Democrats slam House Republicans for changing subpoena rules
Somehow I missed this story but apparently in January House Republicans changed the subpoena rules to grant the Judiciary Committee and the Financial Services Committee new subpoena powers. These new rules allow the majority party to subpoena witnesses without consulting the minority party beforehand.
Needless to say this has been met with condemnation from the Democratic Party.
Here is more:
Democratic lawmakers are harshly criticizing House Republicans for altering committee rules governing how chairmen can subpoena witnesses and documents.
In a letter shared with POLITICO, the Democrats slams the GOP conference for changing rules on a number of House committees to make it easier for Republicans to subpoena witnesses without consultation or approval from minority lawmakers – an effort that came as Republicans are preparing aggressive oversight efforts for President Barack Obama’s final two years in office.
Sixteen Democrats, all ranking members of House committees, accused Republicans of attempting to create Darrell Issa-like committee structures, referring to the former Oversight and Government Reform chairman who was criticized by Democrats for his dogged probes into the White House.
“For decades, responsible committee chairmen—both Democratic and Republican—recognized that the coercive power of subpoenas should be used only as a last resort, and they obtained the concurrence of the ranking member or called a committee vote before issuing subpoenas,” the lawmakers wrote on Tuesday.
I will give these Democrats the benefit of the doubt and concede they might have a legitimate point, however it is quite hard to take them seriously on this issue after Harry Reid invoked the nuclear option to change the rule on filibustering some Presidential Judicial nominations. Suddenly now the Democrats are worried about long-standing rules?
In defending his decision to invoke the nuclear option Harry Reid basically said the Republicans should be thankful for the rule change because when and if they ever win the Presidency it would also make it easier for them to get Presidential Judicial nominees confirmed.
Could not the same be said here? The hypocrisy is abounding…
Oh no! Tell me it isn’t so! The Democrats are unhappy with the Republicans?

For some reason this was caught in my spam folder, I think it is because you only gave a link with no additional comment. It certainly looks as though between the FCC and the FEC the full court press in on to grab control of the internet!

In the end they are on the same side; they are the ruling class and we are the ruled.

I’m actually passed the point of caring about anyone’s current hypocrisy. We have a lawless President, lawless Attorney General and a basically lawless party, the Democrats. Within pretty broad limits, I’ll sign off on anything that shuts down Obama and his minions.
The situation is bad enough that we’re better off dealing with the consequences of this action down the road than permitting still more destruction of our law.

Very good point Dr. Jeff. This post is not one of the most important issues but I still like to call them out on something so blatant as this. These new rule changes should help the Republicans get to the bottom of some of these scandals but as we saw with Fast and Furious Obama still has the Executive Privilege card in his hand.

Add this one to the mix – In New York, there’s talk of raising resisting arrest to a felony. Got it? If a cop is making an illegal arrest or even just throwing his weight around, resisting him becomes a felony.
