Open thread for Saturday September 8: God is in the platform edition
Here is your open thread for Saturday, September 8th. I am posting it a little early because I am not sure I will have time to post it tomorrow before I head to work. Feel free to post links to interesting articles and discuss whatever issues may arise during the course of the day.
With the God is in the platform debacle from the DNC this past week I thought I would share three songs about Christianity from Nick Cave. The first is self explanatory and is called ‘There is a Kingdom.’
Here it is:
The second song is entitled ‘Hallelujah’ and in this song Nick Cave sings about giving his nurse the weekend off. After making this decision he is unable to function and decides to take a walk. While on this walk he comes to a house where “all hopes and dreams are kept within” and a young lady tempts him to enter the house. Nick Cave realizes his nurse would not approve and heads home singing Hallelujah. I believe the nurse is a metaphor for God and the house represents temptation, in the end Nick Cave resists temptation and returns to his nurse. Here it is, what do you think about my interpretation:
This last song is THE Nick Cave song and it is called ‘The Mercy Seat’ and it is about a man on death row for apparently committing murder. While on death row he begins to learn about Jesus and while he maintains his innocence the song alternates between what he is learning and his past. As the song continues it become apparent that the subject is indeed guilty although he tries to separate himself from the crime by declaring he has a “good hand” and an “evil hand” yet he keeps coming back to what he is learning about God on death row.
As the story continues the subject begins to compare the Mercy Seat in heaven to what he now sees as the mercy seat on earth–the electric chair–and while it becomes apparent through the song that he is guilty he still claims he is innocent and is not afraid to die until he finally climbs into the mercy seat. At this point he confesses he has been lying and the song ends leaving us to wonder about his fate in death.

We have a delightful 55 degrees here this morning, a high of 72. I bring this up because it has been so horribly hot with no rain. We are now getting rain and cooler temps, so Fall is coming. I am at my best in the Fall and Winter, so I think there is hope for the USA, based on that alone. Sounds kind of wierd, but my mood improves when it is cooler. SO, I will try to start taking a more optimistic view of what is going on and hope for the best. Things have to improve, don’t they? We are pretty close to the bottom at this point. We are in the position to turn this thing around. Enjoy your weekend, everyone.

We had a cool morning but it got pretty hot, now we have a storm rolling in and the temperature has dropped and the wind is picking up–it feels great! Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler. Have a great weekend

Found a great little toon the other day at Townhall on the “God” blowup at the DNC. Thought to pass it along with my comments. Democrats and God

Ok, I thought I could be more optimistic, but after reading an article I came across this:
Obama promised that he’d pursue “the kind of bold, persistent experimentation that Franklin Roosevelt pursued during the only crisis worse than this one.”
What do the rest of you make of this comment? From what I am reading, this is the most telling comment in his whole speech. I think we should be very afraid of what is to come. As before, he told us what he had planned, no one listend then and apparently no one is listening now. Will that be our critical mistake?

It is very telling indeed Lou, this president’s only answer it to increase the government and if you think he has done a good job of this wait until he he reelected.

Isn’t that where most of the news jobs are being created? I was listening just now to Red Eye Radio, caught the tailend of it sounded like college kids maybe being interviewed and asked about companies making a profit for their business, they were all against profits being made. If I got the jest of it from the little I heard, they believe there should BE no profit…isn’t that how they can hire new people and benefit the community? Is this how kids are taught now days? I mean, why would a company stay in business just to break even? Make sense? Guess it doe to them.

I saw a headline on Drudge, but didn’t read the article, about how some of the dem delegates were against all corporate profits, now that is really scary!

Here is another good article about the state that the Democratic Party finds itself in. Obama is not in the position that they wanted him in at this time of the campaign:

Good article Lou! The Democrats have realized that Obama’s star is fading and they are trying to keep a poker face about it, but the people see Obama for who he is now and he isn’t the centrist that he and the MSM portrayed him as in 2008.

Here is an article that sums up what alot of the different Conservative talk show hosts, radio hosts and journalists had to say about the DNC conference, thought you might want to read it:

Obama is preparing new executive order to “secure” the Internet, since congress failed to act.. In other words, voted it down.

