NIH official says budget cuts are not to blame for the lack on an Ebola vaccine

October 19, 2014

Whether you  like it or not the Ebola “crisis” has predictably turned into a political issue ahead of the 2014 election. Republicans were quick to jump on this issue in order to highlight Barack Obama’s lack of leadership and the Democrats jumped on this to show the American people that Republican cuts kill.

This is not entirely true, as I pointed out in this post, because in reality the CDC received an 8% increase in spending. they do not have a budget problem, they have a priorities problem.

Of course this did not stop NIH head Francis Collins, or Democrats for that matter, from blaming the alleged Republican budget cuts–which passed the Democratic controlled Senate and was signed into law by Barack Obama–for the lack of an Ebola vaccine:

NIH has been working on Ebola vaccines since 2001. It’s not like we suddenly woke up and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we should have something ready here,’” he said. “Frankly, if we had not gone through our 10-year slide in research support, we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this that would’ve gone through clinical trials and would have been ready.”

But now another official in the NIH stated that budget cuts are not to blame for the lack of a vaccine. Here is what he had to say:

    Nothing like being ‘set up’.

under “baseline budgeting” an 8% increase is a 2% cut if you were expecting a 10% increase.

that’s how messed up this stuff is.

Only in the world of politics could an increase be considered a cut! I wonder how many people are out there that complain about budget cuts understand that nothing really gets cut.

This is a pretty good reason to vote a straight Republican ticket. There are some pretty crummy Republicans, but they’re still better than any Democrat I’ve seen in a long time. We have arguably the most corrupt administration in over 100 years, possibly in our entire history.

Integrity and reality mean nothing to them so long as they stay in power.

Yeah, as long as they are allowed to get away with it they are going to keep pushing he envelope to see how far they can go. I don’t know if winning the Senate will stop Obama from doing what he wants through EO, but I do know not taking it will embolden him over the next two years.
