New CNN presidential poll shows Chris Christie and Hillary Clinton tied: Don’t believe the hype

December 27, 2013

From this CNN article:

A new CNN poll finds that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are essentially tied in a potential 2016 presidential matchup.

Christie gets the support of 48 percent of registered voters, a 2-point lead over Clinton’s 46 percent, but one that is within the poll’s 3-point margin of error.

The CNN poll is the third national poll this month to show the two current leading presidential prospects in a tie. A Public Policy Polling survey gave Christie 45 percent to Clinton’s 42, and a Quinnipiac poll gave Christie 42 to Clinton’s 41.

The article then goes on to tell the voters that Chris Christie is basically the only Republican who can beat Hillary Clinton in 2016:

The close numbers at this early stage indicate that Christie could prove much more competitive against Clinton than other potential 2016 Republican contenders.

The next-closest Republican is Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the former vice presidential nominee whose star may have risen from his role in the recent bipartisan budget deal. Clinton leads him by 8 points in the poll.

She beats Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) by 13 points, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee by 15, Texas Gov. Rick Perry by 17, and freshman Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) by 18. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Sen. Rick Santorum are both down 19. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is down the most of the listed options, at 21 points.

Christie is the only Republican who wins suburbanites and older voters against Clinton, according to the poll. Christie also wins six in 10 independents. Not surprisingly, there is a stark difference in support between genders, with men backing Christie by 14 points and women going for Clinton by 10 points.

And so it begins: The media has decided which Republican candidate it finds least offensive and the drive to convince the voters that Christie has to be the nominee if the Republicans are to have any chance at defeating the Democrats in 2016 has begun.

This is the same old tired template which was also used in 2012 when the media proclaimed that Mitt Romney was the only candidate who could beat Barack Obama, but of course once he won the nomination the media quickly turned on him. The same can be said about the 2008 election and the media’s successful attempt at raising up the maverick, John McCain, before beating him down in the general election.

The mainstream media knows that if Chris Christie is the nominee the conservative base of the Republican party will stay home and that will guarantee a Hillary Clinton presidency, and that is their endgame.

Are we going to fall for this once again? It is not going to be easy to beat the chosen Republican because surely people like Karl Rove will pour millions of dollars into a Christie campaign in order to keep a true conservative from winning the nomination, preferring to protect the establishment rather than conservative values.

Don’t believe the hype, for that is all this is. We have to nip this in the bud or else we will be stuck with Chris Christie and if that happens you can count me in on being one of the people who decide not to check a box next to either of the “big two” names on the ballot. I am tired of this game.

The whole process of choosing a candidate is flawed. The process is archaic and plays into a media that wants to control the process. Sorry Steve but New Hampshire and Iowa should not play the role they do. They only feed into the media’s appetite for sensational stories.

No need to apologize, I understand why so many people do not like NH having such a big role in the process, but the primary season around here is very exciting. Candidates get to meet the people up close and personal before they are on the national stage. They often go to little towns and communities and meet people one on one. It give people the chance to talk to the candidates as individuals. The problem is that it is so hyped up now that it has lost some of its true meaning.

I fear it is entirely possible that Rove and the GOP will manipulate the primaries to get someone like Christie or Jeb Bush as their candidate. Only we bloggers and the Tea Parties have a chance to stop them.

I think Bush is who he is going to push, but there is no doubt that his goal is to protect the establishment and the incumbents.

It is time to elect somebody who has actually run something in their lives, not a career politician who has no clue how the private sector works.

Eh, the problem with that, as Mr. Cain made eminently clear, is that those who’ve found success in the private sector have no clue about how a republican form of government works. Businessmen are dictators. While they need to deal with politics (we all do) in their businesses, the time comes when the boss issues an edict and others must either fall in line or fall by the wayside.

An interesting point, but that experience is still valuable.

The experience can help, but which GOP standout today hasany? Or which or the candidates of yesteryear?

President GWBush had real-world experience running businesses – he ran three oil companies into the grouns, and then as managing partner of the Rangers, he seized privately-held land for the club and then traded away Manny Sosa.

There is nobody in the Republican party, the party is going to fracture and burst. You haven’t been around in awhile but I have become much more of a equal opportunity basher. (I still hit the Dems harder, old habits are hard to break, but the Republicans no longer get a free ride.) This is why myself and several others are trying to get the New Federalist Party off the ground but it is slow going.
As for Bush, he gave us the PATRIOT Act, what more needs to be said?

Not voting means the people who do vote wins. Who votes? Unions and special interest groups, and we know they control the left.
My crystal ball is as clear as mud, but I am sick of loosing. I will vote for damn near anyone but Hill-of-beans.

No it is not a war against the left or the right. They are colliding sides to make it appear like we are all divided. The real deep issue goes back to England and our Presidents all but 2 have been related to the Queen! Who do you vote for now?

My copy of the Constitution is kind of dogeared – I can’t find the section that says the President’s relatives have a prior claim on real property in the US.

I mean, let’s face it – we’re ALL related to the Queen of England, and to Vladimir Putin, and Fidel Castro, if you believe that we can all trace out ancenstry bak to Adam and Eve.

A person’s vote and who they vote for is determined by many factors, some petty, some grave. Neither the Queen, nor any other genealogy are factors in my vote. I go with William F. Buckley on this: the most conservative person WHO CAN WIN. As I said, I am sick of loosing, and I am sick of having the country “fundamentally transformed” by the left.

Bruce, of course you’re right – geneology and conspiracy theories only dilute our votes.

The thing is, when presented with theoretical statements, I think more Americans lean right than left, but when confronted by practical reality, I think more Americans will support the liberal solution.

And the thing is, liberal solutions often are the best to at least some problems. Look at homelessness in Utah . . .

I guess I have to agree with you on that because we are often told that America is a center-right country yet the people have chosen liberal solutions in recent years. Of course I disagree with you about liberal solutions often being the best solutions.
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a happy New Year.

ROFLMAO . . . so it all boils down to “Oh, if you knew the things I know . . .” And this is your support for claiming that the President’s relations have claim to our real property?

Sorry, I haven’t seen a single credible thing you’ve said.

Here on the left coast in sunny California where liberals/progressives hold every single state level office, where the liberals/progressives control both legislative branches with veto proof majorities, where our 2 U.S. Senators are far left loons, AND my office and warehouse are across the street where the biggest social services organization in norther California which draws hundreds of vagrants a day to hang out, block the street, litter, do drugs, fight, and wait for a handout I have to say, I don’t see any GOOD liberal solutions out here.
I certainly welcome God’s blessing, and I would add may God have mercy on our wretched souls.
