Harry Reid’s debt ceiling plan appears dead; do the Democrats want the United States to default?

July 30, 2011

A fierce battle of chicken is now underway in the Congress over the debt ceiling; this battle is taking place between establishment  House Republicans and the Tea Party, Republicans in the House and Democrats in the Senate, and between warring factions of Democrats in the Senate. But to listen to Barack Obama you would be led to believe that the sole party responsible for this stalemate is House Republicans, with no blame laid at the feet of Senate Democrats who are unwilling to bend to the demands of the House Republicans.

It is being reported that Harry Reid’s debt ceiling legislation is dead; 43 House Republicans sent Harry Reid a letter which all but affirmed his plan would be DOA once it got to the House for a vote, and Harry Reid is struggling to get the 60 votes he needs to move the bill forward in the Senate.

But to listen to Barack Obama you wouldn’t even know that Harry Reid doesn’t have the votes in the Senate to move this bill forward for he blames House Republicans for “wasting days” trying to solve the debt ceiling problem by writing legislation the Senate wouldn’t approve. Barack Obama seems to have forgotten that while the Senate has been dithering with a bill that had no chance of passing the House that the House in fact did pass two bills in an attempt to avert this crisis.

The House passed their latest bill last night, but it was quickly defeated in the Senate, and the House also passed a bill over a week ago which the Senate Democrats tabled, effectively killing the bill without ever bringing it to the floor for a debate. So I ask Dear Leader this; how can you blame the House for “wasting days” during this debate when the quickest way to “compromise” to avoid default would have been for the Senate to bring cut, cap, and balance to the floor a week ago and begin the process of reconciliation then? Days have been wasted because the Senate leadership wanted no part in a bipartisan approach toward reconciling the cut, cap, and balance bill.

This leads me to ask the question; do the Democrats want the United States to default? The Democrats feel that if the United States defaults the Republicans will be blamed for it, and they have gone out of their way to ensure that any measure passed by Republicans was killed without any chance at a bipartisan effort to pass compromise legislation and it is beginning to look as if this is being done for the purely political reason of pinning this failure on the Republicans.

But I believe the true target isn’t the Republicans in general because if this were left up to the establishment Republicans a bill would have already been passed; the establishment Republicans would have already caved into Democrat demands, the Democrats are targeting the Tea Party. In other words; the Democrats are not targeting the Republicans, they are targeting the conservatives.

And this attack has been successful in eroding Tea Party support in the so-called conservative media; political pundits such as Bill O’Reilly and Laura Ingraham have begin to turn against the Tea Party, claiming that it is time for the Tea Party to back down and take whatever deal they can get. So it goes without saying that the Democrats feel as if the ordinary American conservatives will fall in line and give in if the pundits begin to tell us it is time to do so.

The Tea Party has come into its own during this debate; once we were laughed at and scorned by the media and by the Democrats, but then came the election of 2010 and many Tea Party candidates won seats in the House. But still nobody took them serious because they thought that when push came to shove they would cave in much the same manner as we have been accustomed to seeing with establishment Republicans. The Democrats laughed at us–calling us teabaggers–when the Tea Party started, but suddenly we were able to gain a voice in the House and the Democrats weren’t laughing as loudly any more. When was the last time you heard anyone call us teabaggers?

But still they didn’t take the Tea Party seriously until the debt ceiling debate ensued and now the Democrats fear the Tea Party. The Tea Party has controlled the debt ceiling debate and at long last the Democrats realize that this is a legitimate movement which could strip them of power in 2012. They are now only interested in stopping the momentum the Tea Party has gained in the last year because they are afraid of the elections–Senatorial and presidential–next year.

Instead of working with the Tea Party–which was elected by the people in a shellacking–in order to solve the debt ceiling problem it looks as if the Democrats are more interested in letting the United States default so that they can blame the Tea Party and marginalize them heading into the 2012 elections.

The Democrats are more interested in holding on to power than they are interested in solving the debt crisis–if given a choice between compromising with the Tea Party for the good of the country or defaulting on our debt in an attempt to blame the Tea Party for this debacle, they will choose defaulting over doing what is right every single time because we all know that the end justifies the means.

