Darrell Issa accuses Elijah Cummings of colluding with the IRS

April 9, 2014

According to Darrell Issa, emails his office received last week suggest that Elijah Cummings many have colluded with the IRS. This story states that Darrell Issa is saying these emails may show that Elijah Cummings may have prompted the targeting of ‘True The Vote.’

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has accused the panel’s top Democrat of prompting the Internal Revenue Service in 2012 to target a conservative organization applying for non-profit status.

However, this National Review article states that the timing of the emails suggest that Elijah Cummings’s communications with the IRS lead one to believe it did not contribute to the IRS’s decision to target ‘True The Vote.’

The correspondence does not indicate whether the IRS’ scrutiny of True the Vote’s application for tax exemption was prompted by Cummings’s inquiries about the group and the timing of the correspondence suggests it was not, but instead that Cummings may have modeled his inquiries on those the IRS had already made.

This is a breaking story and we do not know all of the details at this point, but as of right now I am inclined to believe the first article I linked to may have mischaracterized what Darrell Issa’s accusation against Elijah Cummings was.

One thing appears to be certain at this time; Elijah Cummings was in contact with the IRS, and the first article I linked to suggests that Elijah Cummings was able to get information from the IRS which Darrell Issa has been unsuccessfully trying to get from the IRS. If this is true and Elijah Cummings was able to get information from the IRS that Darrell Issa had been requesting and he did not share it with Mr. Issa than yes, it appears as if there was some collusion.

“The IRS and the Oversight Minority made numerous requests for virtually identical information from True the Vote, raising concerns that the IRS improperly shared protected taxpayer information with Rep. Cummings’ staff,” a statement from the Oversight panel reads.

This might just explain why Elijah Cummings has been trying so hard to get the investigation into the IRS dropped. If the first article is correct about Darrell Issa’s accusation he had better have some hard proof or else he is treading dangerously close to defamation of character himself.

With the Congress prepared to hold a Contempt vote against Lois Lerner tomorrow we can expect it to get very interesting indeed. Stay tuned…..

UPDATE: I just read the Oversight Committee’s website and it does look like Darrell Issa is claiming that Elijah Cummings contact with the IRS did lead to additional scrutiny of ‘True The Vote.’

Here is part of the press release:

“Although you have previously denied that your staff made inquiries to the IRS about conservative organization True the Vote that may have led to additional agency scrutiny, communication records between your staff and IRS officials – which you did not disclose to Majority Members or staff – indicates otherwise,” wrote the Chairman and five Subcommittee Chairmen of the Oversight Committee.  “As the Committee is scheduled to consider a resolution holding Ms. Lerner, a participant in responding to your communications that you failed to disclose, in contempt of Congress, you have an obligation to fully explain your staff’s undisclosed contacts with the IRS.”

Very good but… The House Ways and Means Committee has forwarded recommendation for criminal charges to be made against Lois Lerner, and now, it is in Holder’s lap. Doubt if anything gets done Holder is a criminal (Fast & Furious) and a Traitor. He will not prosecute Lerner because Lerner is holding out. From what I have seen, I have the feeling that if she is prosecuted, she will burn Obama and a few others. Criminals do that sort of thing, and try to have sentences reduced in exchange for doing a Burn Job.

You are 100% right. Eric Holder has stated he as great discretion in enforcing the laws and there is no way in hell he would ever go after Lois Lerner.

PS: Rat Time, and a Burn Job, are two entirely different things. You can pretty much get the drift of each of them, and probably be correct.

Well, Holder has already been playing the race for the treatment he recieves fromGOP congresmen. Cummings will surely play that card as well.

Let us forget, for the moment, that Elija Cummings and the IRS may have colluded against True The Vote. My question is why or how Cummings thinks he has the authority to question a particular group about their activities in the first place? He is not a prosecutor or investigator. Why was he asking True The Vote questions about their organization at all? Does being a member of Congress give him free rein to questions private citizens about their activities?

I think not. And after all of that, then we see he may have joined with the IRS to further question True The Vote. It would seem to me there is a significant overreach of power and authority, both by the IRS and by Elijah Cummings.

Those are great questions Larry. Even if there was no collusion here why was he contacting the IRS in the first place? I think we are beginning to understand why he so desperately wants this investigation shut down.
