In 2007 Brian Williams mocked bloggers for not being credible

  Back in 2007 now-disgraced “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams gave a lecture in which he talked about the years he spent building credibility while taking the opportunity to mock bloggers for not being credible themselves.

In a 2007 lecture at New York University’s journalism school, NBC News host Brian Williams touted his “BS meter” when it came to credible news and mocked the credibility of bloggers, pitting himself—a man “developing credentials to cover my field of work”—against lowly bloggers who can’t always be trusted.

“Picture a focus group of people, living or dead, who you have loved in your life, and talk to them,” Williams told the journalism students. “And if you can do that, you’ll find you’re being yourself. People have a great BS meter; it’s built in. They’ll know when they’re being taken for a ride.”

Saying he had developed a “strong BS meter” himself, Williams went on to complain about the problem of unqualified bloggers, who, unlike himself, have not spent their lives “developing credentials”:

“You’re going to be up against people who have an opinion, a modem, and a bathrobe,” Williams told the audience. “All of my life, developing credentials to cover my field of work, and now I’m up against a guy named Vinny in an efficiency apartment in the Bronx who hasn’t left the efficiency apartment in two years… On the Internet, no one knows if you’ve been to Ramadi or you’ve just been to Brooklyn and have an opinion about Ramadi.”

  It is not getting any better for Brian Williams today as now his new account of the now infamous helicopter ride is being called into question and  it is also now being reported that NBC executives asked him to stop telling this tale years ago.

  With his credibility shot it might be time for Brian Williams to go to his apartment, put on his bathrobe, turn on his modem, and join the rest of us with no credibility…
