Allen West defends Newt Gingrich’s “food stamp president” comment

January 23, 2012

As regular readers of America’s Watchtower already know, I am not fan of Newt Gingrich and I do not wish to see him win the Republican nomination. However he has been under attack as being a racist and using racial code to win support of the Tea Party in South Carolina for calling Barack Obama the “food stamp president” and because these attacks are unjustified I am now compelled to defend him.

I cannot possibly defend him as well as Allen West did, so I will let his words do my dirty work. As can be read here, Allen West came to Newt Gingrich’s defense today:

There is no race code.  It’s a fact. Since President Obama has been in the Oval Office, you’ve  seen a 41 percent increase in the food stamp recipients in the United  States of America.  We have a president that’s making more American victims rather than victors.

  He continued:

We also have a 16  percent increase in Americans on the poverty roll — 6.4 million more  Americans are on poverty since President Obama took office.

While the left has portrayed Newt Gingrich’s statement as racist because the left associates food stamps with black Americans nothing could be further from the truth, in fact it turns out that more white Americans are on food stamps under the Obama regime than are minorities, and more Americans are now in poverty because of Barack Obama’s policies. Yet that did not stop people such as Jim Clyburn from claiming that Newt Gingrich was using racial code to gain support in South Carolina.

This did not sit well with Allen West:

“If there are people such as Rep. Clyburn that don’t want to face up to the  truth then that’s on them and I think it’s absolutely reprehensible that they  feel that the only thing they can fall back on is try to create some type of  racial division which we know that the Democrats are already trying to create  some type of class warfare division as well,” he said.”

West added, “We don’t need these gimmicks that the Democrats and people like Clyburn and also I heard Al  Sharpton made some very ugly remarks, we don’t need that

This is all the left has left; they cannot defend Barack Obama’s failed policies so they attack the people who oppose Barack Obama in an attempt to  delegitimize his opponents, and we can expect the attacks to continue as the Democrats get more desperate to hold onto power. This is going to be one of the ugliest and dirtiest campaigns in United States history, and it hasn’t really even started yet.

The left will try to push Americans apart and divide us on issues based on race and class warfare and we know the Democrats will be up to the task, the only question is; will the Republicans have the courage to stand up and fight back against this vile and vicious attack? If they are not, the race is already lost.

Isn’t it more racist to somehow only associate food stamps with blacks?

This is stale tactic the left has overused in my opinion. People are starting to see through this. My mother always told me that more times than not those who cry racism usually have a bit of a racist streak.

I agree John, I think people are tired of this line of attack and are not buying it amy more. The more people like Clyburn throw these accusations out there based on smaller and smaller “evidence” of racism the more people are beginning to see how desperate they are becoming.

John, our CBC is a good example of that.

The Dems have to gin up the base. Terrifying the recipients that they might lose any chunk of their benefits ought to do the trick to get them fired up.

Exactly! Barack Obama and the Democrats are going to use the politics of fear in the hope of defeating the Republicans and we must not allow them to write the narrative which we are to follow.

But what clout, if any does the racist bigot Al Sharpton have? He incites racism for him to keep his job, whatever “job” he has, that is.

If it weren’t for his illegitimate cries of racism Al Sharpton wouldn’t have any money whatsoever. He has gained by playing to the fears of black Americans and I think it is disgraceful.

Jim, Al and Jesse have cashed in on “racism” over the years, they always surface when that word comes out. I think they have lost alot of their being looked up to when they bring the race card out. People are getting sick if it, as it should be. I change channels if they are being interviewed, I know what vile comments will come out. I wish someone would be honest and tell them that they are “has beens” and they should do a career change.

Somehow, I can see West as VP with Gingrich, and I see it as a good thing, as well as a WINNING ticket…

I haven’t made up my mind as to whether or not I can support either Romney or Gingrich if they are the nominee, but if West is on the ticket sign me up!

An interesting example of either ignorant or dishonest arguing. “Since President Obama has been in the Oval Office, you’ve seen a 41 percent increase in the food stamp recipients in the United States of America. We have a president that’s making more American victims rather than victors.” Obama became president in January 2009. The current WORLD economic crisis began before that, and responsibility has to be shared by a new of previous presidents. Now this does not mean that Obama has handled it well, or that he isn’t responsible for some of the increase in food stamps. But the argument, as presented, is deeply flawed. It is up to readers to decide if this is done through economic ignorance, which is at least partially forgiveable, or from a deliberate desire to distort the truth. Or as a third option, whether this is a forgiveable hyperbole.

Steve, just don’t jump on the ticket like so many did when they said “I didn’t vote for McCain, I voted for Palin..”

THAT was the most stupid thing I ever heard.

A very good point Fred. I am getting so depserate for something good coming from this race that I am grasping at straws at this point. It is a sad state of affairs.

Yeah. Far better, when the economy tanked after eight years of shortsighted economic policies designed to benefit only those who least needed help, to have left the victims of the crash without resort to their next meal. Better to have had millions of people homeless and hungry, standing in breadlines for a meal, and going to stand for eight hours on a dinner line once breakfast is done . . .

Unfortunately for the mean-spirited among us, a government program was in place to help those people put food on their tables, and perhaps keep a sense of stability in their lives as the economy shuffles out. And so candidate Gingrich, once again putting the lie to the idea of “compassionate conservatism,” mocks the President under whom those millions of Americans escaped absolute destitution.

There are real Christians in the GOP, and I’m sure that some of Gingrich’s remarks turn their stomachs.

Take good care and may God bless us all!
