The Obama campaign sues to stifle the military vote in Ohio

August 2, 2012

According to this article Barack Obama’s campaign is trying to sue the state of Ohio in order to stifle the military vote in that state. Ohio law allows residents to vote early up until the Friday before an election, but military personnel are allowed to vote early for an additional three days before an election. The Obama for America Campaign, the DNC, and the Ohio Democratic Party feel these extra three days are “arbitrary” and have “no discernible rational basis,” so they are suing to take these three additional days away from the military voters.

The National Defense Committee is not happy:

[f]or each of the last three years, the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program has reported to the President and the Congress that the number one reason for military voter disenfranchisement is inadequate time to successfully vote.

Over the last three years it has been reported that the reason why many military people are not able to vote is because some of them simply do not have enough time, so it would seem that these additional three days do have a “discernible rational basis” and it is not an “arbitrary” law at all. Having seen this report Barack Obama’s reelection campaign decided to act by giving Ohio’s military people even less time to vote.

That should tell us something, after all Ohio is a swing state this year and the last poll of military personnel showed Romney leading Obama nationally by a margin of 58% to 34%. It seems to me that Barack Obama has a vested interest in stopping as many military personnel from voting as possible in a state as vital as Ohio, what other reason could the Obama campaign have for making this move? He will stop at nothing to win relection.

Well, it’s distasteful, sure, but are you all that surprised, really, when the GOP is going to such lengths as it is to disenfranchise Democratic voters?

For example, the State of Pennsylvania, in defending its new Voter ID law, admits it has no proof that any fraud the law was designed to prevent has ever taken place, and doesn’t believe it would take place in November 2012 even if the law were not in effect.

It’s acknowledged that those unlikely to have photo ID – minorities, those who don’t own cars (poor), and the elderly, are all more likely to vote Democratic than Republican. One GOP bigwig, addressing a partisan gathering of Republicans, bragged that the new voter ID law would permit Mitt Romney to win Pennsylvania! This sounds to me like tacit acknowledgement that without finding a way to keep some Dems from voting in November, Romney hasn’t got a chance!

    Hope all are well.

Take good care, and may God bless us all!

The people you mentioned somehow get on with their daily lives and I highly doubt they sit at home all day, they have places to go everyday and they somehow manage it. SOme of them even buy beer and cigarettes any you need an ID for that, asking a person to prove they are who they say they are in order to vote isn’t even the least bit controvercial to me.

Steve, they’ve been asked to prove who they are every time they’ve gone to vote over the past decades; now they’re being told that’s not good enough.

Many state have not asked people to prove they are who they say they are and I know because I live in one and I not one person I have seen has ever been asked for proof. (That changed this year with a new voter ID law, but it won’t go into effect until after the election.)

come to California and you’ll be able to vote as many times as you want and nobody will ask you for a thing. All you need is a name of any registered voter and they will hand you a ballot.

For those short of memory the same tactic invalidated thousands of military votes coming from overseas in the last election.

Polling in the military show they are overwhelmingly inclined to vote for Romney. Obama is perceived, rightly so, as anti-military whose only use for the military is for photo ops and not much more. Add to that yesterday he arrogantly flies into a National Guard Airbase in Ohio that is going to be closed. His narcissism may be a bit out of control in my opinion.

And these are the people who have earned the right to vote more than any of us who are sitting here, it is disgusting they way they are treated at times.

As for anonymous: No one is disenfrancising anyone. If welfare recipients, illegal aliens and the dead are to lazy to get I.D.s that states have offered, with the exception of those dead Democrat voters, to obtain I.D.s at no cost too bad for them – we owe them nothing. Enough with the phony victimization it’s getting tired and stale just like the Obama administration….WM

Why is it that it’s always the idiotic that post comments as Anonymous? Just sayin’.

And so it has begun…The win at any cost mantra has been unleashed. We will hear many more such stories…not from the LameStreamMedia…but from out here in cyberspace.

I will be a Poll Watcher in the Aug 14th primary and the November General Election here in Florida…so rest assured my precinct will be safe. It may behoove some of ya’all to see if you can Poll Watch in your precinct/districts as well.

    God help US.

Anonymous is actually The Georgia Yankee, his comment got cut off before he could finish his point. His full comment is now up there and I have deleted the Anonymous comment so his point could be taken in full context. I rarely agree with TGY but his arguments are always well thought out and presented here and I value his input.

This stooping pretty low even for Democrats. Everything possible should be done to protect the rights of our military folks to vote. Anything less would be a disgrace.

Exactly Jim, if anyone in this country has earned the right to vote it is those who defend our freedoms everyday and I find this to be disgusting.

There is no good reason for this, or at least none that I can ascertain. I would love to hear their explanation and rationale.

I’m sorry I didn’t get the actual facts until after posting my initial impressiona above.

It turns out the GOP-controlled legislature that actually cancelled early voting opportunities for Ohioans the last three days before Election Day – except, for technical reasons, for the members of the US military.

That’s a violation of the Constitution’s equal protection provisions. No group of citizens, not even those who serve our nation in uniform, should have greater access to the ballot box. The lawsuit challenges the legislature’s action in cancelling those extra three days of early voting for all Ohioans except those in the military.

Here’s more information about this manipulation of the facts by the Romney team:
