Rep. Ted Yoho offers to run against John Boehner for Speaker

January 4, 2015

Florida Republican Representative Ted Yoho has become the third conservative member of the House to announce he would vote against John Boehner for Speaker. In addition, he as also volunteered to run against the Speaker if nobody else emerges.

  Here is more:

“I ran for Congress in 2012 because I had had enough,” Yoho said in announcing his public opposition to Boehner. “Enough of career politicians, enough of political gamesmanship, and enough of the lack of leadership in Washington. As we enter 2015, we are faced with overwhelming challenges. However, the dawn of 2015 also promises unlimited potential and the opportunity to begin rebuilding America.”

Yoho also said in his statement that he would be willing to stand up as a potential alternative candidate to Boehner, if members feel they need to vote for someone other than Boehner

Of course this still means that the conservatives need over two dozen more to follow suit and at this late date it is highly unlikely–unless there are many who are planning to vote against the Speaker but are afraid to admit it publicly for fear of retribution.

Louie Gohmert just announced on Fox this morning. Now there is something that would put a spring in our step.

P.S. As I understand it, the Dems can vote for Boehner.

Rep.Gohmert would make an excellent Speaker, I do not know that much about Rep. Yoho, but could he do any worse than Boehner. The main problem I see is if too many people throw their hats in the ring and water down the votes. Not sure how they work this, do they take a vote first of ones opposing and then pick the best of that group to run against Boehner, as they would in a presidential election, or is it everyone thrown in together? Guess I have not seen any opposition for that position before or have not paid attention, could have been either.

From what I have read nobody has to officially run against Boehner, but if he does not gain a majority of the votes they go to a second ballot and so on. I would imagine that as the ballots progress there would be one candidate who emerged as a possible replacement. I am not sure but I think the Democrats vote on this as well.

There is the problem, Steve, the Democrats will shore up the vote for Boehner.

So it is a majority of the total number of House votes including the Dems and GOP? That is what it seems. Or the majority of the GOP with Dems voting?

Bunker, from what it sounds like if all the Republicans vote (doesn’t matter who for) and do not vote “present”, there is no way that Pelosi can take the position. I am still unclear about IF the Democrats can vote and prop up the Boehner vote. That just doesn’t seem right, does it? It seems like it should only be the Republicans voting.
Hopefully someone on the blog knows that answer, maybe they are still sleeping????

That is the way I understand it in regards to Pelosi as well Lou. The establishment Republicans are trying to scare people into supporting Boehner with the claim Pelosi could win if we don’t support Boehner.

I wish Trey Gowdy would step up to the plate. He might be able to stir up some significant support.

I really like him as well, Jim, but was hoping he would have a higher position offered to him come our next presidential election. I would love to see him as AG. He is a pretty smart guy, he needs to be in a high position. The problem I see is that we are running out of time and by that next vote, IF there is a next presidential election it might be too late. So, yes maybe he should also toss his hat into the ring. I do not see him mincing words, but I also do not see much progress in any of the hearings. It seems that the Democrats just are biding their time until the Republicans get tired of having hearings.

I read a few different ways, Bunker, so not sure if even THEY know what they are doing. If Boehner does not get the majority, one said he was out of the running, but not sure how that could be, if they take a second vote, etc. so guess it is in their hands. I at least contacted my Representative by phone and email, so guess I did what I could do except to encourage others to call… I will post the link again:

“To be elected as Speaker, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of all votes cast for individuals, i.e. excluding those who abstain. If no candidate wins such a majority, then the roll call is repeated until a Speaker is elected. The last time repeated votes were required was in 1923, when the Speaker was elected on the ninth ballot.[3]”

What I want from a Speaker isn’t necessarily what will will us the election in 16. We need someone who can be on the news every night like O-blame-a, charismatic, easy on the eyes (sorry Trey, that hair is a nonstarter) looking caring and confident, and at the same time tearing them up behind behind closed doors and raising a ton of money.

Rep. Gowdy does clean up nicely! The point is, we have a “yes man” in Boehner and it is for the wrong party. He needs to go, no matter how it is done. I can think of many others that will follow the Constitution, but he is NOT one of them, pretty sad, since he has made millions off of stupid people that keep re-electing him. I imagine you know what I think of stupid people! Our Representatives and Senators, along with the Supremes, are supposed to be following the Constitution and what it stands for, I wonder what the percentage is that actually DO THAT? We know that Obama has long ago trashed the Constitution and Congress let him do it. It seems to me that they are more interested in what we can do for them and what we can give them, than the reason they were elected. Sickening!

Exactly Bruce, we need a person who can get on TV and articulate the opposing position better than anyone we currently have.

    CALL<CALL<CALL
This might be more important than the Presidential election, if we even have one in our future. Without a good Conservative Speaker in place, the president will walk all over the House. The Senate will follow in their footsteps! We will be finished!
