Open thread for Sunday, November 16th: Hell/Zoot Suit Riot
Here is the open thread for Sunday, November 16th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.
This was a busy week at America’s Watchtower as we discussed another 18 topics, largely due to Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber. Did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure you do not miss another post. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.
In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.
The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!?
I am going to throw a major curve-ball at you guys with week’s two-for musical selection. If you listened to alternative radio as I did in the early ’90’s you might remember that there was a brief revival of swing/jazz music.
There were two bands back then who probably were the prime benefactors–The Squirrel Nut Zippers and The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies–so here is ‘Hell’ by the former and ‘Zoot Suit Riot’ from the latter.
Enjoy:

I have to admit I travel over to PBS and catch Lawrence Welk every so often. Memories I guess. It was a family commitment to sit around the T.V. on a Saturday night. Then there was Guy Lombardo on New Year’s Eve. Guess I am getting old!

I could have written what you just put, guess we are all getting old! Does that make us wiser?

Oh yea, I am right there with you guys. But as a kid, I felt it was more of a Family “punishment” sitting there hearing the old …a one, and a two.

Bunker and Bruce, I am 60, my husband is 58, we have elderly neighbors that go on the “bus tours” to Branson, Missouri and have asked us to go. We went on a 1 day trip to do a paddle boat ride with dinner, from 6am to 8pm. I have decided I am NOT that old yet to not want to drive ourselves, but ride a bus full of “senior citizens” (yes I am know I am one), I guess it is an acquired taste to want to do that, have everything planned down to when you stop to go to the bathroom. You also have silly games on the bus. I am a jeans wearing, sports car driving Nana and I refuse to succumb to OLD AGE! We watched Lawrence Welk, as well, at a certain time in the evening, there would be the Indian in a bullseye that would come on and say the tv station is going off the air, no watching infomercials all night back then. For some reason, I do not think we are as OLD at 60 as our parents were, what do you think?

Well Lou, I will be 62 in 2 months, and I can’t figure out who that old guy in the mirror is, because I am still doing most of the crazy things I used to do. I hadn’t thought of it, but I think you are right Lou. Our parents had an older mindset and different expectations. We were the “counter culture” then, and still see ourselves that way.

Maybe that will keep us young in the mind! I have a brother that is 69, (I do not see him as any older than 21), he asked me what the hell happened to all the years and how the hell did he turn into looking like Dad? I just had to laugh at him, because he is a carbon copy of Dad. Maybe we thought we would never age, but age we have I will be 61 in 3 months, it is coming faster each year. Remember, if you remember nothing else I print on this blog, “never keep a box of kleenex in your car” that is a sure sign that you are at geriatric stage!!!!

Wow Lou! “the box of kleenex” LOL. I promise, here and now to never repeat that behavior.1

I am still waiting to vote for the next “Champagne Lady” ! and the next Lennon Sister to arrive on the scene!! No, we are not old!!

Lawrence Welk? Who is that? Just kidding, I am slightly younger than you guys but I do remember watching him as a young boy. Of course at that time I had no choice…
Lou, I have to say that I have not yet started carrying Kleenex in the car, but that is not a bad idea!

Steve, It seems that every old person car I have ever been in or looked into has a box of kleenex, hence my warning. It must signal the “old person gene” or something! I refuse to do it.

Yeah, but you probably don’t need to because you have them in your pocketbook anyway. 😉

Actually no and I do not carry a pocketbook, that is so “yesterday”!

We are a diverse group of people on this blog, with alot of different tastes in music. It is always good to hear something I have not heard before, guess we are still not too set in our ways to enjoy what others listen to. Thanks for these two songs.

I loved those SDL and I have not heard those before. I do remember that Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats also got in the action by creating his own orchestra.

I like the fast beat of both of your videos, Steve, I also like the Dixieland Jazz sound. Straight Jazz is an acquired taste, but swing, I cannot think of anyone that would not like it and start moving and foot tapping, if not just “butt dancing” in your seat, haha.

I don’t really like jazz but swing music is very catchy!

In a searching moment last weekend for something to watch, I came across “The Replacements”, a movie I guess I just like watching because of the songs, this is one that I just really like by Gloria Gaynor and the dancing is silly too….enjoy:

A David Bowie cover if I am not mistaken. I also believe the singer of the Wallfowers is Bob Dillian’s son.

On a much less musical note, I actually had an “ah-ha” moment when I read William Voegeli’s article in “IMPRIMIS” titled “The Case Against Liberal Compassion”. I beg anyone who is as troubled by the failure of the welfare state as I am to look this up on line. Finally, a clear, concise explanation of why the left has been so successful at painting us as cold-hearted, and yet they sit on top of one failure after another. According to he article, we are spending $10K PER AMERICAN on the welfare state, but according to the left they need more, yet nothing has improved because of the spending so far.

Nothing like all the freebies to sit back and demand more! Then, to give people that are working and paying for them to do this, no thanks at all. A bunch of ingrates I say! Unless they really need help and I am fine with that. Will look up the article.

Please do Lou. The article is about the “do-gooders” that are building the welfare state rather than the recipients. It explains a lot.

I will have to look it up as well. $10,000 per American! That number is much higher than I would have expected.

And now we are getting ready to go back into Iraq, none of this is a mistake and I fear everything over there is going to escalate and we will find ourselves in another major war.
