Rahm Emanuel cites the Emancipation Proclamation to defend Barack Obama’s Executive Orders

February 24, 2014

While stating that he supports Barack Obama’s Executive Orders “1,000 percent” former White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, cited the Emancipation Proclamation as an example of executive action:

“These are not equal, but the Emancipation Proclamation was an executive action.

Technically he is correct, however he conveniently forgets two very important facts: First; the Emancipation Proclamation, contrary to popular belief, did not free all the slaves, only the slaves in the states which were in rebellion against the United States government. Slave-holding states which remained loyal were allowed to keep their slaves under this order. And more importantly, second; while this was an executive action it was taken during a time of war using war powers and Abraham Lincoln and the Republicans in the Federal government knew this order could not be the law of the land once the war was over without a constitutional amendment.

The Emancipation Proclamation did not become the law of the land simply because Abraham Lincoln said so and once the war was over the Federal government passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to Constitutionally create the law which Abraham Lincoln so wanted when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Yes – the EP was a PR tool Lincoln used to sway public opinion in England, whose textile mills depended heavily on Southern cotton. It could seriously hamper the war effort if it supported the confederacy. Lincoln felt that if he could influence public opinion there, England might remain neutral.

In the EP, Lincoln famously “freed the slaves where he couldn’t and didn’t free them where he could.” The reality is a bit more complex – he couldn’t free the slaves anywhere. While it’s probable that legislation could have ended slavery without resort to Constitutional Amendment, I’m sure the north wanted a more dramatic and permanent declaration outlawing the institution – after all, it’s far easier to overturn a law than an amendment.

A much better example would have been President Truman’s order desegregating the military. I’m sure that in its time, EO 9981 had more than a few Republican and racist heads spinning. Too bad Emanuel didn’t call me – I’d have given him the EO number and everything.

Take good care and may God bless us all!

Oh no, no, no, no, no. You stupid, stupid, stupid people. HOW, how, how could you have worked for the highest office in our Country when you know NOTHING????

The president is the head of the EXECUTIVE BRANCH ONLY. He has authority over the EXECUTIVE BRANCH ONLY. He may set POLICY for the EXECUTIVE BRANCH ONLY.

For the love of pete! I’m watching it, right before my very eyes and I can do nothing.

I will leave Lincoln out of my comment because he almost destroyed our Country and he DID do immeasurable damage to our Constitutional Republic and our federation of sovereign states. Lincoln gets a pass tonight because I just don’t feel like bringing up all the unconstitutional things he did. I DID read a nice little article listing several things Lincoln ‘accomplished’ during his term. ‘Destroying the Lincoln Myths’ Dave Benner http://www.davebenner.com/index.php/entry/destroying-the-lincoln-myths

By the by, Steve….I STILL am not getting any notices of NEW comments on your articles. I don’t get the ‘howdy, you recently….’ notice to subscribe to the article. I’m ONLY getting a notice for your NEW articles. 😦

Republicans like to remind people that Lincoln was a Republican for obvious reasons but they like to forget his abuses of the Constitution and his expansion of the power of the Federal government.
I am assuming you checked the ‘notify me of new comments box’ when you left a comment? I will contact WordPress to see if they can help.

Yes, you have assumed correctly. 😉

This only happens on your articles, too. I wondered if there is a limit on the number of articles to which one may subscribe, so I deleted all but the most recent subscriptions. To no avail, I am still not being notified of all the brilliant comments made by you and your readers.

I figured you did but had to ask anyway. 🙂 I will send an email to wordpress to see if they can look into it. One more question, are the updates being caught in your email spam folder for some reason?
