California Democrats kill a bill which would ban sex-selective abortions

May 14, 2014

I do not care which side of the abortion issue you are on, this story should be troubling. Democrats in California have killed a bill which would have banned abortions simply based on the sex of the baby. Here is more:

The Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (AB 2336) ran into opposition by all of the Democrats on the committee, who saw the bill as a prelude to broader abortion restrictions, according to a report from LifeNews.com. Instead, Democrats introduced a resolution to condemn sex-selection abortion–but not to outlaw it.

The bill was introduced on May 6th by Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield), who said in her opening testimony that “the U.N. estimates that upwards of 200 million girls around the world have been aborted merely because they were ‘the wrong gender.'” She explained that countries like India and China are dominated by a male-child mentality, with mothers preferring future working men and family providers over the “burden” of baby girls.

“This is the real war on women,” Grove told the committee. “Girls are being killed simply for being girls and it’s happening right here in California and not just Third World Nations.

I have to admit that I have no idea how many babies are being aborted in California based on sex. Shannon Grove claims that people from countries where this practice is outlawed are coming to California to abort female babies and she wanted to show a video as evidence but was denied:

The Assemblywoman wanted to show a short video as evidence at the hearing, detailing a young woman’s journey from India to California to receive a sex-selection abortion, but the Assembly turned down her request.

Grove then reiterated: “It’s outlawed in India, but allowed in California, and people from other countries are coming to California because it’s taxpayer-funded.”

But honestly, does the number really matter when you think about what the California Democrats voted against? To me this shows an unbelievable lack of respect for human life and a callousness and cold-heartedness that I just cannot wrap my mind around.

I guess a woman’s right to chose is absolute and this gives a woman the right to determine what sex her child should be. If she finds the sex of the baby to be unacceptable she can terminate the pregnancy and keep trying until she gets the baby she wants.

I guess I am just living in the dark ages and unbeknownst to me I have been an active participant in the war on women.

I have to wonder what is truly the reason for this law? It seems like it is more like grandstanding by the Republicans. Think about it. There are far more effective tools at their disposal such as unnecessary and suffocating regulation of the procedure that can be used to ban ALL abortions regardless of the circumstance.

If there is a means for Republicans to ban all abortions and they fail to take those measures could it be that they are not really interested in banning all abortions, but rather the ones they find most offensive, such as sex-selective abortions?
