Barack Obama’s “evolution” on gay marriage

May 9, 2012

I don’t intend to spend much time on this issue because I believe this was a premeditated effort at creating a diversion from the important issues which started with Joe Biden over the weekend and continued today with Barack Obama’s announcement that he has “evolved” into supporting gay marriage. But this is the big news of the day so I am going to write one quick post about it and then drop it and move on.

I believe I have been fairly hard on Mitt Romney for his lack of core political beliefs; the man is a flip flopper who has taken differing sides on many issues when he felt it would benefit him politically and that is precisely what Barack Obama did today. Barack Obama did not “evolve” in the sense the media would have you believe, he flip flopped on the issue of gay marriage and this isn’t the first time he has done so. Here is a brief history of Barack Obama’s various positions on gay marriage:

Running for the Illinois state senate from a trendy area of Chicago in 1996, he was for gay marriage. “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages,” he wrote in answer to a questionnaire back then. In 2004, he was running for the U.S. Senate and needed to appeal to voters statewide. So he evolved, and favored civil unions but opposed homosexual “marriage.” In 2008, running for president, he said, “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage.” Now in 2012, facing a tough reelection campaign where he needs energized supporters of gay “marriage” and has disappointed them with his refusal to give them his support, he is for it

It is clear that Barack Obama did not have an evolution, and in fact he made a calculated political move designed to drum up support with the far left and as we can see above this isn’t the first time he has done so on this issue. It is interesting to note how the Democrats and the media label Mitt Romney a flip flopper (rightfully so, by the way) yet portray Barack Obama as having evolved. It sounds so much nicer but the end result is the same.

While the media is hailing this “evolution” as a great victory for the gay community Barack Obama claims this is an issue which should be left up to the states (and I actually agree with him on this) so what has really changed other than the perception in the minds of many voters? It seems as if he is still playing both sides of the fence.

I think the nature of people on both sides is this: if you change your opinion from something I disagree with to something I agree with, then you’ve evolved. If you change your opinion from something I agree with to something I disagree with, you’re a flip-flopper.

I would agree with that and I think the media has shown which side they are on with their portrayal of Obama’s “evolution.”

If by the media you mean the media that leans left, then yes. The media that leans right is obviously on the other side.

Everything is about him. He, otherwise, could care less about anybody else. Until November 6, it is all about how many votes he can pick up.

You are right about that Jim, but I think Obama and the Democrats overestimate the power of the gay lobby. I think this will hurt him more than it will help him, but he is losing his base and he had to throw them a bone. Hence his “evolution.”

Kind of hypocritical how the media always says Democrats ONLY “misspeak” or “evolve” but Republicans ALWAYS lie and flip-flop.

It must be nice to have almost the entire media on your side, but Republicans will never know how that feels.
