Open thread for Sunday, February 8th: Looks that Kill

February 8, 2015

open-thread Here is the open thread for Sunday, February 8th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week was a slow one with only 8 posts but did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!?

I thought I would stick with the ’80s metal band theme from last week with the musical selection this week. Here is Motley Crue performing “Looks that Kill” live in 1983.

Thanks for sharing that, lots of info there. There is no doubt that 9/11 has at least been used as an excuse to infringe on the privacy rights of Americans but the idea this was used as a reason to funnel money out of SS and Medicare to make it insolvent in order to give the Republicans an excuse to look at cutting it was something that I had never even thought of before.

You said 80’s and “Looks that kill” Well here is “If looks could kell, they probably would” One of the greatest, and strangest videos IMHO. Something about it seems right for these days of Obama, a cult worship/adulation deal where he rides around making proclamations. http://youtu.be/zP1_pZkJTvk

A bit distracting, but guess it was to make a point!

I didn’t think of it that way Bruce but the ’80s did have a look to kill looking back on it now. I have always loved the song you posted but had never seen that video, thanks for sharing. The reason Peter Gabriel left Genesis was because he preferred theatrical performances and the rest of the band wanted to be straightforward.

Listening to some of the 80’s songs takes me back (I sound so OLD, don’t I?) to a time when things were not so CRAZY! Sometimes I have to wonder will I ever be that person that thought things would always work out for the good, again? It just seems to get worse and worse now.

But of course, the rainbow flag will become the national flag. We have to be politically, racially and gender correct, you know?

So Lou, we are always told how out of step we are, and O-blame-a called us the flat earthers. So, as one commentator I listen to asked “Who changed?”.So imagine a Presidential election in the 60’s or even 70’s. Back then, a Republican could have said the same things they say today. But a Democrat? Back THEN, they could have opened with a prayer, talked about God, talked about the strength of a traditional family, a limited role for the Federal Government in education, strong foreign policy, a strong military, developing energy and national resources, American exceptionalism, Soviet opposition, enforced immigration laws, support for Israel, and opposition to gay marriage, (like Obama in 2011)
It is so clear there are no traditional Democrats any more. There are only Leftists, squishy Republicans, and Traditionalists.
It doesn’t seem like things are going to work out for the good again, but remember, after years and years of regressive socialism in England, they woke up and elected Margaret Thatcher.

It seems like times were simpler back then but I wonder if it was just my youth and now that I am older I just see things differently?

Steve, I always told my Mother that he had it much harder but much simpler. All her father had to do was plow, plant, and harvest. Back braking and risky, but simple. As Lou and I know, owning and renting out housing is magnitudes more complex. In my Mothers day, the rental agreement was 1 page, now over 30. You used to be able to go to your bank, and talk to someone you knew and get a loan. No more. As a general contractor, you went to the counter and got a permit that day. It is so onerous and time consuming and expensive, I don’t build anymore. No Steve, that wasn’t your imagination, that was fact.

Things were simpler then! A hand shake meant something, as well. Now it is all paper trails and you better hope you do not get sued for something and if you do that you have an umbrella policy and an LLC to help protect what you have.It can be gone in an instant. It doesn’t pay anymore to be honest, it seems. There are always people out there that want to take what you have! The middle class doesn’t have a chance now!

I REMEMBER GROWING UP, WHEN MY LATE PARENTS WOULD PUT LAWRENCE WELK ON THE TELEVISION, AND BOTH OF THEM WOULD DANCE TOGETHER. I REMEMBER WHEN MY MOTHER AND I WOULD GET SOME ENJOYMENT OUT OF LOOKING AT THE SEARS ROEBUCK CATALOG, THAT WE USE TO CALL THE WISH BOOK. I REMEMBER THE DAYS, WHEN WE COULD LINE DRY OUR CLOTHES IN THE YARD, AND HAVE A CLOTHES LINE, BOY! DID THOSE CLOTHES REALLY SMELL CLEAN, WE HAD ONE OF THOSE KENMORE WASHING MACHINES, WITH THE ROLLER PINS, AND DID THEY EVER CLEAN CLOTHES AND YOU COULD ADJUST THE TIME ON THEM, AND MOST APPLIANCES DID LAST FOR A VERY LONG TIME. NOW WE HAVE JUST ABOUT EVERYONE DEPENDENT ON A PROGRAM OR SOMEBODY, EXCEPT FOR THEMSELVES. AS A LADY, I REMEMBER WHEN TAKING A LOOK AT REDBOOK OR COSMOPOLITAN WAS NOT A PROBLEM, NOW I HAVE TOO KEEP UP WITH GOVERNMENTS, POLITICIANS, AND SATANISTS, AMONG MANY OTHERS THAT ARE TOO NUMEROUS TO MENTION. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PERFUMES GROWING UP WAS CALLED EVENING IN PARIS.

