Open thread for Sunday, September 21: Body of an American

September 21, 2014

Here is the open thread for Sunday, September 21st. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week we covered another eight stories at America’s Watchtower. Did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure you do not miss another post. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!?

Yesterday we went to the ‘Highland Games and Festival’ at Loon Mountain and had a great time, so in keeping with the spirit here is The Pogues doing ‘Body of an American’ for your musical selection of the week.

But fifteen minutes later
We had our first taste of whiskey
There was uncles giving lectures
On ancient Irish history
The men all started telling jokes
And the women they got frisky
At five o’clock in the evening
Every bastard there was piskey

  Enjoy:

The biggest question I have about this whole thing, and it was mentioned int he article you linked to, is about the regime threatening the families if they tried to raise money to save their sons. The actual video of the beheading might be fake but I do believe these two men have been killed by ISIS.

Yes I think they’re dead too – murdered – but a plus for the Regime, the videos ‘worked’ enough to help their war agenda and that’s their goal (no matter what it takes). Isis ‘just following their orders’ – being paid as they go.

That is certainly true, never let a good crisis go to waste…even if you have to create one.

See if this makes sense. Maybe, just maybe, Obama helped us Christians this week. I have been debating on line as to why Christianity is so much different than Islam when it comes to violence and killing. And the standard reply is always the same old ‘Christians have killed more people than anyone else in history’ and they go on to site everything from the crusades to Tim McVeigh.
Well now, after Obamas speech, we can say “those weren’t Christians” who did that killing.
Now, I don’t for one second claim killing wasn’t both done and sanctioned in the name of Christianity. I have studied my own Catholic church for too long to believe otherwise. But for the extremist to say that Hitler was raised Christian, therefore all death attributed to him was done by Christians is absurd. But why? Well, because they weren’t Christians in any meaningful sense of the term. Christians can show two thousand years of writings that says Christians just don’t act like that. A song we sing is “They know we are Christians by our love”. Anything else isn’t Christian.
If Obama can proclaim that ISIS isn’t Muslim, then I can proclaim that evil deeds weren’t done in the name of Christianity.
I know I am walking a very fine line here. The left hates logic, and that is what I am trying to get to. And as I said, I know the history of violence throughout Christendom. And I believe that almost everything Obama says is done for political gain. But even a broken clock is right twice a day. And it is possible to objectively state that a group isn’t behaving according to the title they claim.
So help me here, where am I wrong?

I don’t think you are wrong. It might be true that at one time Christians acted in much the same way as Muslims do today, but that was long ago and it is no longer the case, whereas we see many cases of Muslims having not come into the 21st century. Hitler have have been raised a Christian but for the left to claim he was using Christianity to eradicate the Jews is simply absurd. Just because he was raised a Christian does not mean he was a Christian.

Some religions evolve and some don’t.
