New Hampshire GOP on the defensive after Scott Brown ad attacks Jeanne Shaheen on immigration reform

August 2, 2014

Scott Brown has been all over the radio and television airwaves here in New Hampshire with a new ad targeting Jeanne Shaneen and Barack Obama on illegal immigration.

  Here is the ad:

This ad is rather innocuous but it now has the New Hampshire GOP on the defensive because Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte has cast her lot with the McCainite faction of the Republican party on immigration reform,  so her position on this issue is not all that much different than that of Jeanne Shaheen’s or Barack Obama’s positions. Democrats were quick to point this out and the Republicans have been forced to counter.

Here is more on this story:

When Republican U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown attacked Sen. Jeanne Shaheen in an ad this week and recently on the campaign trail for supporting President Obama’s immigration policies, the Democrats returned fire by pointing out that both Shaheen and Sen. Kelly Ayotte backed the same immigration reform bill in 2013.

“With Scott Brown struggling, both his campaign and the state Republican Committee are launching another desperate and dishonest attack. But this one isn’t just aimed at New Hampshire’s Jeanne Shaheen — they are bashing the bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill, backed by Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte too,” the state Democratic Party wrote in a press release.

Here is how the NHGOP responded in defense of Senator Ayotte:

The NHGOP points out that while Ayotte favored an amendment to build 350 miles of reinforced, double-layered border fencing in June of 2013, Shaheen voted against it.

Also, the NHGOP points out, while Shaheen opposed sending 6,000 National Guard troops to the border in May 2010, Ayotte, then a candidate for the Senate, issued a statement on her Facebook page supporting it.

Republicans also note that Ayotte opposed President Barack Obama’s action in 2012 that protected young illegal immigrants from deportation, while Shaheen said it was “a step in the right direction” and “the right thing to do.”

Neither side is being 100% honest here but the fact remains that while there are some differences between Senators Ayotte and Shaheen they both support the comprehensive immigration bill which will grant amnesty to thousands of illegal aliens.

It should also be noted here that Senator Ayotte has endorsed Scott Brown in the Republican party, and with the former Massachusetts Senator having voted with the Democrats 70% of the time it calls into question how he will really vote on this issue if he is lucky enough to beat Senator Shaheen in November…

    Steve,
Is Scott Brown truly the unprincipled and unreliable carpetbagger that he would appear to be from comments on the left and the right? Please enlighten us non-New Hampshire residents. Enquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

Scott Brown was born in Maine and has family in New Hampshire. He lived in Mass for years and only moved to New Hampshire to run for political office, so in my opinion he is a carpetbagger. Although with family in New Hampshire and with a vacation home in the state he was not totally removed from New Hampshire.
I don’t think he is unprincipled, he just isn’t as conservative as people think he is so that make him an unreliable vote for the Republicans. It turns out the 70% I quoted above was for the year 2011 alone so I would guess the actual number is a little lower over his term.

Brown voted 91% of the time as State rep. in MA with the Socialists. His record in the U.S. Senate was so bad that MA Conservatives voted him out after a few years. He said last year before the public flak against Amnesty gained steam) that he would have voted FOR the Senate Amnesty bill had he been in office. Now he’s railing against it in a desperate move for Conservative Bob Smith’s supporters’ votes.
