Gunrunner: Is Darrell Issa moving forward with Contempt charges against Eric Holder?

February 14, 2012

I have to admit I was pretty disheartened when I read the news last week that Darrell Issa had given Eric Holder an indefinite extension to comply with his subpoena on Operation Fast and Furious because it sounded like the fix was in and was not going to be held accountable in the deadly scandal.

But then earlier today Darrell Issa sent this letter to Eric Holder which the Daily Caller describes as a “major step toward holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress” and needless to say my spirits were lifted. I have read the letter and I have to say I don’t see anything in it which I would consider a major step towards holding Eric Holder in contempt, apparently the Daily Caller is referring to this line in the letter:

We cannot wait any longer for the Department’s cooperation. As such, please specify a date by which you expect the Department to produce  all documents responsive to the subpoena. In addition, please specify a  Department representative who will interface with the Committee for production  purposes. This individual should also serve as the conduit for dealing  with the contempt proceedings, should the Department continue to ignore the  Committee’s subpoena.

I suppose Darrell Issa’s suggestion that the “Justice” Department name an individual to deal with the contempt proceedings is an indication that Darrell Issa does intend to move forward with contempt charges, but he still hasn’t given Eric Holder a new date for compliance. The letter is an indication, however, that Darrell Issa isn’t going to stop this investigation anytime soon so maybe the rumored deal struck between John Boehner and the “Justice” Department is just that–a rumor.

Darrell Issa also laughed at the notion that his Oversight Committee was playing politics in an election year by reminding the “Justice” Department that if it had cooperated with his investigation in the first place the investigation wouldn’t have been dragged into an election year.

It is ironic that while the Department’s delay tactics have extended this  investigation into a presidential election year, you have had the audacity to  characterize it as an attempt at ‘headline-grabbing Washington ‘gotcha’ games  and cynical political point scoring
Had the Department demonstrated willingness to cooperate with this investigation  from the outset — instead of attempting to cover up its own internal  mismanagement — this investigation likely would have concluded well before the  end of 2011. In reality, it is the Department that is playing political gotcha  games, instead of allowing a co-equal branch of government to perform its  constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch

But now we are in an election year and maybe Darrell Issa has decided to let Eric Holder take his time before filing contempt charges to turn this into a campaign issue, and who can blame him? Eric Holder decided to stonewall this investigation from the get go, perhaps Darrell Issa is turning the tables on Eric Holder and has decided to play the same game.

It was Eric Holder’s indignation and arrogance which led him to believe he was beyond reproach in the first place, and which has delayed the process for a full year and thrust this controversy into an election year, and it could be these two traits which end up bringing him down right before the election.

Its about time. These creatures have been getting away with ethical if not criminal behavior since their plague descended on the White House. Let’s hope that Holder’s teflon coating has worn thin enough to hold him accountable….WM

It sure is about time, I am growing very impatient at how long this has been taking.

If we do get to where we want to go, it will be Issa, and only him. Too bad more cannot get on board with this. But it is the same thing with this Contraception nonsense. Instead of making an issue of Liberty v government control, nothing from the leadership that I hear. No making hay while the sun shines.

Issa and Grassley are practically alone in this, they don’t seem to be getting much help from the leadership of the party. Where are all the Republicans in leaderhsip standing up and demanding Eric Holder’s resignation?

Well, if Holder wants to face contempt charges in October, so be it.

I don’t think that is what he wanted, but that might be just what he gets and he will have nobody to blame but himself. He was a little too cute for his own good.

I must say Steve, I have been deeply disturbed by how the Republicans have been handling a number of issues in DC these days. From the payroll tax cut, to not doing a dang thing about Obama’s recess appointments, and now dragging their feet with Holder. I personally believe that charges should have been brought up on Holder last year, instead they kept waiting for the DOJ to turn over documents. I know this is an election year, but how the Republicans are handling themselves on important matters and the lack of leadership the are displaying could cost us not only the Presidency…but the House. It’s shameful to see how they’re playing politics.

I am just as upset as you are at this point in time. The Republicans have dropped the ball on many issues and I fear the presidency is already lost. I also fear they are in danger of losing the House and that would be a disaster. This should have been a year where Republicans made more huge gains and they blew it.

John – I agree with you. It’s a mystery why so many Republicans are so passive in response to Obama’s excesses. If they are that scared of the Democrats then they should pack up and get out and let more Tea Party minded representatives take their place. Their inaction is a betrayal of those who elected them….WM

I don’t understand why the Republicans don’t stand up to him either, they try at times but they always give in and I think they are going to pay dearly for it in November. The primaries show us that the voters are not energized and this is a very bad sign.

John and William, some of the people that we have elected are NOT doing what we elected them for. Does this administration have something on each of those that are turning away from the issues? Or, are they being bought and paid for by the powers that be? Whatever it is, they are not acting in our best interest. At this point, I think you could pull a warm body off the street that could do that job they are doing and they would be damn glad to get the paychecks we are paying them. We need to remember that when we go to vote, don’t we?

I’m not sure Obama has anything on them, I think it is more likely they have been bought and paid for.

Lou – You bring up an Interesting point. I have had that thought before and considering so many in D.C. are corrupt,( both parties), there is no reason not to think that either “blackmail” or possibly promise of ‘reward’ is responsible in part for their omission of their responsibilities to protect the public from those that would harm us….WM

William, I believe there is blame on both sides of the aisle. There is very little “voting along partyline” with the Republicans. There are alot that call themselves Republicans, but don’t vote that way. I at least give the Democrats credit that they stick to their party votes, much more often. I don’t think that “protecting the public from harm” is top most on alot of their minds. I don’t think it takes anyone with extreme intelligence to know what is right from wrong, so it doesn’t matter if they are attorneys or doctors, etc. I would just like someone in there that has morals, ethics and values, but those virtues seem to be lacking in a vast majority of what we have voted in. I think that once they get in there, they take it upon themselves to do as they see fit, not what We The People have put them there for. So, blackmail or reward put aside, it doesn’t matter, they were put there for a reason and if they can’t follow thru with their promises, then they need to be taken out of office. We have a mess to clean up and now is as good a time as any to start cleaning. I am fed up to here (lou has her hand at her throat) with excuses for what is going on, it isn’t working and we need to clean house!!!!

What can they actually do with a Democratic Senate. I’m hoping they will take the Senate also, and then the Republicans can vote together to get rid of all the mess. As it is, the senate can cry foul, but then the media makes it look like a partisian witchunt and the Senate will do nothing. Look at the fellow demonrats on the hearings with Issa. They are publicly decrying Issa saying it is a political witchhunt and that Holder and this administration did nothing wrong. Heck it was only a white guy in their minds that died, not a person other than the caucasian race. We need to vote in a president that will not back down from prosecuting obummer and holder and …. and will NOT pardon them either!! I think that is also why no charges of treason have been spoken, it can’t go anywhere.

I am not optimistic about the Republicans gaining the Senate, in fact I think they may very well lose the House and the presidency as well.

Wasn’t it just last week that we saw emailed newsletters saying that Boehner tied Issa’s hands on this. I hope he really does go ahead and pushes this all the way to Holder’s furture jail cell and then some.

There was a rumor that Boehner struck a deal with the “Justice” Department but he is denying it so I guess we will have to play the waiting game.
