Media Matters calls America’s Watchtower a pro-militia website

July 29, 2011

This was an interesting week “behind the scenes” here at America’s Watchtower: First, America’s Watchtower was linked in a post which was cross posted on Noisy Room, Trevor Loudon, and Gulag Bound; this brought in some extra and always welcome traffic. But later in the week, as I was checking out my referrers, I noticed a few hits coming from Media Matters so naturally I had to check it out. Why would America’s Watchtower be linked at Media Matters?

Imagine my surprise when I learned in this post that America’s Watchtower (not specifically mentioned by name, but right there in the link) was a pro-militia website, because that is not how I would ever characterize this blog. Pro-military? Yes, as one can tell by my sidebar images; two of these images are meant as a tribute to all of those who serve or have served in the military and also those that have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we may remain free, while the other images are of two WWII heroes. Pro-second amendment? Absolutely.

But when left wingers use the word “militia” it usually does not mean the same thing as it does when the term is used in the Constitution. When a website like Media Matters refers to a person or a website as being “pro-militia” what they are actually saying is that person is an anti-government right wing extremist who supports the violent overthrow of the federal government, and is actively preparing for that endgame; and while I will oppose the Obama regime with every ounce of my being, I have never–and will never–advocate violence to achieve this goal because I still believe in the system and I still believe in the American people. I seek a revolution at the ballot box, not on the battlefield.

I suppose the image of the Gadsden flag flying in my sidebar helps to promote the image of America’s Watchtower that Media Matters so desperately wanted to see, but Media Matters is a website which describes themselves thusly:

Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media

And the post in which they linked to this blog was entitled “Fox Fails To Fact Check Operation Castaway” so the irony in the fact that Media Matters didn’t even bother to check out this blog before they falsely made the claim that America’s Watchtower was a “pro-militia” website is not lost on this author. They based their idea of what this blog was about on a few images and not on the content of America’s Watchtower.

Perhaps Media Matters could benefit from a little fact checking of their own before they make an attempt to mischaracterize the content of another blogger in the future.

Nothing like the libs casting aspersions and spreading misinformation and falsehoods around. You should be honored though, to get all this attention as @stinkprogress noted above. The Left usually is doing what they accuse others of doing.

They’re gearing up the troops for the final assault in 2012. Every conservative outlet will be monitored, attacked and defamed. We should remember how this works from last time. It will be more intense this time around. Soros has stepped down from his “job” to personally manage the process.

Interesting how a group that claims to seek the truth in the media didn’t bother to look at the content of this site before jumping to conclusions.

That stinks. It smacks of libel. You are now probably on some DHS watch list. I don’t suppose complaining will do any good. The above comment is correct in saying that you must be doing something right to have gotten their attention. Keep doing what you know is right, my friend.

“…dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.” NOT dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting misinformation in the U.S. media, ONLY conservative media. That in and of itself should make them ashamed of their bias and intentions, since doing that for ALL media would be a worthy cause. And now we have proof that don’t have a clue of what they’re talking about, and don’t even read the content of what they are commenting on. Pathetic.

Exactly! They are only interested in correcting the media when it suits their purpose, if the lie benefits the left the end justifies the means.

So you’re surprised by this purveyor of misinformation? They are the modern equivalent of the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. True to Goebbels form. Better get ready for that midnight visit from the Geheime Staatspolizei.

any REAL militias aren’t advocating for violent overthrow. the ones that are are posers who probably shouldn’t be trusted wit ha sharp stick.

many militia guys are ex-military of some kind. they’ve seen “violent overthrow” close up and know exactly what it means, and who it hurts…that would be EVERYONE. they don’t want it.

they’re mostly of the “don’t do this. don’t cross that line. don’t make us have to do this. don’t back us up to that wall and give us no other options” crowd.

I’ve been advocating for “community defense” as the place the militias SHOULD have gone for a long time. somewhere about 1998 or so many of them went political-conspiracy-theory nuts and didn’t come back. a shame really, if you think of what they could have become. imagine being able to just close FEMA altogether, because the locals already have whatever disaster handled long before some desk jockey can get out of bed.

then take that “we don’t need your help, thanks” and slowly extend it to other parts of government intrusion.

it could have been a beautiful thing. perhaps it still can. at least I can hope

Hi Allen, I hope you understand that I was not casting aspersions on militia groups; I was simply pointing out the way the left sees them while pointing out the error Media Matters made by characterizing this blog as a militia website.
Thanks for stopping by neighbah, hope to see you around.

ohh no worries..we know that the “media matters” types are the same stripe as the Southern Poverty Law Center and other progressive organizations. they all use the same set of Alinsky’s rules.

if you disagree with ANYTHING big-government types do you are an “insurrectionist wacko racist sexist homophobe member of the KKK, the Nazi party”, ect ect ect…and they shout it long and loud and make sure it’s over anything you could possibly say otherwise.

well, good thing those tactics aren’t working that well any more, right?

Well, Steve, seems you’re taking a little heat off of Oath Keepers. Media Matters shouldn’t be a 501 c 3. No more than ACORN or CPUSA. A collection of malcontents who advocate fascist government and take money from a former nazi collaborator. These are the type of people who haven’t yet come to terms with their mental illnesses and, subsequently, call everyone else around them “crazy” and “extreme”. Well, if advocating the rule of law and defending the Constitution is extreme, call us guilty. They are the types who call for violent revolution and turn around and call liberty loving citizens “fringe” and “domestic terrorists”. I should thank them. They’ve caused me to become engaged in the process and more resolute than ever. When critters like these call you their enemy, you know you’re on the right path.

The interesting think is, as you alluded to, that if you believe in the Constitution the left believes you are a radical. How did this happen?

They control the language with talking points uttered over and over again. They use labels and names to demonize the opposition. Take the term “liberal” for instance. Most of the founders were classical “liberals”. Using the true definition of the word would mean one believed in limited government and personal choice. Liberal amounts of liberty so to speak. The self described “liberals” of today believe in top down, overbearing govt controlling everyone’s choice and behaviors. The word “progressive” has been twisted as well. Who’s against “progress”? Make one sound like a bad guy if you don’t agree with them. When you break down their ideology, one finds it actually to be “regressive”. Take energy policy, for instance.
Mean while, we’re all “tea baggers, fringe, extreme, far right wing, domestic terrorists, knuckle draggers, global warming DENIERS”. You get the idea.

But I guess Obama’s planned private WH milita would have been cool… but someone like you paying tribute to our nation’s greatest heroes and defenders of freedom is a militant kook now?

Sometimes I wonder who out there is even stupid enough to buy into the ‘progressive’ narrative re. their patriotic -and peaceful- opposition… there’s nothing they won’t twist to stay in power

Feel free to be outraged for me because I am not outraged, in fact I kind of liked it. This is more of an example of the media’s ignoring this story than anything else. If the media covered it the way it should be covered when Media Matters googled the story I doubt I would have been anywhere near the top.
