Universal background checks for firearm purchases fails in the Senate

April 17, 2013

Chalk one up for the constitutionalists and the second amendment supporters because today the Senate defeated an amendment which would have created universal background checks on all firearms transactions by a vote of 54 to 46.

The mainstream media had been trying to sell the universal background checks as a highly popular measure with the American people to put pressure on the Congress to pass it for Barack Obama but obviously the propaganda blitz was ineffective because five Democrats knew they would be in trouble with the voters if they supported it.

Harry Reid also voted against it and he did it for two reasons in my opinion: First, this is a procedural move which will allow him to bring it up for a vote on a later date and second; he also knew he would be in trouble in the polls and the procedural move provided him with the cover he needed to protect himself from his constituents at the voting booth. He can tell the liberals he voted against it to have another shot at passing it and he can tell the conservatives he voted against it to protect the second amendment, this was a win-win vote for him.

This man be a victory today but the fight is not over so we cannot let our guard down. This will be back for another vote at some time and we have to remain vigilant lest they pass this measure when we are distracted on other issues. And mark my words, the Democrats and the mainstream media will be creating plenty of distractions.

The Senate vote today, was welcome news. Your are right about Harry Reid, he gets to have it both ways. I did notice that other than Reid, three Democrats from red states and up for reelection this time around, did vote with the Republicans. But you are correct, this will come up again and we must remain ready. On a related note, I wonder if those who favor expanded background checks will now call for checks on those buying Pressure Cookers!

Yep, those who were worried about reelection voted against it and that tells us the American people are not for this legislation no matter what the msm tries to tell us.

While I am not against going through an FFL for gun sales, my understanding is that the way the bill was drafted if would have created a registry, among other things.

Yes, once the feds know who is getting the background checks they will no who bought what and that is the main reason why this had to be defeated.

After I got home from work I turned on CBS news and you would have thought the world came to an end. I mean there reporting was extremely slanted towards the pro gun control mob. They treated this like America took a step backwards because 2nd amendment rights were upheld.

I am not surprised. They worked hard to help Obama pass this and they failed. It really does say something when the constitution wins and the media thinks that is a loss.

On another note this was a draw for ulterior) motives as well as a victory for the Bill of Rights; four RINOS for and four donkeys against. How sad that we are left to ponder that the left, along with their hoping that the Boston bomber is a disaffected, angry, right wing white guy, may be hoping for another tragedy of Connecticut proportions to give their anti second amendment movement that final push. Two more weasels on the right side of the aisle along with the four posturing Dems and authoritarian gun control becomes a reality.

There is no doubt in my mind that they are awaiting another incident to exploit. They way they exploited the Sandy Hook families was appauling.