All gone, futuret, all gone! I remember the same, good times, good family values, extended families, a thing of the past. We now have a world that our Great-grandparents would not recognize, maybe even our Grandparents would not. My Grand-dad lived in a wonderful time where there was honor, he was a gentleman, tipped his hat to the ladies, wore a suit and saw many, many new innovations….now look what we have?

I KNOW ALL GONE. EACH DAY WHEN A PUT MY FEET ON THE FLOOR AND WAKE UP, I PREPARE FOR MY DEATH AND THE AFTER LIFE, AS A MESSIANIC CHRISTIAN, I CAN NOT AND WILL NOT ACCEPT THE MARK OF THE BEAST. I KNOW THAT WITH EACH PASSING MOMENT, HAVING THE ANTI-CHRIST(OBAMA) ON THIS PLANET, MY TIME DRAWS CLOSER FOR RESISTANCE. THERE SHALL COME A TIME I KNOW, THAT I MUST DIE FOR CHRIST. THEN AGAIN IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD, THERE SHALL NEVER ETERNALLY BE ANY DEATH, EVIL, NOR SIN AND THAT IS SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO. I WONDER THROUGHOUT THE DAY MANY TIMES, WHEN JESUS CHRIST RETURN, WHAT THINGS HE MAY ASSIGN ME TO DO???

I am inclined to believe you guys, it really was a simpler time back then. While it might have been physically tougher to earn a living and while our standard of living might be higher it seems to have come with a price.

On a side note, Illinois has a bill up, well, I will let you read it for yourself, down at the bottom of my post! It has to be a good thing, in my book. We have had Gov Quinn too long, Gov Rauner has to be for the good! We asked him about all the welfare fraud at a talk he gave at the Decatur Club, he said it was on the agenda, but first things first on what he was dealing with….hopefully he can start turning this state around!

The MSM is using this “outbreak” of previously eradicated diseases to attack people who chose not to vaccinate their children but they are ignoring the fact that our border policies and the influx of illegal immigrants is what is behind this. And they are doing it for a reason…

Anyone before 1957 I believe did not have the MMR shot….we got the measles and now they are saying we could get them again, SO, we should get another shot….NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! I also had a mump, my brother said, not mumps, haha! I am tired of the government telling me and mine what we HAVE to do. They are working on the supplements that will in the future have to be prescription and of course we have the Internet (will have to pass it to see what is in it), where have we found out, TOO LATE, about something in the past????? Oh ya, the ACA! That worked out so well for all of us, didn’t it? The illegals are bringing in the diseases that have been gone, and WE will all have to pay dearly for it!

Steve made a point on another site that was so damn on point, it should be shouted out to everyone, every day. IF THE SCIENCE IS CLEAR AND SETTLED ON SOMETHING AS COMPLEX AS CLIMATE CHANGE, WHY THE HELL CAN’T WE FIGURE OUT IMMUNIZATIONS? I didn’t have the energy to see the replies, but I am willing to bet they are as lame as Brian Williams excuses.

If memory serves, and it often doesn’t, you posted it to the (not so) Polite Debate Society. You took great pains to present it in a ‘polite’ form.

Yeah, that was not me. There are so few conservatives over there that I can see where the mistake would come from. I thought about replying to one of the immunization posts by commenting about the role our open borders is playing the the reemergence of diseases but decided not to.
I did make a post calling out the liberals who are pro-science when it comes to climate change but are anti-science when it comes to GMOs and it led to a heated debate and it turns out that the reason most of them are anti-GMO is because GMOs benefit corporations. Bill is the only liberal there who is consistent on both issues. It seems the rest of them only believe in science when it hurts corporate America and I find that quite telling.
With the addition of new members who apparently do not understand what the group is supposed to be about it has become less based on debate and has become more of a “gotcha” group. I have no problem with “gotcha” but that is not what the group is supposed to be about and I refrain from that type of comment there. I have called out people who engage in it there but they just do not seem to get what I am trying to put across.

That was it, GMO’s. So I guess I’ll take credit for that little bit of immunization profundity, but I will give you credit for the inspiration. Pick and choose the science to fit the agenda..
