Open thread for Sunday, May 24th: ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’

May 24, 2015

open-threadHere is the open thread for Sunday, May 24th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week we covered 8 stories, did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!

Now onto my number four all time favorite band and I am going to cheat this week with two selections. Hey, its my list so its my rules, right? 🙂 Coming in at numbers 4A and 4B, are The Smiths and the Talking Heads.

First up is 4A and that distinction belongs to The Smiths. The first video I have decided to share is the song that turned me on to the band and that song is “Bigmouth Strikes Again.”

Next up is “This Charming Man.”

Lastly is “Miserable Lie.”

And now onto 4B, the Talking Heads. Up first is “Life During Wartime” followed by “Girlfriend is Better” and finally “Cities.” All of these versions are from the concert video Stop Making Sense.

I just got back from bringing my 2 grandbabies home with me from Arkansas, so this will be short. Anyone that has little ones running around knows that you have very little “extra” time.
My #2 pic has to be the Eagles. There are 2 groups I still want to see before I die, this is one of them. They have been around since 1971 and have BIG talent between the 4 of them: Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Enjoy!
The first top song would have to be Hotel California:

This is a slow song of theirs that back in the 70’s was VERY popular with the females, I still love hearing it:

Another favorite is New Kid In Town:

Actually there is nothing I do NOT like, so I could keep posting one after another, but I will leave you at 3 to enjoy! I have little boys to get breakfast for!!!

Thanks for sharing Lou, next week is the big one and I have no idea where you are going with this! The Eagles were very diverse with some people even considering them to be more country than rock, but I never bought into that. They are a very talented rock band and that is evidenced by the success the individual members also had on their own.

Thanks for sharing. I had a couple of Beck’s CDs but I really have not listened to them in a long time. He still gets a pretty good amount of airplay here.

Lead singer Morrissey is the king of mope. He struck out on his own after The Smiths broke up and did some stuff I enjoy but eventually he became a caricature of himself.

I don’t know if you have heard of the band Modest Mouse but if you have this is Smith’s guitarist Johnny Marr’s project.

We are taking the kids to the Monticello, Il. Rail Museum today. They have the Diesels out there this weekend for hour rides. Sometimes they have the Steams. Steams are my personal favorite. Everytime there is one (fewer all the time) passing thru and heading to their final resting place, hopefully it is under their own power and we try and see them. From early on ( I must have been 4 or 5) my uncle took us to see the trains down in East St. Louis and St. Louis. I have loved trains since then. The BIG train station in St. Louis, is no longer that, it has many stores in it, and a hotel, but back in “the day”, like most train stations, there was STEAM everywhere. So many trains and so much to see, I miss those times, they were good times and they were simpler times. There is a BIG train museum south of St. Louis that I have been to almost as much as the Art Museum down there. To me, the trains are alive and always will be. The Steams, especially. There is once particular Diesel that has the one big headlight that I like, but they never took the place of the Steams for me. At one time, years ago, you were allowed to get up into the engines, but now, since many people cannot respect them and not steal parts off of them, they cannot do that anymore. Anyway, that is where we are headed.

Steve I bet if you wore the ‘light blue suit’ to work and did some ‘Talking heads’ moves you’d get more recognition … for good taste and style! Some fun ones tunes!
    Some mellow ones:

Zip we are showing our age when we KNOW those songs, I guess. That Steve had “heard” of it means he is still young, although he might say he is not any more, ha!

I was thinking that too Lou! But, even the Big Band era I like too. While Steve is dancing the Talking Head dance, we’re doing the mellow-yellow!

Zip, music was big in my house growing up. Alot of musical instruments, too. I had the Big Band sound playing or if my Mom was ironing it was Country. We tried to avoid her if she was ironing, if you ran past, she grabbed you and started dancing to the music. We stayed outside ALOT! If you were like me, I knew the words to most the songs. Nothing wrong with it, I have many many albums from my parents as well as my own. I have a few less of mine, since my son “borrowed” them. The 40’s sound was probably some of my favorite songs.

Lou, not so young anymore. Scheduled to turn the Big 5-0 next year!
Zip, I never did master any of those moves however I have been known to hit the dance floor after a few drinks if The Humpty Dance comes on. (My wife always requests it at weddings because she knows I cannot resist)

Is the Humpty Dance anything like the Hokey Pokey? How about the Chicken Dance? Are you up for that one? When we got married, I had the wedding dress that you had to pull the train up and button it at the back waist so it did not drag. My best friends Dad decided I needed to polka with him and with 4 inch spike platforms he proceeded to swing me around like a rag doll until my heel caught in the hem. I am a bit more “reserved” on the dance floor now, IF I can help it.

As for turning 50, I was NOT looking forward to that, but my husband had a surprise party for me, I did not want to go in when I figured out what was happening, but after seeing alot of friends and family, I just decided 50 was ok. The next day, I was back to normal. Now at 61, for some reason 60 was not bad…70???? Who knows what will happen by then.

Sounds like a good time was had by all at your wedding! The Humpty Dance is not quite the same as the Chicken Dance; it is actually a rap song which was released in the early ’90’s and I have always liked it.
It has a couple of sexually explicit lyrics which they beeped out on MTV back then, nowadays I think MTV would probably play it unedited if they still played music. Here is is (unedited)

I have slept since you did that thread, apparently. I would say I am on information overload now. Maybe “subliminally” you put that thought into my head???? Hmmm!

We went to the Memorial Day prayer/honor guard Remembrance ceremony at 10 am this morning. We had the little ones with us, they were good. It seems there are less and less people going to these. The service members are getting old that put these on. It was a cool morning for the ceremony. It puts it into perspective that this is not a “happy” day of anything, but honoring those that were lost and those that were lucky enough to come back.
