The New York Times follows Los Angeles Times lead, runs hit piece on Ann Romney for riding horses

May 28, 2012

Last week the Los Angeles Times wrote what could be described as a semi-sympathetic hit piece on Ann Romney. The piece mentioned the relief that Ann Romney found in the sport of dressing from her debilitating disease, while also mentioning just how expensive the sport can be. The intent was simple: paint the Romney’s as out of touch 1%er elitists while keeping up the appearance of being fair and sympathetic towards her illness.

This also set the stage for a more hard hitting and less sympathetic piece because once the story was out there it could be advanced, and with each advance in the story the focus could begin to shift away from Ann Romney’s disease and toward the price of her hobby. Yesterday the New York Times obliged, running what amounts to the same story with much less sympathy towards Ann Romney with its story entitled, “In Rarefied Sport, a View of the Romneys’ World.” The title says it all, and is close enough to the title of the original article written in the Los Angeles Times (Romney and dressage: A private pricey world) to make it clear exactly what the intent was of these two articles.

The piece mentions Ann Romney’s disease and therapy a couple of times in passing before getting to the crux of the matter; the Romney’s are rich and out of touch with ordinary Americans. The article comes complete with a mention of Mitt Romney’s “couple of Cadillacs” and plans to build a car elevator in their $9 million beach home, but the focus is on Ann Romney and the costs associated with her hobby.

First we have a paper on the left coast advancing this story and then we have one on the right coast run with it less than one week later. Two different papers in two different regions but with the same goal; toxify Mitt Romney even at the expense of his wife and spread the word to as many people as possible. I thought Barack Obama said families were not fair game? The media has taken the president’s advice when it comes to Michelle Obama and her $2,000 dresses and $1,000 skirts but they have not afforded Ann Romney the same luxury.

So I, too, must be out of touch with working americans, as I am a high falootin horse owner. (insert HUGE eye roll here). I groom dogs for a living.

Sheesh, what these people won’t do to try to advance their agenda, how repulsive

Yep, you are out of touch according to the media. They will do anything to advance the agenda even if that means attacking a candidate’s spouse.

As I read this piece, and the previous one about the Mrs. Romney, visions of John Kerry windsurfing kept popping into my mind, as well as an endless parade of articles exploring and detailing his wife’s wealth. You’re right, once the GOP candidate locks down the nomination, the MSM goes after him and his family mercilessly.

Eh? Whazzat? John Kerry is a Democrat?

A candidate’s ability to relate to the people he or she aspires to lead IS a legitimate topic of inquiry during the campaign season. I remember when the first President Bush visited a grocery store in Kennebunkport and expressed amazement at the scanners that read the barcode on each item – at a time when those scanners had been in fairly common use nationwide for a few years. It told us all that the President really had no idea what average Americans go through every day.

Citizens have a right to know how a candidate experiences the economy. I doubt if Mitt Romney has ever gotten to the checkout lane at the grocery store and had to decide what items to put back on the shelf because he couldn’t afford everything, or delayed paying the electric bill so he could get the mortgage payment in on time. I have no doubt that candidate Obama, with experience as a community organizer in the streets of Chicago, had a far greater understanding of the lives of ordinary Americans than did his opponent, a man for whom I have a great deal of respect and awe for his personal history.

I’m glad that Mrs. Romney has found a way to fight the terrible disease she has, which was visited upon her for reasons beyond our comprehension. I hope, though, that the candidate doesn’t expect that others with that dreadful condition are able to follow the same course.

Take good care, and may God bless us all!

Good points TGY and believe me I am not trying to claim that Romney isn’t an elitist, I just don’t evny his wealth. The big difference in my mind here is that while the windsurfing Kerry did help to portray him as an elitist, nobody tried to claim the Bush’s weren’t part of the elite ruling class, whereas Obama is trying to portray himself as a man of the people, and while he might not have come from money it is a little disingenuous on his part to claim he not an elitist when his wife can afford $2,ooo dresses.

Good to see you here TGY, have not seen you posting lately! As for Mrs. Romney, they should leave her alone, as they should the children. Think we can do away with this group of journalists and start over?

TGY hasn’t been commenting as much lately. I like to think it is because it is getting harder to defend Obama :), but he probably is busy in real life.

It’s all part of the MSM working hand in hand with the Obama reelection campaign. They are obligated to promote Obama’s class warfare at every opportunity.

Exactly, this whole election is going to be based on class warfare and the media is all too willing to go along with the strategy.

Jim, maybe we can just say the media is “biased” and leave it at that?

Well, that’s what we’ve come to expect from the MSM. They just seem to keep putting nails in their own coffins.

Which is worse Steve…Ann Romney spending their own money on horses, car elevators, and a 9 million dollar home or Michelle Obama spending $467,000 dollars for a lavish Spain trip on the taxpayer’s back???

Seems like an obvious one to me John, but these two papers don’t seem to have a problem with all the taxpayer money Michelle is spending.
