The United States is still flying hundreds of bombing missions in Libya

July 2, 2011

It has been Barack Obama’s contention that the role the United States is playing in the bombing of Libya is now so small it doesn’t constitute “hostilities” and therefore he doesn’t have to seek the authorization of the Congress to wage war on this sovereign nation. Barack Obama has claimed that the United States is now simply providing support for these bombing missions (which coincidentally just happen to be falling near Ghadaffi’s compound) and is not engaged–with the exception of some unmanned drone attacks–in the actual bombings.

Not so fast, says this article in the Air Force Times:

Air Force and Navy aircraft are still flying hundreds of strike missions over Libya despite the Obama administration’s claim that American forces are playing only a limited support role in the NATO operation.

U.S. aircraft continue to fly support [ISR and refueling] missions, as well as strike sorties under NATO tasking,” AFRICOM spokeswoman Nicole Dalrymple said in an emailed statement.

The article goes on to say that since the end of March the United States has flown over 800 strike sorties, and that of those 132 have dropped bombs on Libya. It is interesting to note that these are the numbers since the United States relinquished the lead and turned over operation control to NATO to assume a “support” role.

While these numbers are not staggering for a war which has now dragged out almost four months, it does show a certain mischaracterization of the war effort in the way our role is being portrayed to the general public. “Supporting” our allies in this mission consists of more “hostilities” than the Obama regime is willing to admit to the American people.

As the war, which was supposed to “last days, not weeks,” enters its fourth month with no end in sight and no clear goal in mind we still do not understand why Barack Obama engaged the United States in this war and we deserve to know what we are doing over there. We do know that Barack Obama’s stated goal is not the true reason we are there or the United States would also be in Yemen, Syria, and the Ivory Coast. Barack Obama is not willing to admit to his base that the United States is still quite active in Libya, nevermind trying to explain his reversal of a position he held during the campaign about intervening in another country’s civil war. He is hoping that if he downplays the war effort, or ignores it completely, that it will fade from the minds of the public.

Move along, nothing to see here.

I have to agree with Fred. Our men and women are better than that.

Also, I wonder what would have happened if a POTUS with an (R) after his name had done this?

    I know, rhetorical question.

I think we all know what would happen if Bush had done this and then refused to seek permission from the Congress.

But didn’t Obama tell us it’s not really a war?
