Was Syrian rebel supporter Elizabeth O’Bagy really fired for lying on her resume, or is there more to this story?

September 11, 2013

If you have been paying real close attention to the Syria crisis you know the name Elizabeth O’Bagy. In case you are not familiar with her, here is a brief summary: Elizabeth O’Bagy worked for a conservative think tank called the Institute for the Study of War until she was fired today for lying on her resume. (More on that later, it isn’t quite true.) It turns out she does not have her PH.D.  She has been a vocal supporter for Barack Obama’s plan to bomb Syria in support of the al-Qaeda rebels and she wrote an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal which several politicians–including John McCain and John Kerry–used as justification for war with Syria.

With the back story complete let us continue:

First of all; why is it that lawmakers are using an op-ed piece to justify and condone war? That seems like a dubious source in the first place, and is called even more into question now that her credibility has been ruined. The Obama regime has refused to release any information they have on the chemical attacks while several other countries have released information which shows it might have been the al-Qaeda rebels which used the weapons in an attempt to draw the United States into the conflict on their side.

If the president and the Congress want to convince the American people that we might need to attack Syria, and the evidence is a slam dunk (where have we heard that before) than why not release the information? Instead we were told to read this op-ed piece; is this op-ed piece really all they have to go on? To paraphrase ‘A Few Good Men,’ please tell me that you have something more than phone records. (And we know the Obama regime has phone records.)

We do not know if there is more because the most transparent administration in history has decided not to show us the proof, but there is more on Elizabeth O’Bagy. It turns out, if this story is true, that she was not fired for lying on her resume after all. While it is true that she does not have her PH.D., the think tank knew this at the time they hired her so she could not possibly have been fired for misleading the group.

The Institute for the Study of War knew that controversial Syria analyst Elizabeth O’Bagy lacked a PhD long before it fired her, according to the group’s own website.

In fact, the neoconservative think tank knew she was in a joint Ph.D. program all along. The author bio from her March 2013 study  of the Free Syrian Army says O’Bagy is “in a joint Master’s/PhD program in Arab Studies and Political Science at Georgetown University and is working on a dissertation on women’s militancy.”

So when they was she really fired? The truth might just lie here:

The termination came after a series of articles in The Daily Caller revealed O’Bagy’s connection with a pro-rebel lobbying group that was not disclosed in a Wall Street Journal op-ed by O’Bagy.

But in addition to her work for the Institute for the Study of War, O’Bagy is also the political director for the Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), a group that advocates within the United States for Syria’s rebels — a fact that the Journal did not disclose in O’Bagy’s piece.

In an interview with The Daily Caller, O’Bagy said that despite her title as the group’s political director, she is paid as a contractor.

She insisted that she is not involved in the political lobbying that SETF does.

Her defense is that while she is the political director on paper she really has nothing to do with political lobbying. Considering the fact she has already been caught lying once I find it hard to believe this defense is at all credible.

And to top it all off she was drawing her salary from the State Department:

Most of the contracts that I’ve been a part of through the Task Force have been through CSO, which is the Conflict and Stabilization Office[sic],” O’Bagy told The Daily Caller. O’Bagy was likely referring to the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, a State Department-funded organization.

Where does the Federal Government get its money from? Why, the taxpayers of course! It is beginning to look more and more like Ms. O’Bagy was an Obama regime plant sent out there to write an op-ed piece designed to win support for the regime’s plan and people like John Kerry, John McCain, and everyone else who cited this piece as justification for war were played for the suckers they are.

Despite all this we are still being reassured that the op-ed piece was accurate, but with all the lies and the manipulation surrounding this case I find it hard to believe any of it at this point.

    Great article, Steve!

This is what happens when our elected officials violate the solemn trust of the People over and over again. THEY ARE NO LONGER TRUSTED ON ANYTHING THEY SAY.

They might very well have evidence it was Assad, but they’ve lied too many times for us to trust anything they say. THIS is why violating the public trust IS a high crime and misdemeanor warranting impeachment. When those who govern can’t be trusted, they can no longer govern effectively.

It is to our great shame that lying by our elected officials has not only become commonplace and accepted, it is EXPECTED that our representatives will lie to us.

Thanks Laura! You are right, her article might be spot on but we cannot trust her because she lost all credibility and it is a shame we have to think twice before we decide what we can believe from our elected officials and those they send out to spread their message.
We have reached a point in America where the lying has become so commonplace that the public has grown used to it, because of this they have a “this is what I expected anyway” attitude and they have grown to accept the lying as normal and that is a shame.

Good Lord, Steve, nothing about this administration is above board. Obama has an agenda and for him, the ends always justify the means. How did our fellow Americans elect this scam artist a second time?

So true Jim! We cannot at this point believe anything Obama does is on the level. How he was reelected is beyond me.

This is the story I have mentioned to read. She is connected to Liz Cheney and a number of military contractors who support/ fund this organization, the institute for the study of war. I checked out their board and financials.. I knew I should have done a post on her. I will try to follow the money tomorrow. I didn’t think anyone would be interested.

I thought of you when I was writing this because you knew from the beginning something was fishy here. I understand what you are saying about wondering if people would be interested in this and I didn’t write anything about this for the same reason until she was fired today and the story started to fall apart. I look forward to your post tomorrow.

Definitely interested, bunkerville. I look forward to reading it. 🙂

Bunkerville was on top of this, he knew something was not right from the beginning and I cannot wait to see what he comes up woth.

So then if she s drawing a salary from the State Dept she has to lie since it’s part of her job description. Is Hanoi John expected to carry the load by himself? The liar in chief has apparently swayed a fair portion of the American people with his bland sorry ass insipid presentation last night – if you believe the polls- and his subordinates like O’Bagofshit must get their marching orders from above.

    • September 12, 2013 6:23 am

There is no doubt that she got her orders from above. This whole thing is a show and these people are all the actors.

One of the more interesting facets to this is something most people did not know, that being that the rebels (ahem, al-Qaeda) has a lobbying group here in the USA. To think that a group heavily infiltrated with the same terrorist organization responsible for 9-11 is wining and dining our elected officials is just infuriating.

    • September 11, 2013 9:13 pm

Mr. Phipps, I agree, unbelievably infuriating!

Most of our politicians would put to shame any hotel prostitute so fish and chips with those planning to kill us, no biggie.

    • September 12, 2013 6:24 am

I have to admit that I didn’t know this was the case. And yes, it is infuriating to think that people linked to September 11th actually have lobbyists in Washington!