B, I think we are going to be bombarded with EO’s in the next couple of months, then after the election it will remain to be seen how our country goes,,,up or down.

I ran across this article from Maureen Dowd this morning. She used to back up the President at all cost, this article was very cynical of him. It was a strange article. What was even more telling are the comments afterwards, attacking HER for what she said. I guess there are still those out there that will not HEAR someone print anything negative about their guy. As usual, it is our fault, not his that we are in the position we are in.

I enjoyed that! I was fun to read Dowd come back down to earth and realize how arrogant this president really is. Oh how the mighty has fallen!

One at a time, that is all we need. Just one journalist changing their opinion and actually writing about it, maybe word will get out then. She was a staunch backer of Obama, seems she has had a change of heart. I wonder if it has hit her in the pocketbook or what it could have been? Maybe she sees it for what it is, that things are changing and it is not a sure thing of him getting back in. Is this a CYA for Maureen, just in case Romney gets elected? Guess we will see. “Mighty” is not a word I would use for Obama, he was propped up at all cost to the integrity of most of the journalists. I hope they are happy that their livelyhoods have been compromised and for what??? That proverbial empty suit, hope they are happy with their decision.

I want to take a few minutes here and vent about the CFL’s! Since they took the 100 watt incandescent bulbs off the market and now we only have 75 watt on down (I stocked up on the 100 watts), we are also going to lose the 75 watt at the end of this year, I believe. I tried, I really tried to like the CFL’s, I did. I can’t read with them, if they break, you have a problem and so many of them are going in the landfills to leach into our ground water, I just don’t like them. I won’t mention the cost and how they do NOT last longer. This is just a small thing compared to what all we are having taken away from us, for our own good. I don’t want to start on the damn “smart meter”, but that is an issue here with Ameren Illinois wanting to put them in. Besides them knowing what we are using and if we are home, they will have the ability to shut us off and control the house….did I mention that all of them feed into a centrally located box in the neighborhood that can be hacked to see if you are home using power? Easy break ins? I know there are issues already with people getting sick with them in use as I am sure CFL’s cause a problem with the mercury gas when broken(I know it is a small amount, but who needs it?). How much more are we going to put up with “for our own good”? Our food will be monitored, our gas so high in price we are being limited to how far out from our houses we can travel, what is the end result the government wants? Is it total control of our lives? Micro-chips come to mind! Have we been already chipped with the vaccines they want us to take so we don’t catch the flu or get shingles or pnemonia? I don’t want or need the vaccines.Just some of the things I was thinking about this morning, I better start looking at kittahs or puppies for awhile. Hope all is well with you and that Sunday is a nice relaxing day, I am sure Monday will be chocked full of “stuff” that we will have to decipher.

Simply put, the CFLs suck! And the sad part is we have Bush to thank for this. This is the one time we really can blame Bush, although this might have been an amendment added to a bill he really needed to sign if I remember correctly. The Dems may have forced his hand on this. The 75 watt bulbs are going away next and I think eventually all incandescent light bulbs will be banned.

Sorry, Steve, this thread must be my own person thread, from the looks of it. Ok then, yesterday I promised myself I would take a more optimistic view on America and this president! Well, I keep reading and the more I read the more upset I become. I am not sure what we did as a nation to deserve this man (term used lightly), but we have him for at least a couple more months. I found this and with struggling with a drought for the past few months, my blood started to boil…have you seen this????

I found something that didn’t make me boil, but laugh, thought I would share it:
Subject: The $50 Lesson
Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in the front yard, my neighbors stopped to chat as they returned home from walking their dog.
During our friendly conversation, I asked their 12 year old daughter what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President someday.
Both of her parents – liberal Democrats – were standing there, so I asked her, “If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?”
She replied, “I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.”
Her parents beamed with pride!
“Wow…what a worthy goal!” I said. “But you don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that!” I told her.
“What do you mean?” she replied.
So I told her, “You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I’ll pay you $50. Then you can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.”
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, “Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?”
I said, “Welcome to the Republican Party.”
Her parents aren’t speaking to me.
