Democrats hold disaster relief funds hostage in order to save funding for electric cars

September 4, 2011

During the debate on the debt ceiling the Democrats continually accused the Republicans of holding Social Security and Medicare checks hostage, even though this was a lie and the money would have been there regardless of whether or not the debt ceiling was raised. This was a blatant attempt to pressure the Republicans by scaring the senior citizens, and now it appears as if the Democrats are up to similar dirty tricks when it comes to Hurricane Irene disaster relief funds.

Here is what Democracy for America had to say:

We’re hitting Eric Cantor hard—exposing his call to hold Hurricane Irene disaster relief hostage to more cuts in vital programs, like Medicare and Social Security—with in-district ads all next week

According to this Wall Street Journal article, it isn’t the House Republicans who are holding the disaster relief fund hostage at all but rather the Senate Democrats who are playing games with the disaster relief funds.

This week the left-wing press has been attacking House Majority Leader Eric Cantor for holding disaster relief funding “hostage.” A more accurate way to put this is that Senate Democrats won’t approve new funding for disasters unless they get the funding they want for corporations that make electric cars.

The Republicans want to cut the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, a program which costs $500 billion and is designed to help companies build luxury electric vehicles, and yet the Democrats are purposely misrepresenting this as a vital program akin to Social Security and Medicare when clearly this is not the case.

It appears as if Senate Democrats are holding their political ideology up as a higher priority than helping those most affected by the hurricane. They see this as a “crisis” that they can take advantage of; the Democrats feel as if they can pressure the Republicans into funding a program using the disaster relief funds as a bargaining chip to save a program which will probably be in the crosshairs of the “Super” Committee anyway. This would be a way for the Democrats to secure this program by making it off limits to the “Super” Committee, and while all of this is going on people are still waiting for relief.

They never stop playing the game, do they? They’ll twist the truth any way but loose. Shame is not part of their vocabulary.
