Will Mark Steyn be my next Senator?

August 18, 2013

I am sure most readers of America’s Watchtower know who Mark Steyn is: he is an author with an uncanny wit and a dry, sarcastic sense of humor who sometimes fills in for Rush Limbaugh. (Personally, I only find Rush Limbaugh’s show to be listenable when Mark Steyn is hosting, but that is neither here nor there.) He also happens to be a resident of New Hampshire.

Hugh Hewitt has started a petition to draft Mark Steyn to run against Jeanne Shaheen in the 2014 election. The petition can be seen here.

When pressed by Hewitt about running against Jeanne Shaheen he did not say yes, but he did not say no either:

But in his regular appearance on Thursday, Steyn expressed his disappointment in the lack of the quality of candidates considering a run for the seat, but he didn’t entirely rule it out either.

[M]y heart sank somewhat when I read in the Union Leader, I think it was the other day, about those who were preparing to run against Jeanne Shaheen for U.S. Senate seat,” Steyn wrote. “And I wish this state was the way it was 20 years ago, but the New Hampshire Republican Party was too often was content to be in office rather than in power. That’s a problem with the Republican Party generally, I feel. And suddenly I regret that Jeanne Shaheen was able to defeat John Sununu six years ago and I will take yours advice having just given my Palmerstonian speech, I’m not sure that’s something Granite Staters are ready for

Well, I for one am ready for it, bring it on! Jeanne Shaheen has a large war chest already, as well as major name recognition, so it will be hard to defeat her. Mark Steyn would be able to raise money and has name recognition, he could give her a run for her money.

He does note the difficulty he would have running as a writer because he knows what he has written could come back to haunt him–he surely pissed some people off with his writing and that could play against him:

One of the great things about running — about writers running is they have hostages to fortune at least, they’re the people least suited to run for office in the United States because they don’t just have one damaging quote for somebody you know like that fellow [Todd] Akin or whatever it is. There’s like half a century terrible quotes where the writer runs

But then, with typical Mark Steyn humor, he states perhaps because he was born in Canada he should set his sights on the presidency:

I don’t know whether I should aim a little higher,” he added. “I don’t know whether I could dust off my Hawaiian birth certificate and just run straight for President. I might as well. Everybody else, everybody else Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio has some sort of incipient birther problem with the 2016 campaign. So I might as well just throw my hat in that one as well

I hope that Mark Steyn can be persuaded to run if for no other reason than it will take what is shaping up to be a dreary election and make it much more interesting. At least for a little while in New Hampshire. Other states have elected people such as Jesse Ventura and Al Franken so why not Mark Steyn?

I listen to Hugh Hewitt regularly and was listening when this came up. I AM ALL FOR IT if for no other reason than that Canada took him to court in order to take away his right to free speech (they don’t have that right in Canada, and we won’t have it here under the leftist regime). He was arrested for saying he didn’t love the Islamist Jihad. I don’t remember whether he fled Canada, or they gave up but he didn’t have to go to prison, so it is good either way.
Come on New Hampshire, GO FOR IT!

Could New Hampshire and the nation be that lucky? Wouldn’t you love to hear Mark Steyn debate on the floor of the Senate?

We probably won’t be that lucky, but it sure would be fun to see him pick them apart on the Senate floor. They wouldn’t know what to do with him.

Who would dare to insult any American voter with the presumption he/she (not meaning to designate transsexual, just saving on typing the word or) would vote for an intelligent, articulate and educated candidate whose head was not up his ass? Seriously though, i echo COF’s sentiment; Imagine Mark Steyn, Mark Levin, Michael Savage and even Rush Limbaugh debating the low life left wing Obamabot types on the senate floor?

It sure would be something to see! He would have them spinning in circles and unsure about what to do about him.

Having a good candidate with name recognition is just the start. You need to be a good community organizer with a clear concise message. Yes I know that is what BO is, but it is also what wins races. A candidate needs to go door to door in those swing precincts. You need the reluctant independent voters to vote. You need a grassroots organization. Each member needs to find 5 others and convince them to vote. Rep to often disdain getting out and doing the hard mundane task. Every Dem Senate seat should have a challenger and very RINO should be primaried in 2014.

I couldn’t agree more, we need nearly a 100% turnaround in the Congress if we want anything to change.

Pissing people off is not necessarily a bad thing in these times. If it gets that person to start “thinking” about what was said, it is a plus in my book. I like Steyn, he has more love for this country than most Americans do. He has the recognition and he is smart, both pluses as well. Could we hope that some that have been in the shadows are starting to come out and taking a stand? Time will tell.

Pissing people off is what I try to do hear. I like to try to get under people’s skin: those who agree with me I want to see as upset as I am, and those who disagree I want to make think. It is the only way to get people motivated, you would like to think people would be motivated on their own but sadly that is not the case.

I would absolutely ADORE to see Mark Steyn in the Senate, but is he a citizen? Article III says that a senator has to have been a citizen for 9 years.

    But, oh… wouldn’t it be grand? 😀

There is some question regarding his eligibility, I forgot to leave a link to the whole article when I wrote this but I just added it. In the article Hugh Hewitt says the 17th amendment changes things:

“But there have been some questions as to whether or not Steyn would be constitutionally eligible for a run. Article I, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution states one must be at least 30 years of age, a resident of the state they would be representing and a U.S. citizen for no less the nine years. But according to Hewitt, the 17th Amendment eviscerates all those requirements and leaves it solely in the hands of the voters.

“The 17th Amendment comes along and says nothing about that,” Hewitt said on his Friday program. “It just says the senator shall be directly elected.”

Not sure I agree with that however.

LOVE Mark Steyn, can’t stand to listen to Rush. My Constitution source says “Note: Article I, section 3, of the Constitution was modified by the 17th amendment.” Modified, not replaced or superseded. having to do with the election of senators ONLY. So is the rest of Article I Section 3 in force? Research assistant Laura leaps into action. 🙂

Steve, since he lives in your state, maybe reaching out to him regarding the NFP? Wink, wink.

I am with you on both Rush and Mark. Rush, when he isn’t talking about himself or what the media is saying about him, does more harm than good and the Sandra Fluke fiasco is a perfect example. He used that for personal gain until it came back to haunt him but by the time he apologized the damage was done, In my opinion he cares more about self promotion than he does about the country.
That is a great idea about reaching out to Steyn, I will do that!
