Open thread for Sunday August 19: The Big Hand edition

August 19, 2012

Here is today’s open thread, please feel free to leave links and discuss whatever is on your mind today. I have decided to cut down the number of open threads to probably two a week, most likely one on the weekend and one mid-week, because it seems as if people are trying to follow the conversation in a couple of different open threads at the same time. I think this will help to consolidate the conversation and make it a little easier on everyone to follow the updates.

For my musical selection today I have decided to go into relative obscurity to bring you a song from my all time favorite band–The Cure.

This is a song which was recorded in 1992 for the ‘Wish” album but didn’t make the final cut. It was eventually released as a B-side on ‘A Letter to Elise’ and it is one of my all time favorite songs from The Cure.

There are many opinions as to what the song is about, from God, to drugs, to death, but I look at this song through a political prism, although this is unlikely what the song is about–the Big Hand is the government, promising you the world so you fall in line:

but when the big hand speaks
it’s like fireworks and heaven
so you listen
don’t think
and wish for nothing at all
and when the big hand sings
it’s like fireworks and friends

But then The Big Hand takes everything away despite its promises, and that point is driven home in the closing verse:

so when the big hand holds up all your favourite things
and with a touch like glass
starts to squeeze
you don’t ask
“why me?”
you just slip to the floor
just slip to your knees

Because this was a B-side there are few live recordings of it, and the recordings I have found are of low quality so I am giving you the official B-side version of the song with a slide show of the band when they were in their heyday.

It is always good to fine tune things, sounds good on a couple times a week.
I would appreciate some positive thoughts for my Mom who is 92 and fell and broke her femur yesterday up towards the hip. She will need alot of rehab afterwards. She is in St. Louis and I am in Little Rock, Ark watching my grandson and can’t get there til Tuesday morning. She is a fiesty little lady, so hopefully will pull thru the surgery fine. It don’t like not being there.

Surgery went well, she didn’t need blood and is coming out of the anethesia. That is a weight lifted, nothing like not being there and waiting for a call.

I am so glad that she made it through the surgery okay and I hope she continues to improve. At least you have a two year old who will be able to take your mind off of what is going on–at least a little bit.

My thoughts are with you and your mother, I hope she is okay. It must be tough not being there with her, but I am sure she understands why you are not.

Yes, I am sure she would not want me to leave her only great-grandbaby. She is in good hands, the doctor talked to me on the phone and I had faith in what she told me and told her to take care of my Mom.

Steve, I’m not very good at the computer but I went back to chron.com, the article is from 8-16-2012 titled “red october redux, John Cornyn(R)Texas demands answers from Pentagon on russian sub” John Cornyn’s website may have this as well, sometimes I feel like a dinosaur handling the computer equip. Please forgive my ignorance.

But raul grivalvo is bad news big time for us buy most of my spanish neighbors support the rotten schmo.democratic church groups show & ask me to point out the spanish people for them.

sorry, the icon covers up the writing so I can’t finish my statement. I was trying to say the sunday democratic church groups go throughout our neighborhoods and seek supporters, i’ve been asked to point out who my spanish neighbors are and I tell them to go ask for themselves. How rude!

MT, we have had people come around the neighborhood asking not only for any Hispanics that might live there, but any minorities, as well. I can’t figure out what they want, but they do NOT want to ask me any questions, so imagine it might be strictly political.

Thanks for the prayers, it is hard to wait for a call, but glad she made it thru the surgery. It is early morning and I have not heard anything, so guess no news is good news! Yes, the grandbaby did take my mind off of it. He is a blonde-haired,hazel eyed, ball of energy and I love him dearly.

    http://dailycaller.com/2012/08/20/shock-poll-obama-could-lose-illinois/
I wanted to post this, kind of makes my morning. It looks like Obama is NOT doing well here in Illinois. As it stated, in 2010 Bill Brady was so close to Gov. Quinn in the race that I imagine all the democrats were sweating it. We have always been a solid blue state, but looks like with what this administration has been pulling on us, that even the democrats have a boiling point and they have probably reached it.
