Then and now: Harry Reid on making baseless accusations

August 5, 2012

Last week Harry Reid accused Mitt Romney of failing to pay taxes for ten years. He made this claim with no evidence, siting an anonymous phone call he received by someone he claimed was close to Mitt Romney. This was a baseless claim designed for one reason and one reason only–smear the Republican nominee and sow the seeds of doubt about Mitt Romney’s trustworthiness with the voters.

When reporters pressed Harry Reid about his comments he refused to back down and in fact reasserted the baseless claim that Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes for a decade. When reporters asked him to reveal his source he remained indignant and declared he didn’t think “the burden should be on me” to prove the claims were true, but rather based solely on his accusation Mitt Romney is the one who should prove the claim is false. Harry Reid’s philosophy appears to be this: any accusation made by anyone is a serious charge and because of this that person is obligated to prove the claim false even if there is no evidence to indict that person. A person is guilty until proven innocent.

But apparently Harry Reid didn’t always feel this way. Some thirty years ago Harry Reid was accused, without evidence, of being in bed with the mob:

Mobster Joe Agosto was caught on tape by the FBI boasting that “I gotta Clean Face in my pocket”–and “Clean Face,” it was suggested at the time, was none other than Harry Reid himself

Harry Reid was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing but in 2008 Harry Reid wrote an autobiography in which he spoke about this issue. This is what he had to say:

Terrible claims had been released by federal agents without a shred of substantiating evidence that created, in Bunker’s words, an “aura of distrust.” To me, the whole period was the worst time in my family’s life.

He lamented the fact that federal agents made baseless claims about him which caused an “aura of distrust” toward him, and yet now he is doing the very same thing to Mitt Romney. He, of all people, should understand what can happen to somebody when baseless accusations are thrown around but that doesn’t seem to matter to him anymore because what is most important to him is holding on to his power in the Senate by any means necessary.

In 1986 Harry asked for a private meeting with the heads of the Nevada mining industry. I was one. In fact I was Chairman of the Board of the Nevada Mining Association that year. He was glad-handing and telling us how he was a friend of mining. I knew better and asked why he had supported three bills that were bad for the mining industry. He hemed and hawed and said “My father was a miner in Searchlight Nevada.” We were not impressed.

He had no answer did he? He was just saying what he thought you wanted to hear and when you called him on it he didn’t know what to say.

Reid is a banal character no different than the vast majority of politicians who don’t know when to leave office. Reid is rank, corrupt a known liar in essence he has all the characteristics of a parasite living on the public dole while in the employ of those that are incrementally undermining our way of life in order to promote their bottom line – simple as that….WM

And I guess the people didn’t know when it was time to make him leave office either!

But, William, he has such a soft, soothing voice, surely someone like that would not lie to us?

Well, I heard from this guy that Harry Reid is a pedophile. Where’s the proof he isn’t?

Shame there isn’t an edit button here. Alinsky would be very proud of his mobster disciple with these baseless allegations.

It is up to him to prove he isn’t, if he doesn’t prove it it must mean he is guilty.

It’s more than just a smear. It’s to distract from the important issues that the administration does not want to talk about, like jobs, gas prices, and the debt.

Here’s what Forbes had to say about it:

An interesting article, but there is a difference between an attention starved Trump making accusations and the Senate leader making claims while on the floor of the Senate.

Romney needs to get back on the subject that people care about. For the mindless, this is all they are hearing and believing.

I don’t think Romney has been too distracted by this, and I think it will backfire because the only people who care about this are already going to vote for Obama.

Personally as a private citizen, Mitt Romney should sue Harry Reid for slander because the slander is designed to hurt his reputation. I wonder if anyone has thought of this?

I was wondering about that myself. I think Reid is safe from the comments he made on the floor, but I wouldn’t think he was safe for repeating them outside the chamber. However, I am not sure Romney would benefit from this politically and it would probably be a major distraction.

Harry apparently hasn’t released his taxes and now the White House has distanced itself from Harry.

I also learned today that when billionaire Perot ran he only released one year of his taxes while Romney has produced two years and those for his wife, too.

I don’t remember Clinton criticizing Perot or Democrats saying anything about Kerry’s wealth.

    Just a distraction.

I saw that the White House backed away from Reid, I wonder if they will tell him to shut up now. Now that we know Kerry hid is boat out of state to avoid paying taxes I think it is about time the IRS take a closer look at him. Or how about Ted Kennedy claiming his mother was a Florida resident at the time of her death even though she hadn’t even been to the state in over a decade in order to avoid Massachusetts’s death tax. These people are nothing but hypocrites on this issue.
