Barack Obama blames the Congress for GITMO remaining open
This was a story that was missed last week when Barack Obama appeared on The Daily Show. One of the promises that Barack Obama failed to deliver on was his promise to close GITMO within one year, of course we know that didn’t happen and on The Daily Show he blamed the Congress:
There are some things that we haven’t gotten done. I still want to close Guantanamo. We haven’t been able to get that through Congress,” Obama said during his Oct. 18 appearance on the program
He couldn’t get closing GITMO through the Congress? Didn’t he sign an Executive Order demanding the prison be closed right after taking office? And if I am not mistaken didn’t he have a majority in the House and in the Senate when he took office? I guess this is an admission that he couldn’t get his own party behind him on this issue and his Executive Order was nothing but show to appease his base with no real substance behind it.
And suddenly now he is worried about making sure the Congress “reigns him in” after he has moved around the Congress on issues such as cap and trade and the DREAM Act. While Barack Obama is willing to take all the credit for successes like killing Osama bin Laden he simply isn’t willing to take the blame when he is unable to make good on a promise so he blames the very same Congress he has been working around for many months.
Barack Obama cannot have it both ways, but he sure is trying like hell.

We cannot even possibly keep up with the lies. Most people don’t have the time or ivlinstion to be the news junkies such as ourselves. I share your concern about tonight. His polls are slipping, he will not let this continue. I hear they have something on him and will come out later this week. Cant think of her name, the celebrity lawyer.

I think that is Obama’s plan, throw so much at us that we can’t keep up. Gloria Allred is who you are thinking of and I have heard the same thing, we will have to stay tuned because this is how Obama operates.

That’s a load of hogwash. I have never seen a President talk out of both sides of his mouth like this one.

If Obama crapped his pants he would blame it on someone else… The guy is a despicable joke…

He did in the first debate and he blamed it on John Kerry. 🙂

I distinctly remember when he did try to close GITMO and the Republicans went ballistic crying it’d instigate more terrorist attacks on “US soil”. There were even a couple of prisons lined up to take on those prisioners. One town was fairly in favor of it due to the jobs it would bring but the GOP opposed the idea tooth and nail.
I also recall Rudy Giuliani declaring right after 9/11 that “We will bring those reponsible for these attacks and try them here in New York” or something very close to that. Then when Obama decided to go that route, the GOP INCLUDING Giuliani, went nuts scaring the hell out of the public saying this would be all the excuse al Queda would need to launch another attack.
As far as Obama blaming Congress, there is validity for that. All the GOP opposed it (no surprise there. For it before they were against it) and it would only take one Democrat to break from the party to allow the all too frequent filibuster going in the Senate. So saying, he couldn’t convince his party to tow the line isn’t all the valid either given it would’ve only taken one blue dog Dem to break that filibuster proof majoriy. Which, by the way only lasted until January 2010 when Scott Brown got in there.

But he didn’t need the Congress to approve his EO and yet now he is blaming them, that is the point. He didn’t need the Congress to pass the DREAM Act, this was no different, but he knew all along he couldn’t close GITMO he just did this all for show.

The EO’s can only do so much. He didn’t pass the Dream Act. The Dream Act is a piece of legislation. All Obama did, and was able to do, with that EO was to stop deporting youths who have been here since a very young age. It’s not legislation.
As far as closing GITMO, maybe he knew he was limited due to Congress but at least he DID something. That’s not the same as “doing it for show” That part is just specualtion.

I understand that EOs aren’t legislation, that was the point I was trying to make when I said he didn’t need the COngress to approve it. I didn’t do a very good job at explaining what I was tying to say.
Barack OBama didn’t do anything, he just made it appear as if he was doing something, which is exactly what I wrote at the time.

Well Steve, that’s a matter of interpretation. You can make that determination that it was essentially a political move with no actual intent to “do” anything. On the other hand I cna just as easily say, he did what he was able to do with the tools he had available. What’s interesting about both interpretaions of the same situation is that there is little support one can point to for either side.

You are right, neither of us have any proof to support our positions only speculation and interpretation and yes it is interesting to see how two people can look at the same thing and see two different things.

Lou> I tend to get my information from a broad set of resources such as Associated Press, Reuters, CNN, the Washington Post, Politifact, the Christian Science Monitor. And to a lesser extent, Time, Politico, ABC News, The Economist, Bloomberg News, Scientific American, etc.
That’s a decent sampling of the sources I utilize. You’re welcome to visit my site for more and see how they are used within my writings.

The man has serious psycological problems. It is not possible for him to admit when he is wrong. Hell, he even thought he won the first debate. He could have done anything he wanted in the firts two years. He was too busy playing golf.

The fact that the Democrats were in charge of the whole operation is a fact that many people have forgotten. Barack Obama loves to run against the Republicans in the Congress but he also ignores the fact he could have done anything he wanted to in the first two years and he wasted all his time pushing through a healthcare law that nobody wanted.

That’s the rumor; I am sure it will be some women who say they weren’t treated fairly by Romney and I wouldn’t put this passed Obama at all because this is how he got elected in Chicago in the first place. This could backfire on him because I think people will see it for what it is and will not be swayed.

MT, that anyone, I repeat anyone would take Allred seriously, is beyond my thought process. She is a joke, she has outlived her usefullness. She needs to tone her image down because she is becoming the “Leona Helmsley” of attorneys, a gross caricature of what may once have been a thriving career that has taken a nose dive. Well, that is my opinion of her, guess opinions vary.

Welcome back Lou! I have the same opinion of her but it looks like this is going to go down tomorrow, here’s hoping that most Americans will see this for what it is.

This is an example of a candidate making promises he couldn’t keep. What is particularly irksome about this broken promise is that GITMO was this central theme of the Democrats that Republicans were ruining America’s “world image” yet when push comes to shove, nobody wants the place to close.
Terrible.

Exactly Harrison, if the Democrats were being truthful about how GITMO affected our world standing they would have shut it down when they had the chance. The Democrats had full control for two years and they did nothing to shut GITMO down.

Harrison, I vote it becomes the new “Alcatraz”. Steve, we know how the Democrats like to talk, but there is not much action from it.

Welcome back Lou, glad to see you back! I agree with you Steve. Not only did the democrats not close gitmo but they pushed heavy duty regulations on us, crushing the financial backs of Americans and small businesses. During the debate, the death stare obama gave Romney was chilling, he looked like a snake waiting to attack. I thought Romney was cool as a cucumber but completely in charge of the situation. I want this attitude of Romney’s for my President.

Thanks, MT! I also agree about Obama and that stare. Was it supposed to intimidate Romney? I would imagine better men (term used lightly) than Obama have tried that tactic and it failed. The neck sticking out towards Romney was a bit odd looking as well, not sure what that was meaning, listening intently perhaps? At any rate, I am sure that Obama thought he had the upper hand. I also have to give Bob some credit for not demeaning himself as Candy did, he actually looked professional and did not buy into backing Obama, even though I would label him a “somewhat-liberal”. I wonder why there were no “conservative” moderators? I can probably go ahead and answer my own question,
no need for anyone to fill me in on that one.
