New York Times: Harry Reid “seethed” at a disengaged Barack Obama

August 19, 2014

According to the New York Times Barack Obama held a meeting in June about the situation in Iraq and during this meeting Harry Reid took the opportunity to discuss the Republicans holding up Barack Obama’s ambassador nominees. According to the same article the president responded “You and Mitch work it out.”

This reported did not sit well with Harry Reid, who apparently “seethed” for the rest of the meeting:

With Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, sitting a few feet away, Mr. Reid complained that Senate Republicans were spitefully blocking the confirmation of dozens of Mr. Obama’s nominees to serve as ambassadors. He expected that the president would back him up and urge Mr. McConnell to relent.

Mr. Obama quickly dismissed the matter.

“You and Mitch work it out,” Mr. Obama said coolly, cutting off any discussion.

Mr. Reid seethed quietly for the rest of the meeting, according to four separate accounts provided by people who spoke with him about it. After his return to the Capitol that afternoon, Mr. Reid told other senators and his staff members that he was astonished by how disengaged the president seemed. After all, these were Mr. Obama’s own ambassadors who were being blocked by Mr. McConnell, and Secretary of State John Kerry had been arguing for months that getting them installed was an urgent necessity for the administration.

The White House responded to this story by stating the following:

Regarding the meeting with Mr. Reid, White House aides said that the senator had caught the president off guard by abruptly shifting the conversation away from a sober discussion of the security threats in Iraq.

That is all very well and good, but I seem to remember a time during the presidential campaign of 2008 when John McCain, in an obviously politically motivated move, suspended his campaign to fly back to Washington to address the economic situation. He urged then Senator Barack Obama to do the same and to also cancel a scheduled debate. Barack Obama refused while basically stating that a president needs to be able to multitask

“Presidents are going to have to deal with more than one thing at a time. It’s not necessary for us to think that we can only do one thing and suspend everything else.”

I remember thinking at the time that this was a brilliant rebuke of John McCain for it gave Barack Obama the political victory that John McCain has sought in the first place. And I still feel that way, but what happened? Now Barack Obama cannot multitask?

But I got a little off-topic. If you read the article I linked to above you will find several instances where Democrats are frustrated with Barack Obama for not being more involved. And there are many vulnerable Democrats who are seeking to distance themselves from a president who is growing more unpopular by the day.

Much has been written about the civil war brewing in the Republican party and it is true–there is a battle ensuing over the heart and soul of the Republican party–however not all is rainbows and flowers within the Democratic party either, it just is not getting as much play in the mainstream media for obvious reasons.

Maybe Reid will tire of being Obama’s lapdog. With any luck we may be able to make him have to move his office come January.

I like to think so but the Democratic leadership has a habit of keeping this kind of thing under wraps for the most part, and with the media leery about writing about it it will probably be wiped away.

Could it be that Reid’s upset at him for not declaring Martial Law at the Bundy’s Ranch, resulting in ‘his deal’ being exposed and fall thru. Revealing how it really had nothing to do w/ back taxes or saving the endangered desert Tortoise – that were out right killed to make way – rather something in the making for years: solar panel project?
The criminal judges aren’t being appointed ‘fast enough’ for the political criminals to get that wave of favor for their big money plans with Foreign investors. a.k.a. obama just signed some EO’s – have to see what those were about – more anti-American decisions, in-between golf games. Wonder if his friend ‘Love’ is there this time?

I did not make that connection but I know how angry Reid was when that standoff came to an end so maybe he is mad at Obama for not finishing what the Feds started out there.

Very early in Obama’s first term, it was said he won because he was anything anyone wanted him to be.So little was really know about him. He had been so careful to craft his chameleon image that even Reed was surprised when he found out that Obama is the empty suit we knew he is.
