Lost energy generation due to new EPA regulations seven times higher than original estimate

October 11, 2014

Last week I was greeted with the news that Unitil customers in New Hampshire  will see an average increase in their electricity bill of $42 a month. Of course I was not surprised by this because I remembered that this was what Barack Obama, the self-proclaimed middle class warrior, promised to do to me.

The scary part is this is just the beginning and according to this article a new report shows the loss of generating capacity due to impending EPA regulations is going to be seven times higher than the original estimate.

Power plants generating 72 gigawatts (GW) of electricity in 37 states have either closed or are scheduled to shut their doors to comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, according to the Institute for Energy Research (IER).

The loss of generating capacity is “over seven times the amount originally predicted by EPA modeling,” IER’s updated report, released October 7, noted.

“Originally, EPA calculated that only 9.5 GW of electrical generating capacity would close as a result of its MATS (Mercury and Air Toxics Standard) and CSAPR (Cross State Air Pollution Rule) rules,” the report stated.

“Before President Obama’s newly proposed [carbon dioxide] regulations on existing power plants even begin to take effect, however, it is clear that actual number will now be much higher,” the report continued, adding that the closures will take “enough electrical generation capacity to reliably power 44.7 million homes – or every home in every state west of the Mississippi, excluding Texas” off the grid.

And, also as promised, 94% of the plants which shut down were coal-fired plants. Coal plants provide the nation with 1/5th of its power and this loss is going to have a devastating effect on the price of energy, as my next electric bill is going to show. And we ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

It looks as if Barack Obama’s agenda is moving forward much more quickly than he could have possibly hoped for in his wildest dreams…

Yeah and we are replacing the lost mercury with mercury laden light bulbs and solar panels from China. Nice one Barack.

Ha, I didn’t even think of that one! Mercury is bad for the environment so we have to use light bulbs with Mercury in them in order to save the environment. Makes prefect sense, right?

Steve, any idea how many of those energy efficient bulbs end up in the landfills and leach into the ground? How many people do you know or have heard of that take them to the proper places to dispose of them? I cannot read by them, they hurt my eyes and hopefully I have enough of the GOOD bulbs to get me thru until there are sane people that start producing them again in the USA. I am really getting tired of people telling me what is best for me, I will be the judge of that!!!

That is a great question Lou. I googled it and could not find an answer but I would bet that most people simply throw them away. And I would also bet that many people do not even realize you aren’t supposed to throw them away.

The EPA has it all figured out: http://www.epa.gov/osw/hazard/wastetypes/universal/lamps/
Once again massive amount of reading (boring and time consuming): plus these mercury bulbs are to be ‘recycled’. If you break one in your home:
‘To safely clean up and dispose of broken fluorescents, leave the room and allow it to air out for 10 minutes. Turn off central heat and air immediately (and for several hours after cleanup) to avoid spreading the mercury vapors that are released from broken fluorescent bulbs and tubes.
Do not vacuum the broken fragments or dust. Instead, scoop up larger pieces with cardboard or stiff paper, and use duct tape to collect smaller fragments and powder. Wipe down the area with a damp paper towel and place all cleanup materials and debris into a glass jar or double-plastic bag. If your hazardous household waste facility does not accept broken bulbs, then seal the jar or bag and dispose of it with regular household trash.’

Zip, all the more reason NOT to use those damn bulbs! It is hard enough to clean up a broken bulb, let alone go to that trouble. I read that somewhere when they first came out. I am so SURE that people are doing all of this….NOT!

We have some rental houses and this last one that was put up for rent after we renovated it had a month bill and then an additional 9 days into the next month. I had to look closer at it because of seeing 2 separate billings and found alot of “stuff” added in I had not paid attention to before. It might be a couple bucks here or there, but it all starts adding up. I am going to call and find out exactly WHAT they are all for. I am sure I am paying for someones bill that cannot or will not pay for it themselves. At any rate, there is a shit load of “extras” added on. This is AMEREN-Illinois, but would be willing to bet it is on most of the others bills, as well.
Steve, we were told from the get go that the electric bills would necessarily sky rocket, so if we were paying attention (alot of us were) we would not be surprised by any of this that is happening. I feel bad for the coal states, that is their lively hood, but the unions stuck by the head BOSSES and now alot are out of work. So much for being loyal union members, they had the screws put to them, big time. It is not about them, it is about the big guys making sure they always have big bucks. Us little peons are useful for something, I guess!

I feel bad for them also but only up to a point because Obama did not hide his agenda on this so they should have known what he was going to do. But being the good little collectivists union members are they just did what the union leaders told them to. Sometimes you have to find out the hard way but unfortunately we are al going to pay the price.

I have a brother in law and his wife that will NOT speak to one of my other brother in laws and his wife because one is union and the other is a DOCTOR, oh no! Actually a Chiropractor with his own business. He said something his brother did not like, so there is a feud going on….actually pretty childish, but guess that is how it goes. I stay out of it, he has been brain washed into thinking the union heads are only doing what is right for the workers,,,,hahahaha!

Yeah, you are better off staying out of it, hopefully neither one of them asks you to take sides. It is amazing how these union people are brainwashed, I hear them from time to time as well and they just don’t realize their union leaders are only in it for the money as well.

This was one of my personal favorites. They think they can just force us out of our vehicles. Easy for them to say, they drive what they want. What will it take for Americans to tell this government to butt the hell out of our business? I am really, really tired of all the restrictions and demands coming down from an Administration that WE are supposed to be telling what to do!

Lou, I have to agree with you. He is passing down all these restrictions for the environment but allowing all our borders to remain open to let any disease or terrorist in…Yip, make sense huh??

Lorra, this administration is cold and calculated and there are alot of people that think they are inexperienced and/or stupid. That will prove to be a big mistake thinking that way. If anyone thinks that the main players are IN the White House, they would probably be wrong. There are bigger “fish” than Obama and his friends. Closing the borders is not on the list of “to do” things.

The evil empire … EPA. I think a.k.a obama was clued in by the ‘powers that be’, some of the things they would funnel thru him to do and this was one of them. Little by little making things harder for American citizens. Another brick in their Agenda.
