The Washington Post fact checks Saturday Night Live’s “I’m Just a Bill” parody of Barack Obama’s Executive immigration action
Last weekend Saturday Night Live opened up the show with a parody of the old School House Rock’s “I’m Just a Bill” cartoon and it was absolutely hilarious. If you have not seen it I highly recommend that you check it out here.
Apparently not everybody was as enamored by the parody as I was: For example, the Washington Post was so taken aback at the idea the President could be mocked for his actions that they actually ran a fact check on the parody.
Here is what the Washington Post was able to come up with:
This skit got a couple of things right, and a couple of things wrong. For starters, Obama didn’t sign an executive order. He is taking executive action, in particular by directing the Department of Homeland Security to expand programs that defer deportation for classes of undocumented immigrants — parents of U.S. citizens or permanent-resident children, as well as undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.
A marginal, if not totally irrelevant, issue of semantics but even the Washington Post had to admit Saturday Night Live got the gist of it right:
The cold open got the basic explanation of what the difference is between a law and executive order right. And SNL also is correct that more Americans, even if they support comprehensive immigration reform, don’t believe Obama should do it by fiat.
It is no secret among conservatives that most of the mainstream media has a liberal bias but this takes it to a whole new level low. To think a well-respected and legitimate news source such as the Washington Post would think it necessary to come to the defense of Barack Obama over a comedy sketch shows us that they believe the President is beyond reproach. Lighten up WaPo, this is called humor.
This attempted defense of the President, and the mindset behind it, is almost as funny as the sketch itself…
