Thesaurus lists ‘right-winger,’ ‘traditionalist,’ and ‘redneck’ as synonyms for ‘obstructionist’
I am not going to spend much time on this but here is something I found today as I was browsing the internet that I found a little interesting: According to this story the website thesaurus.com has listed as synonyms to the term ‘obstructionist’ the terms ‘right-winger,’ ‘traditionalist,’ ‘rightist,’ ‘unprogressive,’ and ‘redneck.’
While at the same time the website lists ‘left-wing,’ ‘progressive,’ and ‘liberal’ as being antonyms to the term ‘obstructionist.’ I went to the website and have verified it is true.
One can make the argument if one so desires that in today’s political culture, with a Democratic president, that this is true. People who oppose the president are trying to stop policies with which they disagree. That used to be called ‘politics’ at one point in time.
However one has to wonder if in the future a Republican is ever again the president of the United States and the Democratic party is opposing his agenda if this website will reverse the synonyms and antonyms. It would only be fair, right?
Of course I do not expect that to happen for as George Orwell once wrote; the revolution will be complete when the language is perfect…

Control the language, control the thinking.

Remember when hippies were the counter-culture. Now, we constitutionalists are the counter-culture.

The hippies made a name for themselves by opposing the government but now that they are controlling the government they do not like people opposing it. Funny how that works…

Yeah, I wondered about this too when I saw the news story, but it makes sense, linguistically speaking. A thesaurus relies upon the definition, and the definition of the word “obstructionist” includes “opposed to change”. The complaint against liberals is about being in favor of reckless changes. Conservatives oppose and resist (therefore try to obstruct) that sort of change.

That is an interesting take on it.

In our world beset by liberals setting out to legislate the destruction of our very foundations obstructionism is a most honorable endeavor. Put that in your thesaurus.

For some reason this made me laugh a little reading the title. The absurdity.
Unfortunately, when the insane (tagging Petermc3’s asylum) think themselves wise, then everyone else who disagrees are foolish and ‘obstructions’ to them fulfilling their Utopian LSD experience reality. Good name for a group “The Obstructionist”!
