to what everyone knew. Craig and Weiner both are remarkable for being members of Congress who don’t seem to understand that a thing can be wrong even if it’s legal.

Don’t think for a moment that Weiner’s out of the woods. I doubt he’ll hang on to his seat for more than a month or so. I doubt the GOP will get his seat, but I also doubt that his replacement will be the effective voice in the House that Weiner was developing a reputation for being.

It’s not just politicians who think they’re above the laws of the nation and of decency, by the way – anyone who’s worked in the corporate world has likely bumped into a few of these clowns who are possibly super competent at their jobs, and so think they have some special entitlement to be a**holes.

Hope all’s well with everyone. Take good care and may God bless us all!

    TGY

PS Steve, thanks to you especially for your D-Day remarks. I wasn’t yet born at the time, but I remember my mom’s quivering voice when she told me, when I was 18 and protesting the war in Vietnam, that sometimes war was the only way to solve some problems, and Mr. Hitler and his henchpersons certainly fell into that category.

We simply do not know if he admitted to everything or not yet. He is denying he used his office to do any of this yet there is a woman out there who claims that he did, this should be easily verifiable and I think it needs to be looked into.
You are welcome, sometimes there is no alternative to war and WWII was one of those examples.

Good catch on Lee. Pelosi – reluctantly – is now saying an ethics hearing is needed – but Dems like Rangel and Dodd skate by for years untouched. This is yet another example.

She is calling for a hearing, but you make a great point; even if he is found guilty he will probably still hold onto his seat. We need to look no further than Rangel to understnad it takes a hell of alot to get a Democrat to resign.

Two standards. Since the left has no moral compass how do you hold them accountable? But if someone on the right had done the same what do you think would be the end result? Neither the press or his constituients will hold him to the same standard as a Republican or God forbid a Tea Party person. When do people wake up?
I agree if someone in my party did this I would ask them to step aside just as I would expect Weiner to do. But he will not. He knows how the game is played and now that he went to the podium and cried all is forgiven. But check out Pelosi jumping in at the last minute to ask for an investigation. Just to give the apperance that they are fair.

There is no doubt that there is a double standard and if Weiner were a Republican he would already be gone.

Weiner, Craig, Vitter, Clinton, Condit, Gingrich-and the list goes on. Once you’ve climbed that far up the ladder, the fall is substantial. They’ll lie, obfuscate, misdirect-anything to keep them from destroying years of carefully orchestrated career moves. Unfortunately, those tactics might work. Weiner may end up in a long line of lech’s that got caught doing what they do. Weiner’s career may have a big dent, but in all likelihood, it’s still driveable.

He is from a liberal district, this will probably be considered a badge of honor with his constituents.

You are the first one I have caught, that is focusing on the Phone Sex business. It amps it up to another level as far as I am concerned. His lies finish it. I have stayed away from the topic as well, but it was time.

This is an angle that I think is being under-reported. As if the lies weren’t bad enough, the fact that he was using his office phone during office hours should be enough to have him thrown out of office.

This definitely kicks it up to an entirely other level. Should this be proven true, there’ll be a Weiner under the bus.