I may have said this before but I think the best thing Boehner could do now is withdraw his last bill and resubmit the cut, cap and balance bill. Then the Republicans should sit back and fold their arms and say we’ve done our job. Now its your turn. Period.

I agree, put the ball back in the Senate’s court and let them be the ones who wind up killing the bill. The Republicans have done their jobs, now let the Senate step up and do something.

Is there any reason we are not already up in arms? Are we that damned gutless now?

WHY? Why did Laura Ingram, and Reilly (though he’s not a shock) turn on the t-Party. THAT was very harmful to people who are doing what is right!

I am not surprised by Bill O’Reilly, but I did begin to listen to Laura Ingraham’s explaination and she does have a point, but this should show us all that the Democrats have no intention of compromising with us. So now is the time to dig in our heals and let the chips fall where they may.

The only people with a plan/plans are Conservatives, yet they are the ones getting hammered over not compromising. More obama circular logic – damned if they do, damned if they don’t. The House has been doing their job while the Senate, under the ‘leadership’ of Harry ‘Cowboy Poet’ Reid, is stonewalling. And now Zero, threatening vetoes, is holding closed door meetings, supposedly losing sleep, and making ‘secret’ plans. More transparency.

The problem is that the Republicans don’t seem to get out there and tell their side of the story. They are letting the Democrats control the message and it is frustrating.

Let the default happen! Who looses? China! As far as the “Debate”! We need a BBA and a Flat Tax! No one escapes taxes. No one! Does anyone remember the tax “Rebates” under Bush? when the “Poor” ,who didn’t pay any taxes, didn’t get a rebate the Democrats started using the race card. Those who didn’t get the :Rebate” all of a sudden had a check coming? Where did the deficit come from?

Bill Clinton? Short term Bonds to finance the debt? Short term high dividend! Guess who bought? Ultra Sparc III Work Stations to Chinese Colleges (Govt.) for a paralleled array, to put a Chinese “Astronaut” in space? If you put a capsule on the ground at a specific site guess what else you can put there?

The bonds came due at the end of Bush’s second term. The Chinese now have the capability to put MIRV’s on the NA Continent.

G.E., in the partnership with a state-owned Chinese company, will be sharing its most sophisticated airplane electronics, including some of the same technology used in Boeing’s new state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner.

For G.E., the pact is a chance to build upon an already well-established business in China, where the company has booming sales of jet engines, mainly to Chinese airlines that are now buying Boeing and Airbus planes. But doing business in China often requires Western multinationals like G.E. to share technology and trade secrets

Very true, you can’t get a rebate if you didn’t pay in the first place. At that point it wouldn’t be a rebate but rather welfare.

The whole thing’s ridiculous – why the GOP insists on the right to attach conditions to the administration paying bills — bills incurred when the Congress enacted spending legislation — when they come due is beyond me.

Maybe we wouldn’t be in this situation of Obama and the Democrats passed a budget in the first place.

I doubt it – this isn’t a budget matter, it’s a matter of coming up with the money to meet obligations already incurred.

We hear so often that government should be run like a business – what business runs this way? The ability to pay the bills incurred by Congress is being held hostage, by elements in Congress.

If this artificial number isn’t increased, every penny of every cost increase incurred by every American is going to be blamed on the T Party and the GOP by the Dems, and they’re going to hammer away at it unttil the election and beyond.

Take good care and may God bless us all!

Remember, Tom Coburn had his own plan in the senate that was never even discussed. That’s three Republican plans.

    Awsome,
Its the TeaParty that should be out there front and center and the establishment repubes should shut up and get out of the way! They are the problem!
Lets never forget what the rhinos did to their own ,and primary every single one of them. That means the entire leadership of the party.

Reid and company are most concerned about the upcoming 2012 election and what can they do to blame the Tea Party and Republicans for the economy. The government is not going to default on any debt payments. Any choice to not pay benefits promised to Americans will be Obama’s. But that is a moot point for now. A supposed agreement has been reached. And we are again screwed. Only 20 billion in the first year the rest are just smoke and mirrors. You can bet the spending spree will continue.

We all know that may cuts supposedly made over the next ten years are not going to occur, and we are turning this over to a committee. We already had the CBO report which showed billions in wasteful spending and this was ignored by everyone, why are we to believe they will listen this time?
