Democrats move to block a second Obama nominee since Harry Reid invoked the “nuclear option”
When Harry Reid invoked the nuclear option to end the filibustering of many of Barack Obama’s nominees to government positions it was regarded by the liberals, and the president, that this would give him to opportunity appoint basically whomever he wanted despite the opposition no matter how radical they might be.
But a funny thing happened on the way to confirmation; first the Democrats, with the support of nearly unanimous Republican opposition, blocked Debo Adegbile from being appointed to the Justice Department because he was too radical, and now the president cannot count on enough support from the Democrats to get his nominee for Surgeon General– Vivek Murthy–through the Democratic controlled Senate.
The White House is facing its second Democratic rebellion in less than two weeks over a nomination that’s drawn quick opposition from rural Democratic senators. Obama has enough trouble with the GOP, which is nearly united in opposing Vivek Murthy’s nomination to become surgeon general, but it’s his own party that is again in position to derail another presidential pick.
Democratic Senate aides estimated on Monday that from eight to 10 Democrats may oppose Murthy’s nomination if the vote were to be held soon, mostly because of his left-leaning views on gun policy, which have attracted opposition from the National Rifle Association. An aide closely following the nomination described a vote for Murthy as carrying “very little political or policy gain but plenty of downside.”
“We’ve worked the nomination. We know that there are several Democrats who have issues,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois on Monday. “It would be problematic if it came up quickly. We need to work with some of our members.”
Could it possibly be the case that Barack Obama, emboldened by Harry Reid’s actions, has actually over-reached to the point where even the Democrats do not agree with what he is doing?
I hardly think that is the case, and in fact I believe this can be summed up this part of the quote above: “very little political or policy gain but plenty of downside.”
In other words, this is an election year so the Democrats have to appear to be more moderate than they really are so they cannot afford to vote in favor of these radical nominees at this point in time. But once the election is over all bets are off. This is just one more reason why the Senate must not remain in control of the Democrats after this November’s elections.
They are simply biding their time…..

They should have known the nuclear option would end up biting them in the butt.
We will see more and more dems trying to distance themselves from Obama leading up to the midterms.
Hopefully people are smart enough to see this as an attempt to save their own political lives and don’t vote for them.

Yeah, the Dems realize the president is unpopular so they have to distance themselves from him for now. I hope people see what this is all about.

Have no fear. The voters are dumb as rocks so surely they can be convinced their politicians are acting in the best interest of. “The American people.”
